    Classification of elliptic and K3 fibrations birational to some Q-Fano 3-folds

    A complete classification is presented of elliptic and K3 fibrations birational to certain mildly singular complex Fano 3-folds. Detailed proofs are given for one example case, namely that of a general hypersurface X of degree 30 in weighted P^4 with weights 1,4,5,6,15; but our methods apply more generally. For constructing birational maps from X to elliptic and K3 fibrations we use Kawamata blowups and Mori theory to compute anticanonical rings; to exclude other possible fibrations we make a close examination of the strictly canonical singularities of (X,(1/n)H), where H is the linear system associated to the putative birational map and n is its anticanonical degree.Comment: 24 page

    UK Gypsies and Travellers and the third sector

    This paper explores the development of the UK Gypsy and Traveller third sector and details factors which have impeded development. This includes a lack of resources and skills but also illustrates how in recent years important progress has been made in community development. The paper concludes that the current cutbacks and reduction in resources for community development, combined with new policies that Gypsies and Travellers perceive as being hostile towards them, could undermine progress made. The paper argues that ’positive action’ combined with greater community involvement in service delivery could strengthen the Gypsy and Traveller third sector and foster intercultural dialogue and promote inclusion. Processes evident in other branches of the third sector (McCabe et al., 2010). The paper is relevant to a number of TSRC work streams, particularly ’Below the Radar’ which explores the role, function, impact and experiences of small community action groups or organisations

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is identified much later and less often in females than in males. Some researchers suspect that a different set of characteristics of ASD in females may not be consistent with the more established and widely recognized characteristics of ASD, leading to under-identification in women. In the present study, four women and one non-binary feminine-presenting person with ASD were interviewed. The five participants conveyed their experiences with social-pragmatic communication, and their views on gender, ASD, and gender differences in ASD. The results are discussed in relationship to the limited amount of past research on women with ASD

    Relational database management systems (RDBMS) have become widely used by many industries in recent years. Latterly these systems have begun to expand their market by becoming readily available at minimal cost to most users of modern computing technology. The quality of applications developed from RDBMSs however is largely dependent upon the quality of the underlying schema. This research looks at the area of schema design and in particular schemata designed by people who have a minimal understanding of relational concepts. It uses a survey and case studies to help define some of the issues involved in the area. A procedure to modify existing schemata is described, and the schema from one of the case studies used to apply the schema re-design procedure to a real database design. The results are compared to the original schema as well as a schema designed using a conventional application of the NIAM analysis and design methodology. The research supports the hypothesis that database applications based on schemata designed by lay-persons are currently being used to support business data management requirements. The utility, reliability and longevity of these applications depend to some extent on the quality of the underlying schema and its ability to store the required data and maintain that data's integrity. The application of the schema re-design procedure presented in this thesis reveals refinements on the original schema and provides a method for lay-persons to evaluate and improve existing database designs. A number of issues and questions related to the focus of this research are raised and, although outside the scope of the research, are noted as suggestions for further work

    The shift from paper based communication to exchange of electronic copies of documents and drawings has made project participants overloaded with information. Electronically exchanged information could be better supported through BIM and automation of routing information using workflow management technologies to improve information availability for decision making. However, it has been observed that BIM is currently being utilized as a number of disconnected models. The built-in intelligence in BIM allows automated updating and extraction of 2D drawings, documentation and other building information. Extracted documents create extra work to be communicated to project teams. Therefore more tasks and communications are created. Accordingly, this study identifies the impacts of BIM in project team communication. It also critically evaluates electronic communication patterns and people’s activities by data profiling to identify variables and project characteristics that have an impact on electronic communication level

    Impact melt breccias at the Apollo 17 landing site

    Impact melt breccias are by far the most common highland rock type collected on the Apollo 17 mission. They tend to be fine grained, with virtually no clast-free impact melt rocks having been identified. All the highland boulders sampled are impact melt breccia, with the possible exception of one South Massif boulder that might have a friable matrix (but nonetheless consists dominantly of impact melt) and a shocked igneous norite boulder from the North Massif. The impact melt breccias were originally described as metaclastic, but their melt origin became apparent as work progressed. Chemical compositions appear to allow natural groupings of the impact melt breccias. Various groupings of the impact melt breccias are discussed
