The exergy costs of electrical power, cooling, and waste heat from a hybrid system based on a solid oxide fuel cell and an absorption refrigeration system

    Get PDF
This paper applies the Exergy Cost Theory (ECT) to a hybrid system based on a 500 kWe solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack and on a vapor-absorption refrigeration (VAR) system. To achieve this, a model comprised of chemical, electrochemical, thermodynamic, and thermoeconomic equations is developed using the software, Engineering Equation Solver (EES). The model is validated against previous works. This approach enables the unit exergy costs (electricity, cooling, and residues) to be computed by a productive structure defined by components, resources, products, and residues. Most importantly, it allows us to know the contribution of the environment and of the residues to the unit exergy cost of the product of the components. Finally, the simulation of different scenarios makes it possible to analyze the impact of stack current density, fuel use, temperature across the stack, and anode gas recirculation on the unit exergy costs of electrical power, cooling, and residues

ABSTRACT The habits of Mexicans to carry out physical or sports activities are reduced to less than an hour a day a week; data from the National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports show that Mexicans conceive physical activity and sport as "weekend" events and not as a systematic practice that requires at least 20 minutes every third day for improved exercise the level of health and promotes physical development; Otherwise we have as a consequence that as a result of sedentary lifestyle there is an increase in chronic degenerative diseases and also poor nutrition and excess pressure are common factors that trigger a large number of problems that affect individuals also psychologically. Sedentary lifestyles are prevalent in almost all urban areas throughout the world, so much so that inactivity is one of the major risk factors behind the current epidemic proportions of non-communicable diseases such as obesity. All these reasons being that it was decided to develop a study with workers in the productive age to be able to propose strategies that allow workers a healthier lifestyle. Therefore, a study was carried out with the objective of knowing within a total population sample of 894 workers, 870 men and 24 women, their lifestyle. Keywords: Habits of health, discipline, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, food

This work employs Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using SolidWorks Sustainability to assess the environmental impact of 355 ml glass, aluminum, and PET packaging used by Coca-Cola in Mexico. The four measured impacts include carbon footprint, energy consumption, atmospheric acidification, and water eutrophication. It analyzes stages from material selection to end-of-life, considering factors such as manufacturing region, usage period, production process, and transportation. Data from SEMARNAT, the Chamber of Deputies, FEMSA, and Arca Continental are used to obtain results and compare the sustainability of packaging materials.Este trabajo utiliza el Análisis de Ciclo de Vida (LCA) a través de SolidWorks Sustainability para evaluar el impacto ambiental de envases de vidrio, aluminio y PET de 355 ml utilizados por Coca-Cola en México. Statistical physics of vaccination

Historically, infectious diseases caused considerable damage to human societies, and they continue to do so today. To help reduce their impact, mathematical models of disease transmission have been studied to help understand disease dynamics and inform prevention strategies. Vaccination–one of the most important preventive measures of modern times–is of great interest both theoretically and empirically. And in contrast to traditional approaches, recent research increasingly explores the pivotal implications of individual behavior and heterogeneous contact patterns in populations. Our report reviews the developmental arc of theoretical epidemiology with emphasis on vaccination, as it led from classical models assuming homogeneously mixing (mean-field) populations and ignoring human behavior, to recent models that account for behavioral feedback and/or population spatial/social structure. Many of the methods used originated in statistical physics, such as lattice and network models, and their associated analytical frameworks. Similarly, the feedback loop between vaccinating behavior and disease propagation forms a coupled nonlinear system with analogs in physics. We also review the new paradigm of digital epidemiology, wherein sources of digital data such as online social media are mined for high-resolution information on epidemiologically relevant individual behavior. Armed with the tools and concepts of statistical physics, and further assisted by new sources of digital data, models that capture nonlinear interactions between behavior and disease dynamics offer a novel way of modeling real-world phenomena, and can help improve health outcomes. We conclude the review by discussing open problems in the field and promising directions for future research

A isotropic n-dimensional quadrature transform and its applications in fringe pattern processing

In fringe pattern processing, quadrature operators are useful to obtain the corresponding modulating phase. In the case that a carrier exists (spatial or temporal), there are good methods for phase demodulation as Fourier analysis and asynchronous methods, for example. However, if there is no carrier or is to low, robust demodulation from a single image is a difficult task. In this work we present some recent advances in the processing of single fringe patterns with closed fringes based in a isotropic n-dimensional quadrature transform. In particular we address several problems related with the application of this quadrature operator. One of these problems is the Fringe direction, its role in the demodulation process is discussed and a practical method for its computation is presented. Fringe pattern normalization is also an important subject in the demodulation process from a singe image, taking this into account we present a technique for isotropic fringe pattern normalization based in the n-dimensional quadrature transform. All these techniques together configure a robust method for automatic demodulation of single fringe patterns. The performance and limitations of the method are discussed and illustrated by experimental results
