Phenomenology of the Gowdy Universe on
Numerical studies of the plane symmetric, vacuum Gowdy universe on yield strong support for the conjectured asymptotically velocity term
dominated (AVTD) behavior of its evolution toward the singularity except,
perhaps, at isolated spatial points. A generic solution is characterized by
spiky features and apparent ``discontinuities'' in the wave amplitudes. It is
shown that the nonlinear terms in the wave equations drive the system
generically to the ``small velocity'' AVTD regime and that the spiky features
are caused by the absence of these terms at isolated spatial points.Comment: 19 pages, 21 figures, uses Revtex, psfi
Soil biochemistry and microbial activity in vineyards under conventional and organic management at Northeast Brazil.

This region is responsible for 97% of the national exportation of table grapes, including seedless grapes. Based on the fact that orgThe São Francisco Submedium Valley is located at the Brazilian semiarid region and is an important center for irrigated fruit growing. This region is responsible for 97% of the national exportation of table grapes, including seedless grapes. Based on the fact that organic fertilization can improve soil quality, we compared the effects of conventional and organic soil management on microbial activity and mycorrhization of seedless grape crops. We measured glomerospores number, most probable number (MPN) of propagules, richness of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) species, AMF root colonization, EE-BRSP production, carbon microbial biomass (C-MB), microbial respiration, fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity (FDA) and metabolic coefficient (qCO2). The organic management led to an increase in all variables with the exception of EE-BRSP and qCO2. Mycorrhizal colonization increased from 4.7% in conventional crops to 15.9% in organic crops. Spore number ranged from 4.1 to 12.4 per 50 g-1 soil in both management systems. The most probable number of AMF propagules increased from 79 cm-3 soil in the conventional system to 110 cm-3 soil in the organic system. Microbial carbon, CO2 emission, and FDA activity were increased by 100 to 200% in the organic crop. Thirteen species of AMF were identified, the majority in the organic cultivation system. Acaulospora excavata, Entrophospora infrequens, Glomus sp.3 and Scutellospora sp. were found only in the organically managed crop. S. gregaria was found only in the conventional crop. Organically managed vineyards increased mycorrhization and general soil microbial activity
Generation of Bianchi type V cosmological models with varying -term
Bianchi type V perfect fluid cosmological models are investigated with
cosmological term varying with time. Using a generation technique
(Camci {\it et al.}, 2001), it is shown that the Einstein's field equations are
solvable for any arbitrary cosmic scale function. Solutions for particular
forms of cosmic scale functions are also obtained. The cosmological constant is
found to be decreasing function of time, which is supported by results from
recent type Ia supernovae observations. Some physical aspects of the models are
also discussed.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, submitted to CJ
On Higher Order Gravities, Their Analogy to GR, and Dimensional Dependent Version of Duff's Trace Anomaly Relation
An almost brief, though lengthy, review introduction about the long history
of higher order gravities and their applications, as employed in the
literature, is provided. We review the analogous procedure between higher order
gravities and GR, as described in our previous works, in order to highlight its
important achievements. Amongst which are presentation of an easy
classification of higher order Lagrangians and its employment as a
\emph{criteria} in order to distinguish correct metric theories of gravity. For
example, it does not permit the inclusion of only one of the second order
Lagrangians in \emph{isolation}. But, it does allow the inclusion of the
cosmological term. We also discuss on the compatibility of our procedure and
the Mach idea. We derive a dimensional dependent version of Duff's trace
anomaly relation, which in \emph{four}-dimension is the same as the usual Duff
relation. The Lanczos Lagrangian satisfies this new constraint in \emph{any}
dimension. The square of the Weyl tensor identically satisfies it independent
of dimension, however, this Lagrangian satisfies the previous relation only in
three and four dimensions.Comment: 30 pages, added reference
Picturing the nation : The Celtic periphery as discursive other in the archaeological displays of the museum of Scotland
Using the archaeological displays at the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, this paper examines the exhibition as a site of identity creation through the negotiations between categories of same and Other. Through an analysis of the poetics of display, the paper argues that the exhibition constructs a particular relationship between the Celtic Fringe and Scottish National identity that draws upon the historical discourses of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland as a place and a time \u27apart\u27. This will be shown to have implications for the display of archaeological material in museums but also for contemporary understandings of Scottish National identity. <br /
Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s
using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays
in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at
production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment
at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity.
We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the
B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2,
-1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in
agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model
value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +-
0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by
other experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Phys. Rev. Lett 109, 171802 (2012
