    Data analysis and archival

    The purpose of this task is the acquisition, distribution, archival, and analysis of data collected during and in support of the Upper Atmospheric Research Program (UARP) field experiments. Meteorological and U2 data from the 1984 Stratosphere-Troposphere Exchange Project (STEP) was analyzed to determine characteristics of internal atmospheric waves. CDROM's containing data from the 1987 STEP, 1987 Airborne Antarctic Ozone Expedition (AAOE), and the 1989 Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition (AASE) were produced for archival and distribution of those data sets. The AASE CDROM contains preliminary data and a final release is planned for February 1990. Comparisons of data from the NASA ER-2 Meteorological Measurement System (MMS) with radar tracking and radiosonde data show good agreement. Planning for a Meteorological Support Facility continues.     Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    The China Clipper — fast advective transport of radon-rich air from the Asian boundary layer to the upper troposphere near California

    International audienceA series of upper tropospheric radon concentration measurements made over the eastern Pacific and west coast of the United States during the summers of 1983 and 1984 has revealed the occurrence of unexpectedly high [ > 16 pCi/SCM] radon concentrations for 9 of the 61 measurements (and 6 of the 13 flights). A frequency distribution plot of the set of 61 observations shows a distinct bimodal distribution, with approximately ~ of the observations falling close to 1 pCi/SCM, and ~ falling in a high concentration mode centered at about 11 pCi/SCM. Trajectory and synoptic analyses for two of the flights on which such high radon concentrations were observed indicate that this radon-rich air originated in the Asian boundary layer, ascended in cumulus updrafts, and was carried eastward in the fast moving air on the anti-cyclonic side of the upper tropospheric jet. Transit times were of the order of 3 days; however, in one instance, transport from China to a point a few hundred kilometers west of San Francisco occurred in 48 h. These findings suggest that the combination of rapid vertical transport from the surface boundary layer to the upper troposphere, followed by rapid horizontal transport eastward represents an efficient mode of long-transport for other, chemically reactive atmospheric trace constituents

    Discovery of Glucocorticoid Receptor-β in Mice with a Role in Metabolism

    Glucocorticoid hormones control diverse physiological processes, including metabolism and immunity, by activating the major glucocorticoid receptor (GR) isoform, GRα. However, humans express an alternative isoform, human (h)GRβ, that acts as an inhibitor of hGRα to produce a state of glucocorticoid resistance. Indeed, evidence exists that hGRβ contributes to many diseases and resistance to glucocorticoid hormone therapy. However, rigorous testing of the GRβ contribution has not been possible, because rodents, especially mice, are not thought to express the β-isoform. Here, we report expression of GRβ mRNA and protein in the mouse. The mGRβ isoform arises from a distinct alternative splicing mechanism utilizing intron 8, rather than exon 9 as in humans. The splicing event produces a form of β that is similar in structure and functionality to hGRβ. Mouse (m)GRβ has a degenerate C-terminal region that is the same size as hGRβ. Using a variety of newly developed tools, such as a mGRβ-specific antibody and constructs for overexpression and short hairpin RNA knockdown, we demonstrate that mGRβ cannot bind dexamethasone agonist, is inhibitory of mGRα, and is up-regulated by inflammatory signals. These properties are the same as reported for hGRβ. Additionally, novel data is presented that mGRβ is involved in metabolism. When murine tissue culture cells are treated with insulin, no effect on mGRα expression was observed, but GRβ was elevated. In mice subjected to fasting-refeeding, a large increase of GRβ was seen in the liver, whereas mGRα was unchanged.
