    Swimming against the tide in STEM education and gender equality: a problem of recruitment or retention in Malaysia

    Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is acknowledged as one of the key drivers of technological innovation. Malaysian women join the educational pipeline as equals to their male counterparts. Nevertheless, women are persistently under-represented in technology and engineering, but over-represented in other STEM fields. Using data provided by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education, our results suggest that under-representation of women in engineering was attributed to low recruitment at the point of entry. Such a finding thus begs the question as to why women were not recruited into engineering. Malaysian policymakers and educators need to address under-representation of women in order to achieve gender equality in STEM, as part of the goals of Millennium Development and Vision 2020; to become a nation that is competent, confident and innovative in harnessing and advancing science and technology

    Sustainable supply chain management towards disruption and organizational ambidexterity:A data driven analysis

    Balancing sustainability and disruption of supply chains requires organizational ambidexterity. Sustainable supply chains prioritize efficiency and economies of scale and may not have sufficient redundancy to withstand disruptive events. There is a developing body of literature that attempts to reconcile these two aspects. This study gives a data-driven literature review of sustainable supply chain management trends toward ambidexterity and disruption. The critical review reveals temporal trends and geographic distribution of literature. A hybrid of data-driven analysis approach based on content and bibliometric analyses, fuzzy Delphi method, entropy weight method, and fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory is used on 273 keywords and 22 indicators obtained based on the experts’ evaluation. The most important indicators are identified as supply chain agility, supply chain coordination, supply chain finance, supply chain flexibility, supply chain resilience, and sustainability. The regions show different tendencies compared with others. Asia and Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa are the regions needs improvement, while Europe and North America show distinct apprehensions on supply chain network design. The main contribution of this review is the identification of the knowledge frontier, which then leads to a discussion of prospects for future studies and practical industry implementation

    Gender and sexuality are central aspects of human identity, and play an essential role in every aspect of people’s lives. Perceptions of gender and sexuality strongly affect the health status and general wellbeing of individuals. Although the importance of gender and sexuality has been widely discussed in the health literature, little is known about the meanings that people give to these concepts at different social classes and life stages. Young adulthood is a distinct period of development “characterized by identity explorations.” The concepts of gender and sexuality are two important areas of identity exploration that influence the young adults’ identity stabilization and leading them to embrace the adult roles. In addition, young adults who pursue higher education and delay in marriage, experience a prolonged transition to adulthood due to social and economic changes that might result in different issues and challenges with regard to the concepts of gender and sexuality. The international contexts of universities in Malaysia provided opportunities for intermingling of different cultures and citizens that might result in new experiences and challenges. Iranian students form the highest number of university students in Malaysia. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experiences and perceptions of gender and sexuality among young adult Malaysian and Iranian university students in Malaysia in order to capture the common experiences, and joint issues and challenges among this diverse group. I adopted a Transcendental Phenomenology to explore the lived experiences of gender and sexuality among the heterosexual male and female young adults (20-30 years old) involving 22 Malaysian and Iranian university students. The Transcendental phenomenology methodology led to illustration of the essence of the experience common to the whole group. iv Findings illustrated the stereotypical and androcentric views of gender and sexuality. Concept of gender was associated with physical appearance, gender behaviors, gender roles, social positions and sexual abilities. Concept of sexuality was perceived in relation to pleasure and physical enjoyment, emotional attachment, trust and commitment, responsibility, and women’s dignity and social honor. Perceptions of gender and sexuality was affected by different factors in the social and environmental structures. The university context led to the experience of positive perceptions of gender, and was understood as an influential factor in achieving gender equality. In addition, the international context of the universities provided opportunities for the development of trans-national non-committal sexual relationships. The participants faced several issues and challenges in experiencing their gender and sexuality, and expressed their needs for knowledge, and suggested some areas of education to stakeholders. The substantive theoretical model emerged from this research provides a framework for the understanding of the lived experiences and faced issues of gender and sexuality among this diverse group of young adults. The model can draw on a practical framework for empowerment of university students to meet the issues of gender and sexuality in a healthier way. The study confirmed the quest for a comprehensive sexuality education at university level as well as educational programs for improving personal growth and interpersonal relationship skills, and counseling services for enhancing academic achievements and decision-making skills for future social life

    A new robust possibilistic programming model for reliable supply chain network design: A case study of lead-acid battery supply chain

    Nowadays, the importance of caring about tremendous undesirable economical and technological effects of disruptions has impelled many researchers to design reliable supply chain networks. Moreover, the issue of intrinsic imprecision of input parameters should be gingerly regarded in the design of supply chain networks because it could have inverse impact on the quality of long-term planning decisions. Consequently, to handle the noted problems, in this paper, a reliable closed-loop supply chain network is formulated in which a new reliability method is introduced. The proposed formulation can effectively enable the design of a reliable network under different kinds of disruptions besides seeking for minimum overall costs of network design. On the one hand, a new effectual robust possibilistic programming (RPP) model is developed to confront with business-as-usual uncertainty in input parameters. Lastly, a real industrial case study is employed to validate the utility and practicability of the rendered model as well as presenting the efficiency and felicity of the developed RPP model

    Concerns about the outbreak of perturbations and their major losses have led a lot of researchers to consider reliability while designing supply chain networks. In addition, the inherent uncertainty of input parameters is another important issue in the design of supply chain networks due to its adverse effects on strategic, tactical, and operational decisions. This present paper proposes a new model for designing a sustainable closed-loop single-product multi-component multi-level logistics network under uncertainty conditions. The model is based on a robust possibilistic programming approach. The proposed models not only minimize the total costs but also develop an effective resistant network under disruptions strikes and control the product delivery speed at appropriate safety levels. Finally, the effectiveness and applicability of the model are displayed in a national project with the actual nominal data

    A robust possibilistic programming model for water allocation problem

    Over the past few years, water allocation problem has increasingly spotlighted by governments, researchers and practitioners. As water plays an important role in people’s life and business environment, the problem of water allocation should be considered carefully to properly satisfy demand of water consumers. In the real world applications, problems like water allocation are uncertain owing to long-term planning horizon of such problems. Therefore, employing efficient methods for tackling uncertainty of parameters should be regarded by field researchers. In this regard, this paper proposes a bi-objective mathematical programming model for water distribution network design. The extended model maximizes total profit of water distribution as well as maximizing priority of water transferring among water customer zones. Then, to cope effectively with uncertainty of parameters, a novel robust possibilistic programming method is applied. Then, fuzzy and robust fuzzy programming models are compared against each other and output results confirm superiority and effective performance of the robust fuzzy model in the water allocation problem. Also, output results of the extended model show its accurate performance that results in applicability of the model as a strong planning tool in real world cases

    Diagnostic challenges of lung biopsies in setting of metastatic female genital tract tumors; report of 2 cases

    Introduction: Lungs are one of the most common sites for metastatic tumors in the body. In addition, primary lung tumors are the most common cause of death due to neoplasms in both genders. Treatment strategies are completely different for primary and metastatic lung tumors making accurate diagnosis of lung tumors an effective factor in planning the correct treatment. The development of personalized medicine and targeted therapy, especially in the treatment of primary lung tumors, has highlighted the importance of correct diagnosis of these tumors. Case report: The Pathology Center of Imam Khomeini Hospital Cancer Institute in Tehran, Iran, as a referral center for cancer across the country, is faced with a large number of lung biopsies, and therefore, there will be numerous diagnostic challenges. In this article, we presented two cases of primary female genital tract (cervical) tumors that during follow up lung masses were detected. Diagnosis on lung biopsy assigned as primary lung adenocarcinoma. Both cases referred to our lab for second opinion accompanied with related resected sample and implementation of further supplementary markers documented metastatic origin of tumors. Discussion & conclusion: In both cases, similarity in immunohistochemical characteristics of metastatic tumors with primary lung adenocarcinoma, especially positive nuclear TTF1 staining led to misdiagnosis of lung tumor origin. This finding emphasizes on the use of other specific markers related to primary site of tumor to decrease possibility of incorrect diagnosis of the origin of the tumor in metastatic setting. Due to remarkable influence of primary versus metastatic origin of lung tumor on selection of treatment, pathologists should be considered correct diagnosis and notice to similarity of immunohistochemical markers of primary lung tumors to other organs and implementation of more specific markers are necessary
