Empirical analysis of the worldwide maritime transportation network
In this paper we present an empirical study of the worldwide maritime
transportation network (WMN) in which the nodes are ports and links are
container liners connecting the ports. Using the different representation of
network topology namely the space and , we study the statistical
properties of WMN including degree distribution, degree correlations, weight
distribution, strength distribution, average shortest path length, line length
distribution and centrality measures. We find that WMN is a small-world network
with power law behavior. Important nodes are identified based on different
centrality measures. Through analyzing weighted cluster coefficient and
weighted average nearest neighbors degree, we reveal the hierarchy structure
and "rich-club" phenomenon in the network.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure
Gym-ANM: Reinforcement Learning Environments for Active Network Management Tasks in Electricity Distribution Systems
Active network management (ANM) of electricity distribution networks include
many complex stochastic sequential optimization problems. These problems need
to be solved for integrating renewable energies and distributed storage into
future electrical grids. In this work, we introduce Gym-ANM, a framework for
designing reinforcement learning (RL) environments that model ANM tasks in
electricity distribution networks. These environments provide new playgrounds
for RL research in the management of electricity networks that do not require
an extensive knowledge of the underlying dynamics of such systems. Along with
this work, we are releasing an implementation of an introductory
toy-environment, ANM6-Easy, designed to emphasize common challenges in ANM. We
also show that state-of-the-art RL algorithms can already achieve good
performance on ANM6-Easy when compared against a model predictive control (MPC)
approach. Finally, we provide guidelines to create new Gym-ANM environments
differing in terms of (a) the distribution network topology and parameters, (b)
the observation space, (c) the modelling of the stochastic processes present in
the system, and (d) a set of hyperparameters influencing the reward signal.

Extraction and Characterization of Microplastics from Organic Solid Matrices and their Remediation
Plastics have become an essential commodity due to their superior engineering properties, durability and low cost to be used by a wide range of commercial products. However, the degradation of plastics due to mechanical, chemical, biological, and photolytic stresses has led to the formation of microplastics (MPs). MPs have risen to the top of environmental concerns due to their affinity to pollute the environment, and to pass to the food chain, threatening human health. In this context, attempts have been made to extract and characterize MPs from aqueous and solid matrices. A problem that not only hampers research but also regulatory decisions is the variety of methods used for the extraction and characterization of MPs, especially in organic solid matrices (OSMs) with organic (OM) \u3e 5%, making the comparison of results difficult. This paper aims to address this need, by critically assessing the methodologies and protocols used for extraction of MPs from OSMs, which includes sample collection, dispersion, OM removal, and separation, as well as the qualitative and quantitative characterization of MPs. Further, current impediments in the accurate characterization of MPs are identified along with recommendations for future developments. Finally, recent efforts by various countries to legislate against certain sources of MPs, as well as issues and novel techniques to remediate MPs from the soil, and wastewater have been highlighted
Evolutionary process of Bos taurus cattle in favourable versus unfavourable environments and its implications for genetic selection
The evolutionary processes that have enabled Bos taurus cattle to establish around the globe are at the core to the future success of livestock production. Our study focuses on the history of cattle domestication including the last 60 years of B. taurus breeding programmes in both favourable and unfavourable environments and its consequences on evolution and fitness of cattle. We discuss the emergence of ‘production diseases’ in temperate production systems and consider the evolutionary genetics of tropical adaptation in cattle and conclude that the Senepol, N'Dama, Adaptaur and Criollo breeds, among others with similar evolutionary trajectories, would possess genes capable of improving the productivity of cattle in challenging environments. Using our own experimental evidence from northern Australia, we review the evolution of the Adaptaur cattle breed which has become resistant to cattle tick. We emphasize that the knowledge of interactions between genotype, environment and management in the livestock systems will be required to generate genotypes for efficient livestock production that are both economically and environmentally sustainable. Livestock producers in the 21st century will have less reliance on infrastructure and veterinary products to alleviate environmental stress and more on the animal's ability to achieve fitness in a given production environment
Metagenomes of the Picoalga Bathycoccus from the Chile Coastal Upwelling
Among small photosynthetic eukaryotes that play a key role in oceanic food webs, picoplanktonic Mamiellophyceae such as Bathycoccus, Micromonas, and Ostreococcus are particularly important in coastal regions. By using a combination of cell sorting by flow cytometry, whole genome amplification (WGA), and 454 pyrosequencing, we obtained metagenomic data for two natural picophytoplankton populations from the coastal upwelling waters off central Chile. About 60% of the reads of each sample could be mapped to the genome of Bathycoccus strain from the Mediterranean Sea (RCC1105), representing a total of 9 Mbp (sample T142) and 13 Mbp (sample T149) of non-redundant Bathycoccus genome sequences. WGA did not amplify all regions uniformly, resulting in unequal coverage along a given chromosome and between chromosomes. The identity at the DNA level between the metagenomes and the cultured genome was very high (96.3% identical bases for the three larger chromosomes over a 360 kbp alignment). At least two to three different genotypes seemed to be present in each natural sample based on read mapping to Bathycoccus RCC1105 genome
Phosphorylation of iRhom2 Controls Stimulated Proteolytic Shedding by the Metalloprotease ADAM17/TACE
This deposit is composed by the main article plus the supplementary materials of the publication.Cell surface metalloproteases coordinate signaling during development, tissue homeostasis, and disease. TACE (TNF-α-converting enzyme), is responsible for cleavage ("shedding") of membrane-tethered signaling molecules, including the cytokine TNF, and activating ligands of the EGFR. The trafficking of TACE within the secretory pathway requires its binding to iRhom2, which mediates the exit of TACE from the endoplasmic reticulum. An important, but mechanistically unclear, feature of TACE biology is its ability to be stimulated rapidly on the cell surface by numerous inflammatory and growth-promoting agents. Here, we report a role for iRhom2 in TACE stimulation on the cell surface. TACE shedding stimuli trigger MAP kinase-dependent phosphorylation of iRhom2 N-terminal cytoplasmic tail. This recruits 14-3-3 proteins, enforcing the dissociation of TACE from complexes with iRhom2, promoting the cleavage of TACE substrates.
