This essay follows the productive discussion of Giorgio Agamben’s The Open: Man and Animal that took place as part of the ‘Openness in Medieval Culture’ conference at the ICI Berlin. Tate's Algorithm for F-theory GUTs with two U(1)s

We present a systematic study of elliptic fibrations for F-theory realizations of gauge theories with two U(1) factors. In particular, we determine a new class of SU(5) x U(1)^2 fibrations, which can be used to engineer Grand Unified Theories, with multiple, differently charged, 10 matter representations. To determine these models we apply Tate's algorithm to elliptic fibrations with two U(1) symmetries, which are realized in terms of a cubic in P^2. In the process, we find fibers which are not characterized solely in terms of vanishing orders, but with some additional specialization, which plays a key role in the construction of these novel SU(5) models with multiple 10 matter. Their two different conceptions of language, of its presuppositional structure, and of its order of ‘metaphysical presence’ are considered, in particular by turning to Werner Hamacher’s work on these and related matters

The Other Side of Italian Thought:Emanuele Severino

Contemporary Italian philosophy has become recognized internationally as a distinct tradition, often associated with a post-Foucauldian notion of biopolitics and essayistic forms enabling a quick reaction to the affairs of the day yet without compromising the systematic ambitions of philosophical thought. But Emanuele Severino (1929–2020) shows a radically different side of Italian philosophy: unabashedly metaphysical, uncompromisingly Parmenidean, and increasingly recognized as one of the most remarkable and challenging thinkers of the twentieth century — in the words of Italian philosopher Massimo Cacciari, the only alternative to Martin Heidegger. Over the course of six decades, from La struttura originaria (1958) to Testimoniando il destino (2019), Severino developed a most original and untimely philosophical project, which attempts to think the relationship between nihilism and the tradition of the West, the incontrovertibility of the truth of being, the contradiction of becoming, the eternity of all beings. Severino came to refer to his work as to ‘the language that testifies to destiny’, namely a testimony to the eternal and necessary structure of the appearing and disappearing of the eternal beings — the ‘destiny of necessity’ (Destino della necessità, 1980). The symposium The Other Side of Italian Thought: Emanuele Severino aims to introduce the principal axes along which Severino’s thought can be unfolded to an international audience. The symposium thus joins an increasing number of international projects of the last few years: the first edited translation into English of one of Severino’s most important works, The Essence of Nihilism (2016, A. Carrera and I. Testoni, eds), the foundation of an international journal dedicated to Severino’s thought, Eternity &amp; Contradiction: Journal of Fundamental Ontology (G. Comparison between Rapid Intraoperative and Central Laboratory Parathormone Dosage in 12 Kidney Transplant Candidates

Background The rapid intraoperative parathormone (PTH) and at central laboratory PTH dosage gives similar results. The central laboratory provides results in longer times and higher costs. Intraoperative measurement can reduce time and costs during parathyroidectomy. Methods Twelve patients undergoing parathyroidectomy for hyperparathyroidism renal transplant candidates were included. Diagnosis was made by laboratory tests (serum calcium, PTH) and imaging techniques (ultrasonography and scintigraphy). All patients presented PTH levels of >400 pg/mL (the limit value to be maintained in list for kidney transplantation) and resistant to medical therapy. For each patient, 2 blood samples were collected before surgery at anesthesia induction for PTH testing intraoperative (rapid assay) and central laboratory, and 10 minutes after the removal of each gland. The times from collection-processing to communication to the surgeon of the results were compared for both the methods. It was considered successful the abatement of PTH of ≥70% at rapid intraoperative testing and consequently surgical intervention stopped before communication of central laboratory PTH testing. Results The average time of reporting the test results of the central laboratory was 41.5 minutes (SD ± 9), whereas with the rapid intraoperative PTH (ioPTH) testing the average time was 9.9 minutes (SD ± 2.02). An average of 33.6 minutes of the duration per intervention (SD ± 10.27) were virtually saved with the use of ioPTH testing. The 2 values of the Pearson correlation (ρ) of 0.99 obtained (for baseline) and 0.975 (for the 10-minute) lead us to conclude that there is an excellent correlation between the series of data. Conclusions Rapid ioPTH testing, owing to its accuracy, permits a dramatic reduction of operating time for patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism that need to be treated before inclusion on the waiting list

Tumour-associated macrophages correlate with microvascular bed extension in colorectal cancer patients

Tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs) represent pivotal components of tumour microenvironment promoting angiogenesis, tumour progression and invasion. In colorectal cancer (CRC), there are no conclusive data about the role of TAMs in angiogenesis-mediated tumour progression. In this study, we aimed to evaluate a correlation between TAMs, TAM immunostained area (TAMIA) microvascular density (MVD), endothelial area (EA) and cancer cells positive to VEGF-A (CCP-VEGF-A) in primary tumour tissue of locally advanced CRC patients undergone to radical surgery. A series of 76 patients with CRC were selected and evaluated by immunohistochemistry and image analysis. An anti-CD68 antibody was employed to assess TAMs and TAMIA expression, an anti-CD34 antibody was utilized to detect MVD and EA expression, whereas an anti-VEGF-A antibody was used to detect CCP-VEGF-A; then, tumour sections were evaluated by image analysis methods. The mean&nbsp;±&nbsp;S.D. of TAMs, MVD and CCP-VEGF-A was 65.58&nbsp;±&nbsp;21.14, 28.53&nbsp;±&nbsp;7.75 and 63%&nbsp;±&nbsp;37%, respectively; the mean&nbsp;±&nbsp;S.D. of TAMIA and EA was 438.37&nbsp;±&nbsp;124.14μ2 and 186.73&nbsp;±&nbsp;67.22μ2, respectively. A significant correlation was found between TAMs, TAMIA, MVD and EA each other (r&nbsp;ranging from 0.69 to 0.84; P ranging from 0.000 to 0.004). The high level of expression of TAMs and TAMIA in tumour tissue and the significant correlation with both MVD and EA illustrate that TAMs could represent a marker that plays an important role in promoting angiogenesis-mediated CRC. In this context, novel agents killing TAMs might be evaluated in clinical trials as a new anti-angiogenic approach
