The purpose of the paper is to analyze how West describes the East and how the East looks at the West. The conflicts, the settings, and the characters in the novel are also shown in order to supporting the orientalism. It also discusses how the orientalism works in this novel and how the relation between the occident or the west and the orient or the east. In doing this research, the writer uses method of library research. The object of the paper is William Somerset Maugham's The painted Veil. The writer also uses postcolonial approach to help explain the issues in The Painted Veil. To investigate the issues, the writer uses orientalism theory by Edward Said. From the discussion in the paper the writer finds that there are some parts that show the British view towards Chinese. The orientalism in this novel is also shown in some parts such as the policy of British in China, the purpose of conquering China, and in comparison of The West religion and The East Religion

Entoparasites Encountered in Some Fruit Trees (Region of South Albania)

The following work deals with the problems of infections of a variety of fruit trees plants met in the Southern Region of Albania. In the analysis one of the most specific groups of plant-entomologists has been obtained, that of the U / Order Coccidia Class Insecta. These insects represent a specific set of pests that feed on plant lymphoma through a highly developed oral drip type suppressor. In this way they not only mechanically damage the plant but also convey it to many viral illnesses in the lymph, leading it to complete degradation. They are so closely related to the plant that, most of them, even wintering (one of the most delicate periods for plant survival itself) passes like parasites on them. Through this work, it is shown which of these entomophytes have met in this plant group in the region concerned? Which of the plant species analyzed is found most frequented by this group of pests and what is the spread of this contamination in both variety and percentage; also by analyzing the distribution of plant species encountered, at different altitudes over sea level? The paper contains, figuratively, a series of morpho-determining features of the representatives cited in this paper.Given that this plant group is one of the main sources of vitamins for vegetarian foods for mankind, this work itself takes on importance and practical value

Using simulation gaming to validate a mathematical modeling platform for resource allocation in disasters

The extraordinary conditions of a disaster require the mobilisation of all available resources, inducing the rush of humanitarian partners into the affected area This phenomenon called the proliferation of actors, causes serious problems during the disaster response phase including the oversupply, duplicated efforts, lack of planning In an attempt to reduce the partner proliferation problem a framework called PREDIS (PREdictive model for DISaster response partner selection) is put forward to configure the humanitarian network within early hours after disaster strike when the information is scarce To verify this model a simulation game is designed using two sets of real decision makers (experts and non-experts) in the disaster Haiyan scenario The result shows that using the PREDIS framework 100% of the experts could make the same decisions less than six hours comparing to 72 hours Also between 71% and 86% of the times experts and non-experts decide similarly using the PREDIS framewor

Spatio-Temporal Facial Expression Recognition Using Convolutional Neural Networks and Conditional Random Fields

Automated Facial Expression Recognition (FER) has been a challenging task for decades. Many of the existing works use hand-crafted features such as LBP, HOG, LPQ, and Histogram of Optical Flow (HOF) combined with classifiers such as Support Vector Machines for expression recognition. These methods often require rigorous hyperparameter tuning to achieve good results. Recently Deep Neural Networks (DNN) have shown to outperform traditional methods in visual object recognition. In this paper, we propose a two-part network consisting of a DNN-based architecture followed by a Conditional Random Field (CRF) module for facial expression recognition in videos. The first part captures the spatial relation within facial images using convolutional layers followed by three Inception-ResNet modules and two fully-connected layers. To capture the temporal relation between the image frames, we use linear chain CRF in the second part of our network. We evaluate our proposed network on three publicly available databases, viz. CK+, MMI, and FERA. Experiments are performed in subject-independent and cross-database manners. Our experimental results show that cascading the deep network architecture with the CRF module considerably increases the recognition of facial expressions in videos and in particular it outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in the cross-database experiments and yields comparable results in the subject-independent experiments.Comment: To appear in 12th IEEE Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition Worksho

Introduction: Impulsivity is one of the main cores of bipolar disorder and the maintenance factor of depressive symptoms in patients with major depressive disorder. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the acceptance and commitment therapy in impulsivity of patients with bipolar I disorder and major depression disorder.Method: The study design was quasi-experimental. The study population included all patients with bipolar I disorder and major depression disorder that have been referred to the public and private treatment centers of Zanjan; among those, 12 patients with bipolar I disorder and 12 patients with major depression disorder were selected based on psychiatric diagnosis and on the criteria of DSM-IV. Also by Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) and according to the inclusion criteria and convenient sampling, all patients received 8 sessions of 90 minutes treatment based on acceptance and commitment therapy. All Patients were assessed three times (before treatment, mid-treatment and end of treatment) using the Impulsivity Questionnaire (Barrat et al, 1977). Data were analyzed by ANOVA with repeated measure test. Results: The results of data analysis indicated the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy in decreasing impulsivity (F (66, 3) =115/7; P<0/001, ETA=0/84) and the components of attention/cognitive impulsivity (p<0/001), motor impulsivity (p<0/001), and non-planning (p<0/001) in both groups of patients with bipolar disorder-I and major depression disorder. Conclusion: Acceptance and commitment therapy decreases the impulsivity of patients with bipolar disorder and major depression disorder by increasing awareness, psychological acceptance, emotional isolation, management of emotions, reducing ineffective control and use of problem-solving

ABSTRACTEfforts to protect child labor rights have existed for a long time, both in the form of legislation and in their implementation. However, these efforts have not shown adequate results in accordance with the needs and development of social communities. The role of government and society as well as social organizations that are still lacking in fulfilling the rights of a child, especially in child labor who are still vulnerable to human rights violations, must be seriously considered. The problem of human rights violations in the industrial sector is currently rife in Indonesia related to poverty and underdevelopment. This writing is motivated by the existence of problems, namely, the form of protection of human rights for child labor in a positive legal perspective and the government's efforts to prevent child labor. This research is a type of normative juridical research, using a statutory approach, and a conceptual approach. Sources of legal materials, namely, primary legal materials, secondary legal materials, and tertiary legal materials. Get PDF
Increased care, implementation, and greater importance in creating fiscal policies that impact in the economy and family consumption began after the declaration of Independence in 2008, when the first tax reforms were made. But the fiscal reforms called the Fiscal Package 1 which started its enforcement by the end of 2015, especially the VAT reduced rate for household consumption from 16% to 8% had the main effect on the consumer basket and the family budget, which is also the main approach of this paper. Based on the analysis of many indicators, statistical data and questionnaire we have verified how much was impact in the household budget by the decrease of VAT rate. We will give an overview on the influence of this reform on the household consumption basket by focusing mainly on essential products for living. By comparing the experiences of the countries in the region and the survey with the respondents we will be able to see how these changes were expected by the citizens, how do they evaluate the impact on their family budget, as well as possible suggestions for other positive ways that can contribute in saving the family budget. Hypothesis from the comparison of the results of the findings and the answers from the survey was verified that family consumption basket with VAT reduction has lower cost especially for public services and saving the family budget. While the implication on the general budget of the state from reduced VAT rate is very small, compared to the benefits of low-income households
