    Nanostructured materials with highly dispersed Au–Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 nanodomains: A route to temperature stable Au catalysts?

    Our strategy to inhibit Au(0) growth with temperature involves the preparation of ultrafine Au clusters that are highly dispersed and strongly interacting with a thermally stable high-surface-area substrate. Temperature-stable Au-cluster-based catalysts were successfully prepared through the controlled synthesis of 3.5 nm Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 colloidal building blocks containing tailored strongly bound Au-cluster precursors. With the objective of stabilizing these Au clusters with temperature, grain growth of Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 nanodomains was inhibited by their dispersion through Al2O3 nanodomains. High surface area Au–Ce0.5Zr0.5O2–Al2O3 nanostructured composites were thus designed highlighting the drastic effect of Au cluster dispersion on Au(0) cluster growth. High thermal stability of our Au(0)-cluster-based catalysts was shown with the surprising catalytic activity for CO conversion observed on our nanostructured materials heated to temperatures as high as 800 C for 6 h

    Characteristics of Psychiatric Emergency Situations and the Decision-Making Process Leading to Involuntary Admission

    Introduction: Involuntary admissions to psychiatric hospitals, regardless of their beneficial effects, violate the patients' autonomy. To keep such measures at a minimum and develop less restricting and coercive alternatives, a better understanding of the psychiatric emergency situations which end up in involuntary admissions is needed. This descriptive and exploratory study investigates the consultations leading to involuntary admission and the decision-making process of the referring physicians.Methods: We developed an online questionnaire to collect data on the characteristics of the consultation leading to an involuntary admission, including influencing factors from the referring physicians‘ perspective, as well as their professional background. We included 107 physicians who completed the questionnaire after they had referred patients for involuntary admission to one major psychiatric hospital in Switzerland.Results: The referring physicians were heterogeneous regarding their medical background and experience with psychiatric emergency situations. The consultations were time consuming and took place in various locations. Clinical findings, third-party anamnesis and a known psychiatric diagnosis contributed strongest to the decision to admit involuntarily. “Protection from danger to self” was named most frequently as purpose of the admission.Discussion: This study emphasizes the variety of psychiatric emergency situations leading to involuntary admissions. In most cases, several parties are involved and influence the decision together with medical and social factors. To reduce the number of involuntary admissions, alternatives for patients with a high symptom load and at risk of harming themselves are needed. Possible approaches to achieve that reduction and recommendations for further research are provided

    Multi order correction algorithms to remove image distortions from mass spectrometry imaging datasets

    Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry imaging is a rapidly evolving technology. Its main application is the study of the distribution of small molecules on biological tissues. The sequential image acquisition process remains susceptible to measurement distortions that can render imaging data less analytically useful. Most of these artifacts show a repetitive nature from tile to tile. Here we statistically describe these distortions and derive two different algorithms to correct them. Both, a generalized linear model approach and the linear discriminant analysis approach are able to increase image quality for negative and positive ion mode datasets. Additionally, performing simulation studies with repetitive and non-repetitive tiling error we show that both algorithms are only removing repetitive distortions. It is further shown that the spectral component of the dataset is not altered by the use of these correction methods. Both algorithms presented in this work greatly increase the image quality and improve the analytical usefulness of distorted images dramatically

    Les 7 et 8 avril 2015 à Paris, le ministère de l'Ecologie a organisé, avec l'appui de la Fédération nationale des Communes forestières et en lien avec la Fédération des Parcs naturels régionaux, le séminaire de clôture de l'appel à projet sur « la prise en compte de la biodiversité dans les Stratégies locales de développement forestier (SLDF) ». Les SLDF désignent des outils de développement tels que les Chartes forestières de territoires (CFT) et les Plans de Développement de Massif (PDM). Animatrice du réseau des CFT, la Fédération nationale des Communes forestières a suivi l'appel à projet depuis son lancement en 2012, dans le cadre de la Stratégie nationale de la Biodiversité (SNB). En présence des ministères en charge de la biodiversité (MEDDE) et de la forêt (MAAF), ce séminaire a d'abord présenté un panorama des projets réalisés. Les objectifs: évaluer les résultats, les facteurs de réussites et les difficultés rencontrées, valoriser les expériences menées et en tirer des enseignements pour une diffusion des méthodes et des pratiques pour d'autres territoires. Ont ainsi témoigné des porteurs de démarches territoriales forêt-bois, des élus et des acteurs de l'environnement et de la recherche. La qualité des projets en termes de partenariat, de sensibilisation sur le terrain et de dialogue entre les différents acteurs a été unanimement soulignée. Les collectivités locales ont été identifiées comme cheffes de file de ces initiatives pionnières. L'accent a été mis la première journée sur les moyens de connaissance de la biodiversité et sa prise en compte dans la gestion forestière : production de données, d'informations et appropriation par les acteurs concernés. Mais aussi la diffusion de cette connaissance, notamment auprès des professionnels de la filière comme les Entrepreneurs de Travaux forestiers (ETF) et sa concrétisation dans les documents de gestion forestière: plans simples de gestion, documents d'aménagement. Pour poursuivre ces démarches, un lien plus fort doit être créé entre les territoires forestiers et la recherche qui dispose de méthodes et de connaissances approfondies, notamment sur les questions climatiques. Les retours d'expériences ont confirmé la nécessité d'intégrer la biodiversité dans des démarches plus transversales. Elle ne doit pas être "sacralisée" en forêt mais "socialisée", ont rappelé plusieurs intervenants. De plus, ces démarches doivent être incitatives plutôt que prescriptives et règlementaires. Il faut "donner envie" et même proposer des outils "ludiques", adaptés à un public large de propriétaires. Les projets ont aussi montré que la biodiversité apporte une vraie plus-value économique sur les territoires: résilience des forêts, respect des sols et qualité de l'eau, meilleure adaptation aux changements climatiques. Un bon exemple : les Projets Sylvicoles Territoriaux (PST) de la région Rhône-Alpes vise, au-delà de la production de bois d'œuvre, à optimiser les services écosystémiques rendus par la forêt et à décloisonner les approches : prise en compte dans les actions sylvicoles du carbone, de l'eau, de la biodiversité, des paysages ou encore des besoins économiques de la filière locale. La dernière journée était consacrée à la présentation des outils et des financements européens ainsi que les politiques publiques menées en France en faveur de la biodiversité. Les participants ont souligné que les actions pionnières menées sur le terrain nécessitent une animation importante et demande des moyens. Dans ce domaine, les Régions apparaissent comme les pilotes des futures politiques publiques de la biodiversité en cohérence attendue avec la politique nationale. Michaël Weber, vice-président de la Fédération des Parcs Naturels Régionaux et président de l'association des Communes forestières de Moselle, a ajouté que "les communes forestières, en tant que propriétaires de forêts et acteur indispensable des territoires, étaient au carrefour de ces préoccupations et force de concertation"

    YesMycobacterium africanum lineage (L) 6 is an important pathogen in West Africa, causing up to 40% of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). The biology underlying the clinical differences between M. africanum and M. tuberculosis sensu stricto remains poorly understood. We performed ex vivo expression of 2179 genes of the most geographically dispersed cause of human TB, M. tuberculosis L4 and the geographically restricted, M. africanum L6 directly from sputa of 11 HIV-negative TB patients from The Gambia who had not started treatment. The DosR regulon was the most significantly decreased category in L6 relative to L4. Further, we identified nonsynonymous mutations in major DosR regulon genes of 44 L6 genomes of TB patients from The Gambia and Ghana. Using Lebek's test, we assessed differences in oxygen requirements for growth. L4 grew only at the aerobic surface while L6 grew throughout the medium. In the host, the DosR regulon is critical for M. tuberculosis in adaptation to oxygen limitation. However, M. africanum L6 appears to have adapted to growth under hypoxic conditions or to different biological niches. The observed under expression of DosR in L6 fits with the genomic changes in DosR genes, microaerobic growth and the association with extrapulmonary disease.European Research Council-INTERRUPTB starting grant nr.311725 (to BdJ, BO, FG, MA, CM)

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe
