    Get PDF
The Indian Pharmaceutical Industry incurs almost one third of its total cost from supply chain management systems. The SCM costs are relatively higher in India than other countries of the world amounting to 13 % of India’s GDP (Adhikari & Bora ,2014). For having an effective supply chain management system, it is required to have procurement of raw materials, raw materials turned into finished good and then further moved out in market for distribution. The major aspect in relation to SCM is the lack of knowledge on the various SCM related issues and strategies, most of the industries spend a lot of amount on the SCM issues and high resentment is on one specific problem i.e. of reduction in operational cost. However, the effectiveness also depends on SCM to be indispensable in maintaining expenses and seek ways to reduce cost thereby increasing the sales of the company. The purpose of the study is to explore various strategies and best practices involved which are used by the Indian business leaders of Pharma industries and finding out ways to maximize sourcing, distribution, inventory and its management. The methodology used is a single case study on various aspects with the semi- structured interview to collect data. The research design used on data sources identified were: observations, semi-structured Interview and documents of the industry. For the Identification of the challenges and their solutions in SCM strategies the proposed theory of Goldratt’s (1990), Theory of constraints was used as conceptual framework. The results of the study is a significant contribution to the business practices in the industries, increase in supply chain effectiveness, their strength and weakness, reducing organizational operational cost and socially finding the reputation of industries in ensuring the on time availability of their medicines in market. The study also relates, aims in identifying and implementing the best practices in various processes of Supply chain management by facilitating the increased availability, distribution of medicine, profitability and reduced operation cost

When risks need attention: adoption of green supply chain initiatives in the pharmaceutical industry

    Get PDF
The pharmaceutical industry is very important in delivering life-saving products/services to society. There are many ways for materials/products/services concerned with pharmaceuticals to influence the environment; these include improper disposal of pills/tablets by patients, expired and unused medications, improper release of drugs by pharmacies or household sewage mixed with surplus drugs. In view of this, the present work seeks to integrate green supply chain (GSC) concepts in the pharmaceutical sector in a developing economy Indian context. In so doing, managers need to determine the potential risks in adopting GSC initiatives to achieve sustainability in operational perspectives. In this sense, this work seeks to distinguish the potential risks in adopting GSC initiatives within the pharmaceutical industry. This work uses a literature review and fuzzy Delphi approach in finalising the risks. This research also uses fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) for prioritisation of the risks under vague and unclear surroundings. According to the findings, cold chain technology and supply risks categories are highly prioritised. This work can assist practising managers and government authorities in effectively developing and managing GSC initiatives in line with sustainable development goals in the context of the pharmaceutical industry. Finally, a sensitivity test is applied to evaluate the stability of ranking of risks.N/

Pricing and sourcing strategies for competing retailers in supply chains under disruption risk

    No full text
Supply disruption has become a critical concern for businesses around the world. The extant literature has dealt mainly with the sourcing decision for a price-taking retailer. In this paper, we study how a retailer can use pricing decisions along with sourcing strategies under disruption risk while competing against another retailer with a more reliable supply chain. The retailer uses two decision levers namely, price adjustment, and split of order between reliable but expensive supplier and/or cheap but unreliable supplier to compete in the end market. Our analyses show that the competitive dynamics is shaped by the cost structure of the players, relative market potential and disruption risk. We find that the retailer focuses on reliable supplies with less price adjustment when it enjoys procurement cost advantage and higher market potential. On the other hand, as the procurement cost advantage and market potential shifts to the competitor; the retailer opts for cheaper but risky supplies and relies on drastic price adjustments. These results have important managerial implications and provide critical guidelines for retailers involved in pricing and sourcing decisions under the threat of supply disruptions. © 2017 Elsevier B.V

The thesis purpose is to determine the best supplier of organic chickpea beans among a number of potential qualified suppliers. Since the author and her friends are planning to open a small coffee shop serving organic falafel as the shop’s signature dish with healthy organic chickpeas, the best supplier of such beans is key in this business. This is also the rea-son why the topic was chosen and analyzed. A framework dealing with the purchasing function and supplier evaluation and selection process was applied for a discussion and in-depth analysis to figure out sourcing strategies and supplier selection criteria which support the final decision. Additionally, qualitative research via interview tools was carried out to assist in collecting valuable information and data and to analyze it precisely. The collected data was investigated thoroughly and ana-lyzed in terms of the assessment criteria and, in the end, the most qualified supplier was determined logically and convincingly. In conclusion, Taj Mehal Afro-Asian Market was on the top of the best suppliers who met all requirements of the coffee shop and offered the most competitive bean prices. However, a long further process of contracting, ordering and assessment needs to be completed later in order to support this start-up successfully

Manufacturing firms are confronted with the challenge to respond to uniqueness of customer demands, uncertain market environment and performance improvement. This study therefore, aimed to provide an integrated strategic model to manufacturing firms to overcome these challenges. The framework was comprised of sourcing strategy, competitive strategy, strategic flexibility, strategic capability and sourcing relationship quality to enhance the firm 's performance. To achieve this, a quantitative research approach was used to collect primary data and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to analyze the hypothesized effects. Data were collected from manufacturing firm situated in Bangladesh. This study found positive direct effect of exogenous variable; cost-leadership strategy, related product diversification, manufacturing capability and purchasing capability on firm performance and sourcing strategy. Differentiation strategy and unrelated product diversification have not direct effect on manufacturing firm's performance. In addition, sourcing strategy effect on firm performance was positive. Significant positive mediating effect of sourcing strategy was reported in between exogenous variables and firm performance. Moderating effect of sourcing relationship quality was found significant. Sourcing relationship quality therefore, strengthen the relationship of sourcing strategy and firm performance. Empirical evidence of proposed integrated framework was established, and this will help manufacturing firms to improve performance. Manufacturing firms can consider the strategic fit of the study variables and outcome which might help for appropriate decision making and remain competitive. This study also shed light on strategic management literature by approaching moderated mediation model

    Get PDF
Balancing sustainability and disruption of supply chains requires organizational ambidexterity. Sustainable supply chains prioritize efficiency and economies of scale and may not have sufficient redundancy to withstand disruptive events. There is a developing body of literature that attempts to reconcile these two aspects. This study gives a data-driven literature review of sustainable supply chain management trends toward ambidexterity and disruption. The critical review reveals temporal trends and geographic distribution of literature. A hybrid of data-driven analysis approach based on content and bibliometric analyses, fuzzy Delphi method, entropy weight method, and fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory is used on 273 keywords and 22 indicators obtained based on the experts’ evaluation. The most important indicators are identified as supply chain agility, supply chain coordination, supply chain finance, supply chain flexibility, supply chain resilience, and sustainability. The regions show different tendencies compared with others. Asia and Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa are the regions needs improvement, while Europe and North America show distinct apprehensions on supply chain network design. The main contribution of this review is the identification of the knowledge frontier, which then leads to a discussion of prospects for future studies and practical industry implementation
