    Recall Me Maybe: The Effects of Music-Evoked Mood on Recognition Memory

    The current study aims to further explore the relationship between musically evoked emotional states and recognition capabilities. Previous research has demonstrated emotional congruency between musical stimuli and subsequent task performance (Mitterschiffthaler et al., 2007). The background music’s emotional valence provides additional insight into how to guide the perception of events and how music-evoked emotions can impact memory (Scherer & Zentner, 2001; Hanser et al., 2015). For instance, happy people will have an easier time remembering positive experiences, rather than sad, or negatively valanced ones while those who are sad will better remember negative experiences, rather than happy, or positively valanced ones (Mayer et al., 1995). The current study consisted of 46 participants, recruited from Belmont Introductory Psychology courses. We hypothesized that participants who are induced to a positive emotional state will rate images more positively, while those in negative states will do the opposite. Additionally, we hypothesized that the recognition accuracy of positively valanced images will be higher for the positive group compared to the negative one, and vice versa. The implication of this study allows us to further understand the interplay of different factors, such as emotional states, and cognitive functioning.     The Effects of Peer Pressure on Social Conformity

    The urge to be a member of a group, to fit in, and peer pressure can lead to many unexpected and unwanted repercussions. We see evidence of such consequences around us and even within ourselves daily. Social media can easily contribute to this problem by either allowing users to present their lives as something they are not, a deceptive representation of their true wants, or by allowing them to express their opinions in a way that denigrates those of others. To examine the link between peer pressure and social conformity, researchers have been studying whether strength of attraction to a group determines degree of conformity. Many studies attest to this hypothesis. This study utilizes 60 participants selected from Belmont University’s students enrolled in Scientific Psychology, General Psychology or Introductory Psychology courses. Students would participate this study under the impression that the study subject was understanding the effects of different type of schooling on long-term retention of information. They were asked to take a short test, during which confederates will attempt to push them to cheat after being explicitly told not to do so. We hypothesized that individuals are more likely to cheat when prompted to do so by their peer and when students are not prompted to cheat, they will not cheat out of fear of disrupting group harmonics. Data collection to test these hypotheses are ongoing, and results will be presented at SURS. The implication of this study allows us to reflect on the choices we make due to peer pressure and to reevaluate whether following the majority is always the right choice

    Magnetism and Faraday Rotation in Oxygen-Deficient Polycrystalline and Single-Crystal Iron-Substituted Strontium Titanate

    Both polycrystalline and single-crystal films of iron-substituted strontium titanate, Sr(Ti[subscript 0.65]Fe[subscript 0.35])O[subscript 3−δ], prepared by pulsed laser deposition, show room-temperature magnetism and Faraday rotation, with the polycrystalline films exhibiting higher saturation magnetization and Faraday rotation. The magnetic properties vary with the oxygen pressure at which the films are grown, showing a maximum at pressures of approximately 4  μ Torr at which the unit-cell volume is largest. The results are discussed in terms of the oxygen stoichiometry and corresponding Fe valence states, the structure and strain state, and the presence of small-volume fractions of metallic Fe in single-crystal films grown at the optimum deposition pressure.     Achieving balance in one\u27s lifestyle and health is essential to maximizing human potential and flourishing. This sort of ‘equilibrium’ is the focus of ongoing debates regarding general health and wellbeing. However, it is generally understood that this balance is a state of complete physical, psychological, and social well-being (Straub, 2022). The research on intuitive health developed throughout the years indicates that one of the key components affecting well-being is relaxation (Keiber, 2000). There are many theorized methods to promote relaxation; among them, meditation is a common technique that has shown to decrease stress and physiological arousal (Rausch, 2006). Unfortunately, despite its effectiveness in promoting relaxation, finding the time to decompress and meditate is something many people find challenging; this inability to slow down can be a consequence of a wide range of everyday variables, such as work hours, general life stressors, social media usage, caffeine intake and exercise. In light of the importance of this underutilized practice, the present study examined the various components of well-being and their respective relationships to relaxation through a short meditation. The primary purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationship between wellbeing and relaxation in college students. In addition, this study investigated the impact of stress, caffeine, social media usage, work, exercise, and sleep on wellbeing and relaxation. It is hypothesized that individuals with self-reported high levels of wellbeing will demonstrate the highest levels of calmness as measured by a MUSE headset. Fifty undergraduate students from Belmont University were recruited from general psychology classes and volunteered for the study. All participants completed a wellbeing assessment and an 11 minute meditation session. The results are currently being processed

    Tocilizumab in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 (RECOVERY): a randomised, controlled, open-label, platform trial

    Background: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of tocilizumab in adult patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 with both hypoxia and systemic inflammation. Methods: This randomised, controlled, open-label, platform trial (Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy [RECOVERY]), is assessing several possible treatments in patients hospitalised with COVID-19 in the UK. Those trial participants with hypoxia (oxygen saturation <92% on air or requiring oxygen therapy) and evidence of systemic inflammation (C-reactive protein ≥75 mg/L) were eligible for random assignment in a 1:1 ratio to usual standard of care alone versus usual standard of care plus tocilizumab at a dose of 400 mg–800 mg (depending on weight) given intravenously. A second dose could be given 12–24 h later if the patient's condition had not improved. The primary outcome was 28-day mortality, assessed in the intention-to-treat population. The trial is registered with ISRCTN (50189673) and ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04381936). Findings: Between April 23, 2020, and Jan 24, 2021, 4116 adults of 21 550 patients enrolled into the RECOVERY trial were included in the assessment of tocilizumab, including 3385 (82%) patients receiving systemic corticosteroids. Overall, 621 (31%) of the 2022 patients allocated tocilizumab and 729 (35%) of the 2094 patients allocated to usual care died within 28 days (rate ratio 0·85; 95% CI 0·76–0·94; p=0·0028). Consistent results were seen in all prespecified subgroups of patients, including those receiving systemic corticosteroids. Patients allocated to tocilizumab were more likely to be discharged from hospital within 28 days (57% vs 50%; rate ratio 1·22; 1·12–1·33; p<0·0001). Among those not receiving invasive mechanical ventilation at baseline, patients allocated tocilizumab were less likely to reach the composite endpoint of invasive mechanical ventilation or death (35% vs 42%; risk ratio 0·84; 95% CI 0·77–0·92; p<0·0001). Interpretation: In hospitalised COVID-19 patients with hypoxia and systemic inflammation, tocilizumab improved survival and other clinical outcomes. These benefits were seen regardless of the amount of respiratory support and were additional to the benefits of systemic corticosteroids.     Convalescent plasma in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 (RECOVERY): a randomised controlled, open-label, platform trial

    Background: Many patients with COVID-19 have been treated with plasma containing anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of convalescent plasma therapy in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Methods: This randomised, controlled, open-label, platform trial (Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy [RECOVERY]) is assessing several possible treatments in patients hospitalised with COVID-19 in the UK. The trial is underway at 177 NHS hospitals from across the UK. Eligible and consenting patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either usual care alone (usual care group) or usual care plus high-titre convalescent plasma (convalescent plasma group). The primary outcome was 28-day mortality, analysed on an intention-to-treat basis. The trial is registered with ISRCTN, 50189673, and ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04381936. Findings: Between May 28, 2020, and Jan 15, 2021, 11558 (71%) of 16287 patients enrolled in RECOVERY were eligible to receive convalescent plasma and were assigned to either the convalescent plasma group or the usual care group. There was no significant difference in 28-day mortality between the two groups: 1399 (24%) of 5795 patients in the convalescent plasma group and 1408 (24%) of 5763 patients in the usual care group died within 28 days (rate ratio 1·00, 95% CI 0·93–1·07; p=0·95). The 28-day mortality rate ratio was similar in all prespecified subgroups of patients, including in those patients without detectable SARS-CoV-2 antibodies at randomisation. Allocation to convalescent plasma had no significant effect on the proportion of patients discharged from hospital within 28 days (3832 [66%] patients in the convalescent plasma group vs 3822 [66%] patients in the usual care group; rate ratio 0·99, 95% CI 0·94–1·03; p=0·57). Among those not on invasive mechanical ventilation at randomisation, there was no significant difference in the proportion of patients meeting the composite endpoint of progression to invasive mechanical ventilation or death (1568 [29%] of 5493 patients in the convalescent plasma group vs 1568 [29%] of 5448 patients in the usual care group; rate ratio 0·99, 95% CI 0·93–1·05; p=0·79). Interpretation: In patients hospitalised with COVID-19, high-titre convalescent plasma did not improve survival or other prespecified clinical outcomes.
