From Memphis to Kingston: An Investigation into the Origin of Jamaican Ska

The distinguishing characteristic of most Jamaican popular music recordings, including reggae and its predecessor, ska, is an emphasis on the offbeat or afterbeat instead of on the downbeat, as found in most US pop music. A study is presented that critically examines proposed theories to explain this tendency through historical and musicological analysis and concludes that the prevalence of the downbeat is a mixture of Jamaican folk and African-American pop music influences in its earliest incarnation but was later deliberately emphasized in an attempt to create a unique new musical style

The Sound of the Suburbs: A Case Study of Three Garage Bands in San Jose, California during the 1960s

The Chocolate Watchband, the Count Five, and the Syndicate of Sound were three garage bands from San Jose, California. During the 1960s, before the high‐tech economy transformed the Santa Clara Valley into Silicon Valley, San Jose was a culturally sleepy suburb. This paper will examine these three groups in the context of 1960s culture and society and will compare and contrast their image and musical output with that of the better‐known “hippie” music scene originating an hour north in San Francisco

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose, California is a unique dual-use library serving the students of San Jose State University and the community of San Jose, California. The reference collections of the two libraries are merged and interfiled to promote ease of access for both populations served. Economies of scale were realized through collaborative collection development activities for major reference purchases between the two institutions. This article describes the planning and creation of the King Library\u27s merged reference collection and reviews the literature of collaborative collection development and merged or interfiled collections

Valokuvien ja videoiden käsittelyn koulutus : forensisten valokuvien ja videoiden käsittelyn kouluttaminen poliisi (AMK) -tutkinnossa

Valokuvien ja videoiden käsittelyn osaaminen on tärkeä osa poliisin työtä. Nykypäivänä poliisi kuvaa päivittäin erilaisilla rikos- ja onnettomuuspaikoilla, usein melko haastavissa olosuhteissa. Olosuhteista johtuen kuvat eivät välttämättä aina onnistu täydellisesti vaan vaativat muokkaamista, jotta oleellinen informaatio saadaan esiin. Poliisien peruskoulutuksessa kuvan- ja videonkäsittely on melko pienessä roolissa, johtuen koulutuksen laaja-alaisuudesta. Valokuvien käsittely on kuitenkin taito, joka tulisi nykypäivänä jokaisen konstaapelin hallita, riippumatta siitä työskenteleekö hän kentällä vai tutkinnassa. Samoin jokaisella konstaapelilla tulisi olla perustietämys valvontavideoiden tutkinnasta. Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli kartoittaa kyselytutkimuksella valmistumisen kynnyksellä olevien poliisiopiskelijoiden tarpeet digitaalisten valokuvien ja valvontavideoiden käsittelystä ja tutkinnasta. Tarkoitus oli selvittää, mitä taitoja he tarvitsevat työssään ja suunnitella vapaasti valittava opintojakso osaksi poliisien perustutkintoa. Opintojakson tavoitteena on kouluttaa poliiseille perusasiat digitaalisten valokuvien ja valvontavideoiden käsittelystä ja tutkinnasta. Toteutunut opintojakso pilotoitiin ja opiskelijoilta kerättiin palautetta. Palautteen perusteella opintojaksoon tehtiin pieniä korjauksia. Tehtävänantoja selkeytettiin erityisesti palautettavien kuvien osalta, minkä lisäksi tehtävänannon yhteyteen tehtiin yksi ohjevideo. Kritiikkiä aiheuttanutta Moodlen oppitunti-moduulin käyttämistä teoriaosuudessa ei kuitenkaan kyetty korjaamaan tämän opinnäytetyön puitteissa
