Qualidade de Vida e Atitudes dos Idosos Face à Velhice
A problemática do envelhecimento tem assumido, nos últimos anos, uma
crescente importância na consciência coletiva da população, tornando-se cada vez mais importante compreender a população idosa e a sua realidade.
Posto isto, foi realizado um estudo quantitativo e correlacional, que teve como
objectivo avaliar a qualidade de vida e atitudes face à velhice de idosos, bem como a
relação entre estas e as variáveis sociodemográficas e familiares.
Foram inquiridos 100 idosos, com mais de 65 anos e sem deficit cognitivo . Para
a recolha de dados utilizou-se uma entrevista estruturada, constituída dados
sóciodemográficos do idoso, WHOQOL-AGE (Caballero, Miret, Power, Chatterji,
Tobiasz-Adamczyk, Koskinen, Leonardi, Olaya, Haro &Ayuso-Mateos, 2013) e o AAQ
( Laidlaw, Power, Schmidt and the WHOQOL-OLD Group, 2007).
Dos resultados destacamos os seguintes: A amostra é constituída por 52% de
idosos do sexo masculino tendo uma média de idades de 74,7 (DP=6,8). È no fator
Perdas Psicossociais e no Desenvolvimento Psicológico que os idosos têm uma melhor
atitude face ao envelhecimento. É no item “Tem dinheiro suficiente para satisfazer as
suas necessidades?” que os idosos apresentam uma menor qualidade de vida.
Não ter doença diagnosticada e ser do sexo masculino permitem ter melhores
atitudes face ao envelhecimento.
A Qualidade de Vida está relacionada com a idade, com o estado de saúde e com
a intensidade de preocupação da família. Constatou-se que os idosos que não estão
institucionalizados apresentam uma melhor qualidade de vida e uma melhor atitude face à velhice. Quem não precisa de ajudas técnicas para se movimentar apresenta uma melhor qualidade de vida.
Diferenças nas atitudes face ao envelhecimento consoante a residência onde
habita são significativas nas mudanças físicas e no desenvolvimento psicológico sendo
que os idosos que não vivem em lares têm uma atitude mais positiva em ambos os
fatores. / Over the past few years the issue of aging has played a growing importance in the population`s collective consciousness becoming increasingly important to
understand the elderly population and this reality.
Therefore a quantitative correlational study was performed to assess the quality
of life of seniors and their attitudes towards old age, and the relationship between these
and the socio-demographic and family factors.
100 seniors with more than 65 years and without cognitive deficit were
surveyed. For data collection we used a structured interview consisting of sociodemographic data of the elderly, WHOQOL-AGE (Caballero Miret Power Chatterji
Tobiasz-Adamczyk Koskinen Leonardi Olaya Ayuso-Mateos & Haro 2013) and AAQ
(Laidlaw Power Schmidt and the WHOQOL-OLD Group 2007).
We highlight: The sample is composed of 52% of males with a mean age of 74.7
(SD = 6.8). It is in the factor Psychosocial Losses and Psychological Development that
elderly people have a better attitude towards aging. It is in the item "Do you have
enough money to meet your needs?" that seniors show less quality of life.
Not having illness and being male allows having better attitudes towards aging.
Quality of Life is related to age, health condition and the intensity of family
concerns. It was observed that the elderly who are not institutionalized have a better
quality of life and a better attitude towards old age. Who does not need assistive devices to move around has a better quality of life.
Differences in attitudes towards aging, according to residency, are significant in
physical changes and psychological development, thus verifying that elderly who do not
live in nursing homes have a more positive attitude in both factors
Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s
using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays
in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at
production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment
at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity.
We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the
B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2,
-1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in
agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model
value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by

High-sensitivity microwave vector detection at extremely low-power levels for low-dimensional electron systems
We present a high-sensitivity microwave vector detection system for studying the low-dimensional electron system embedded in the gaps of a coplanar waveguide at low temperatures. Using this system, we have achieved 0.005% and 0.001degrees resolutions in amplitude and phase variations, respectively, at 10 GHz in a magnetotransport measurement on a quantum-wire array with an average signal power less than -75 dBm into the sample at 0.3 K. From the measured phase variation, we can distinguish a very tiny change in the induced dipole moment of each quantum wire. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics
Influence of chemical compositions and molecular weights of humic acids on Cr(VI) photo-reduction
Humic acids (HA) strongly affect the fate of trace metals in soils and aquatic environments. One of the remarkable properties of HA is its ability to reduce Cr(VI), an extremely toxic anion. However, it is unclear which HA components are involved in Cr(VI) reduction and possess the photo-induced properties. In this study, an ultrafiltration technique was used to fractionate HAs into four fractions of different nominal molecular weights (Mw): >100, 50–100, 10–50 and <10 kDa. Each HA fraction was characterized by spectroscopic analyses followed by examining Cr(VI) removal on each fraction of HA at pH 1–5. Spectroscopic results indicated that low-Mw HA was enriched with polar and aromatic domains. These polar, including polar C in aliphatic region, and aromatic groups were the major sites for Cr(VI) reduction because they disappeared rapidly upon interaction with Cr(VI). As a result, low Mw of HA exhibited greater efficiency of Cr(VI) reduction. Light induced the rapid transfer of electrons between chromate-phenol/carboxyl ester, or the formation of peroxide radicals or H2O2 through the ready decay of peroxy radicals associated with polar substituents, explained the rapid scavenging of Cr(VI) on polar and aromatic groups of HAs under illumination
Microbiological food safety in Malaysia from the academician’s perspective
Food safety in Malaysia is not considered an issue yet. From the previous year (2005-
2015) records, the incidence rate of food poisoning had been fluctuating and despite that,
cases continue to occur especially among school students. As a developing nation, it is
high-time that Malaysia begins to emphasize on food safety to reduce the burden of
foodborne illness in the socio-economic development of the country, and at the same time,
gain benefits in terms of economic returns and trade through food safety enforcement.
Most importantly, public health is achieved through food safety implementation and
accentuation. The current standing point of the Malaysia’s food safety is discussed in this
review. In addition, the review will also discuss the role of academicians as intervention
contributions in tackling food safety issues. The review is hoped to provide valuable and
concentrated information and knowledge to readers in the light to drive Malaysia into
ensuring safer food for the public
Application of a Liquid Biphasic Flotation (LBF) System for Protein Extraction from Persiscaria Tenulla Leaf
Persiscaria tenulla, commonly known as Polygonum, is a plant belonging to the family Polygonaceae, which originated from and is widely found in Southeast Asia countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The leaf of the plant is believed to have active ingredients that are responsible for therapeutic effects. In order to take full advantage of a natural medicinal plant for the application in the pharmaceutical and food industries, extraction and separation techniques are essential. In this study, an emerging and rapid extraction approach known as liquid biphasic flotation (LBF) is proposed for the extraction of protein from Persiscaria tenulla leaves. The scope of this study is to establish an efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective technology for the extraction of protein from therapeutic leaves. Based on the ideal conditions of the small LBF system, a 98.36% protein recovery yield and a 79.12% separation efficiency were achieved. The upscaling study of this system exhibited the reliability of this technology for large-scale applications with a protein recovery yield of 99.44% and a separation efficiency of 93.28%. This technology demonstrated a simple approach with an effective protein recovery yield and separation that can be applied for the extraction of bioactive compounds from various medicinal-value plants
