Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set

    Get PDF
We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2, -1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by other experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Phys. A fully integrated silicon-germanium X-Band VCO

    Get PDF
The design and realisation of a fully integrated Silicon Germanium (SiGe) X-Band Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) is presented. It performs low phase noise and 10% tuning bandwidth at low voltage bias supply. The VCO, comprising integrated inductors and output transformers, is implemented in a SiGe technology which is suitable for high volume production. The features of this VCO, the adopted methodology and the herein proven potential of the technology make this work a good starting point for the design of next generation totally integrated fast PLL’s. The paper will describe also the architectures chosen and the design techniques adopted

Recyclability and reutilization of carbon fiber fabric/epoxy composites

    No full text
Abstract Solid carbon fiber/epoxy laminates manufactured by liquid resin infusion of twill fabric reinforcement are recycled in a bath of boiling sulfuric acid to separate the fibers from the matrix. The recycled reinforcement consists of long fibers arranged in a random, entangled mat. Using the same epoxy matrix and infusion materials and process, the recycled fibers are reutilized to manufacture solid laminates. The physical properties of the recycled laminates are evaluated by means of pulse-echo ultrasound, visual microscopy, and fiber volume content. The average fiber volume content of the recycled laminates is 33%, compared to the 62% of the twill laminates. The mechanical properties of the recycled composite include tension modulus and strength, compression modulus and strength, three-point bend flexure strength, and short beam shear strength. The properties are compared against the values of the twill reinforcement with quasiisotropic stacking sequence. Results show that the recycled material offers promising elastic properties and strength values, similar to those of advanced carbon fiber sheet molding compounds, and therefore can be used as structural material

Can immunohistochemistry improve the pathological diagnosis of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorders?

    No full text
Purpose: The term of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorder includes all grades of abnormal placentation. It is crucial for pathologist provide standardized diagnostic assessment to evaluate the outcome of management strategies. Moreover, a correct and safe diagnosis is useful in the medico-legal field when it becomes difficult for the gynecologist to demonstrate the suitability and legitimacy of demolitive treatment. The purposes of our study were: (1) to assess histopathologic features according to the recent guidelines; (2) to determine if immunohistochemistry can be useful to identify extravillous trophoblast (EVT) and to measure the depth of infiltration into the myometrium to improve the diagnosis of PAS. Methods: The retrospective study was conducted on 30 cases of gravid hysterectomy with histopathologic diagnosis of PAS. To identify the depth of EVT, immunohistochemical stainings were performed using anti MNF116 (cytokeratins 5, 6, 8, 17, 19), actin-SM, HPL (Human Placental Lactogen), vimentin and GATA3 antibodies. Results: Our cases were graded based on the degree of invasion of the myometrium. Ten were grade 1 (33.3%), 12 grade 2 (40%) and 8 grade 3A (26.7%). EVT invasion was best seen and evident by double immunostainings with actin-SM and cytokeratins, actin-SM and HPL, actin-SM and GATA3. Conclusion: The role of pathologist is decisive to determine the different grades of PAS. A better understanding of the depth of myometrial invasion can be achieved by the use of immunohistochemistry affording an important tool to obtain reproducible grading of PAS. This purpose is crucial in the setting of postoperative quality reviews and particularly in the forensic medicine field

Effects of 2-iodohexadecanal in the physiology of thyroid cells

    No full text
Iodide has direct effects on thyroid function. Several iodinated lipids are biosynthesized by the thyroid and they were postulated as intermediaries in the action of iodide. Among them, 2-iodohexadecanal (2-IHDA) has been identified and proposed to play a role in thyroid autoregulation. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of iodide and 2-IHDA on thyroid cell physiology. For this purpose, FRTL-5 thyroid cells were incubated with the two compounds during 24 or 48 h and several thyroid parameters were evaluated such as: iodide uptake, intracellular calcium and H2O2 levels. To further explore the molecular mechanism involved in 2-IHDA action, transcript and protein levels of genes involved in thyroid hormone biosynthesis, as well as the transcriptional expression of these genes were evaluated in the presence of iodide and 2-IHDA. The results obtained indicate that 2-IHDA reproduces the action of excess iodide on the "Wolff-Chaikoff" effect as well as on thyroid specific genes transcription supporting its role in thyroid autoregulation.Fil: Rossich, Luciano Esteban.
