Toward a social psychophysics of face communication

As a highly social species, humans are equipped with a powerful tool for social communication—the face, which can elicit multiple social perceptions in others due to the rich and complex variations of its movements, morphology, and complexion. Consequently, identifying precisely what face information elicits different social perceptions is a complex empirical challenge that has largely remained beyond the reach of traditional research methods. More recently, the emerging field of social psychophysics has developed new methods designed to address this challenge. Here, we introduce and review the foundational methodological developments of social psychophysics, present recent work that has advanced our understanding of the face as a tool for social communication, and discuss the main challenges that lie ahead

Decoding face categories in diagnostic subregions of primary visual cortex

Higher visual areas in the occipitotemporal cortex contain discrete regions for face processing, but it remains unclear if V1 is modulated by top-down influences during face discrimination, and if this is widespread throughout V1 or localized to retinotopic regions processing task-relevant facial features. Employing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we mapped the cortical representation of two feature locations that modulate higher visual areas during categorical judgements – the eyes and mouth. Subjects were presented with happy and fearful faces, and we measured the fMRI signal of V1 regions processing the eyes and mouth whilst subjects engaged in gender and expression categorization tasks. In a univariate analysis, we used a region-of-interest-based general linear model approach to reveal changes in activation within these regions as a function of task. We then trained a linear pattern classifier to classify facial expression or gender on the basis of V1 data from ‘eye’ and ‘mouth’ regions, and from the remaining non-diagnostic V1 region. Using multivariate techniques, we show that V1 activity discriminates face categories both in local ‘diagnostic’ and widespread ‘non-diagnostic’ cortical subregions. This indicates that V1 might receive the processed outcome of complex facial feature analysis from other cortical (i.e. fusiform face area, occipital face area) or subcortical areas (amygdala)

Dit artikel behandelt de specifieke stijl van het eerste deel van de roman fleuve Les Thibault (864 pagina's) van de Franse schrijver Roger Martin du Gard (1881-1958) en analyseert hoe de Nederlandse vertaalster Anneke Alderlieste de stijlkenmerken weergaf in het Nederlands

Harraga dans la littérature francophone: Boualem Sansal, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Mathias Enard et Marie Ndaye

Le présent article offre une analyse de l’immigration clandestine représentée en fiction. Je commenterai quatre productions romanesques francophones qui évoquent la recherche d’une vie meilleure en Europe par des personnages des pays du Sud, à savoir l’Algérie (Boualem Sansal), le Maroc (Tahar Ben Jelloun et Mathias Enard), et un pays d’Afrique subsaharienne qui ne sera nulle part mentionné (Marie Ndiaye). Nous allons voir que Sansal se sert de la fiction pour dénoncer surtout la situation socio-politique en Algérie qui fait que tant de jeunes veulent quitter le pays. Tahar Ben Jelloun et Mathias Enard ont recours à des références intertextuelles afin de replacer le sujet de l’immigration clandestine dans un contexte plus large, et notamment de critiquer les relations coloniales et d’établir un lien avec le passé. Quant à Marie Ndiaye, elle interpelle le lecteur en donnant un témoignage déchirant de l’errance de son personnage, mais en même temps insère des éléments fantastiques qui créent une distance esthétique et affective par rapport à l’expérience migratoire

Tastend door een donkere tunnel: het autobiografische universum van Assia Djebar

Centraal in dit essay staan twee autobiografische romans van de Algerijns-Franse auteur Assia Djebar: L'amour la fantasia (Editions Jean-Claude Lattès, 1985) en Nulle part dans la maison de mon père (Fayard 2007). In het artikel wordt vooral ingezoomd op de complexe verwevenheid van individuele en collectieve herinnering in de autobiografische ruimte (Philippe Lejeune, Le pacte autobiographiqie, 1975) die de teksten van Djebar vormen
