On X-ray Optical Depth in the Coronae of Active Stars
We have investigated the optical thickness of the coronal plasma through the
analysis of high-resolution X-ray spectra of a large sample of active stars
observed with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on Chandra. In
particular, we probed for the presence of significant resonant scattering in
the strong Lyman series lines arising from hydrogen-like oxygen and neon ions.
The active RS CVn-type binaries II Peg and IM Peg and the single M dwarf EV Lac
show significant optical depth. For these active coronae, the Lya/Lyb ratios
are significantly depleted as compared with theoretical predictions and with
the same ratios observed in similar active stars. Interpreting these decrements
in terms of resonance scattering of line photons out of the line-of-sight, we
are able to derive an estimate for the typical size of coronal structures, and
from these we also derive estimates of coronal filling factors. For all three
sources we find that the both the photon path length as a fraction of the
stellar radius, and the implied surface filling factors are very small and
amount to a few percent at most. The measured Lya/Lyb ratios are in good
agreement with APED theoretical predictions, thus indicating negligible optical
depth, for the other sources in our sample. We discuss the implications for
coronal structuring and heating flux requirements. For the stellar sample as a
whole, the data suggest increasing quenching of Lya relative to Lyb as function
of both L_x/L_bol and the density-sensitive MgXI forbidden to intercombination

An example of using oil-production induced microseismicity in characterizing a naturally fractured reservoir
Microseismic monitoring was conducted using downhole geophone tools deployed in the Seventy-Six oil field, Clinton County, Kentucky. Over a 7-month monitoring period, 3237 microearthquakes were detected during primary oil production; no injection operations were conducted. Gross changes in production rate correlate with microearthquake event rate with event rate lagging production-rate changes by about 2 weeks. Hypocenters and first-motion data have revealed low-angle, thrust fracture zones above and below the currently drained depth interval. Production history, well logs and drill tests indicate the seismically-active fractures are previously drained intervals that have subsequently recovered to hydrostatic pressure via brine invasion. The microseismic data have revealed, for the first time, the importance of the low-angle fractures in the storage and production of oil in the study area. The seismic behavior is consistent with poroelastic models that predict slight increases in compressive stress above and below currently drained volumes
Friedrich Hayek and his visits to Chile
F. A. Hayek took two trips to Chile, the first in 1977, the second in 1981. The visits were controversial. On the first trip he met with General Augusto Pinochet, who had led a coup that overthrew Salvador Allende in 1973. During his 1981 visit, Hayek gave interviews that were published in the Chilean newspaper El Mercurio and in which he discussed authoritarian regimes and the problem of unlimited democracy. After each trip, he complained that the western press had painted an unfair picture of the economic situation under the Pinochet regime. Drawing on archival material, interviews, and past research, we provide a full account of this controversial episode in Hayek’s life
Felony Murder and Capital Punishment: an Examination of the Deterrence Question
A proper test of the deterrent effect of the death penalty must consider capital homicides. However, the criterion variable in most investigations has been total homicides—most of which bear no legal or theoretical relationship to capital punishment. To address this fundamental data problem, this investigation used Federal Bureau of Investigation data for 1976–1987 to examine the relationship between capital punishment and felony murder, the most common type of capital homicide. We conducted time series analyses of monthly felony murder rates, the frequency of executions, and the amount and type of television coverage of executions over the period. The analyses revealed occasional departures (for vehicle theft and narcotics killings) from the null hypotheses. However, on balance, and in line with the vast majority of capital punishment studies, this investigation found no consistent evidence that executions and the television coverage they receive are associated significantly with rates for total, index, or different types of felony murder
