The Demonstration of Effective Pedagogy to Secondary Education Candidates in an Early Field Experience
This research examined an early field experience model supported by instructional coaching that was implemented within an undergraduate educator preparation program for secondary language arts and social sciences candidates. A mixed methods design examined candidates’ stages of concern based on the Fuller (1969) stages of concern theory in relationship to Marzano’s (2003) teacher-level factors of effective schools. While teacher candidates were able to demonstrate each component of effective classroom pedagogy, their level of success varied. At the beginning of the experience, self-concerns were high and characterized by candidates’ identities as students and ego-driven considerations. As the experience progressed, candidates focused more on task concerns and the compliant engagement of students. Evidence of impact concerns was limited. Sustained time and university faculty supervision were key elements in a successful early field experience
Shared decision making in patients with low risk chest pain: prospective randomized pragmatic trial.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of shared decision making with usual care in choice of admission for observation and further cardiac testing or for referral for outpatient evaluation in patients with possible acute coronary syndrome.
DESIGN: Multicenter pragmatic parallel randomized controlled trial.
SETTING: Six emergency departments in the United States.
PARTICIPANTS: 898 adults (aged \u3e17 years) with a primary complaint of chest pain who were being considered for admission to an observation unit for cardiac testing (451 were allocated to the decision aid and 447 to usual care), and 361 emergency clinicians (emergency physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants) caring for patients with chest pain.
INTERVENTIONS: Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) by an electronic, web based system to shared decision making facilitated by a decision aid or to usual care. The primary outcome, selected by patient and caregiver advisers, was patient knowledge of their risk for acute coronary syndrome and options for care; secondary outcomes were involvement in the decision to be admitted, proportion of patients admitted for cardiac testing, and the 30 day rate of major adverse cardiac events.
RESULTS: Compared with the usual care arm, patients in the decision aid arm had greater knowledge of their risk for acute coronary syndrome and options for care (questions correct: decision aid, 4.2 v usual care, 3.6; mean difference 0.66, 95% confidence interval 0.46 to 0.86), were more involved in the decision (observing patient involvement scores: decision aid, 18.3 v usual care, 7.9; 10.3, 9.1 to 11.5), and less frequently decided with their clinician to be admitted for cardiac testing (decision aid, 37% v usual care, 52%; absolute difference 15%; P
CONCLUSIONS: Use of a decision aid in patients at low risk for acute coronary syndrome increased patient knowledge about their risk, increased engagement, and safely decreased the rate of admission to an observation unit for cardiac testing.Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01969240
The use of synchrotron edge topography to study polytype nearest neighbour relationships in SiC
A brief review of the phenomenon of polytypism is presented and its prolific abundance in Silicon Carbide discussed. An attempt has been made to emphasise modern developments in understanding this unique behaviour. The properties of Synchrotron Radiation are shown to be ideally suited to studies of polytypes in various materials and in particular the coalescence of polytypes in SiC. It is shown that with complex multipolytypic crystals the technique of edge topography allows the spatial extent of disorder to be determined and, from the superposition of Laue type reflections, neighbourhood relationships between polytypes can be deduced. Finer features have now been observed with the advent of second generation synchrotrons, the resolution available enabling the regions between adjoining polytypes to be examined more closely. It is shown that Long Period Polytypes and One Dimensionally Disordered layers often found in association with regions of high defect density are common features at polytype boundaries. An idealised configuration termed a "polytype sandwich" is presented as a model for the structure of SiC grown by the modified Lely technique. The frequency of common sandwich edge profiles are classified and some general trends of polytype neighbourism are summarised
X-ray Properties of the First SZE-selected Galaxy Cluster Sample from the South Pole Telescope
We present results of X-ray observations of a sample of 15 clusters selected
via their imprint on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from the thermal
Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. These clusters are a subset of the first
SZ-selected cluster catalog, obtained from observations of 178 deg^2 of sky
surveyed by the South Pole Telescope. Using X-ray observations with Chandra and
XMM-Newton, we estimate the temperature, T_X, and mass, M_g, of the
intracluster medium (ICM) within r_500 for each cluster. From these, we
calculate Y_X=M_g T_X and estimate the total cluster mass using a M_500-Y_X
scaling relation measured from previous X-ray studies. The integrated
Comptonization, Y_SZ, is derived from the SZ measurements, using additional
information from the X-ray measured gas density profiles and a universal
temperature profile. We calculate scaling relations between the X-ray and SZ
observables, and find results generally consistent with other measurements and
the expectations from simple self-similar behavior. Specifically, we fit a
Y_SZ-Y_X relation and find a normalization of 0.82 +- 0.07, marginally
consistent with the predicted ratio of Y_SZ/Y_X=0.91+-0.01 that would be
expected from the density and temperature models used in this work. Using the
Y_X derived mass estimates, we fit a Y_SZ-M_500 relation and find a slope
consistent with the self-similar expectation of Y_SZ ~ M^5/3 with a
normalization consistent with predictions from other X-ray studies. We compare
the X-ray mass estimates to previously published SZ mass estimates derived from
cosmological simulations of the SPT survey. We find that the SZ mass estimates
are lower by a factor of 0.89+-0.06, which is within the ~15% systematic

The twilight of the Liberal Social Contract? On the Reception of Rawlsian Political Liberalism
This chapter discusses the Rawlsian project of public reason, or public justification-based 'political' liberalism, and its reception. After a brief philosophical rather than philological reconstruction of the project, the chapter revolves around a distinction between idealist and realist responses to it. Focusing on political liberalism’s critical reception illuminates an overarching question: was Rawls’s revival of a contractualist approach to liberal legitimacy a fruitful move for liberalism and/or the social contract tradition? The last section contains a largely negative answer to that question. Nonetheless the chapter's conclusion shows that the research programme of political liberalism provided and continues to provide illuminating insights into the limitations of liberal contractualism, especially under conditions of persistent and radical diversity. The programme is, however, less receptive to challenges to do with the relative decline of the power of modern states
Zgamma Production in pbarp Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV and Limits on Anomalous ZZgamma and Zgammagamma Couplings
We present a study of Z +gamma + X production in p-bar p collisions at
sqrt{S}=1.8 TeV from 97 (87) pb^{-1} of data collected in the eegamma
(mumugamma) decay channel with the D0 detector at Fermilab. The event yield and
kinematic characteristics are consistent with the Standard Model predictions.
We obtain limits on anomalous ZZgamma and Zgammagamma couplings for form factor
scales Lambda = 500 GeV and Lambda = 750 GeV. Combining this analysis with our
previous results yields 95% CL limits |h{Z}_{30}| < 0.36, |h{Z}_{40}| < 0.05,
|h{gamma}_{30}| < 0.37, and |h{gamma}_{40}| < 0.05 for a form factor scale
