The first Rebel Homecoming Festival was started to celebrate homecoming week. It was on Thursday right before the big game. The purposeof the festival was to bring all colleges together to celebrate UNLV as a whole. Girls on the Run is an non-profit program that strives to teach young women self-love and how to live a healthy life. They do this by running an afterschool program that focus on education and self-esteem building. At the end of the year the girls run a celebratory 5K run. The Boys and Girls Clubs is organization that offers a variety of afterschool programs and activities. The main purpose of the program is to provide a safe place for children to go and stay off the streets.https://digitalscholarship.unlv.edu/educ_sys_202/1080/thumbnail.jp

    Non-thermal WIMPs as Dark Radiation

It has been thought that only light species could behave as radiation and account for the dark radiation observed recently by Planck, WMAP9, South Pole and ATACAMA telescopes. In this work we will show that GeV scale WIMPs can plausibly account for the dark radiation as well. Heavy WIMPs might mimic the effect of a half neutrino species if some of their fraction were produced non-thermally after the thermal freeze-out. In addition, we will show how BBN, CMB and Structure Formation bounds might be circumvented.Comment: 8 Pages, 2 Figures. Published in the PPC proceedings 201

Dark Matter Overview: Collider, Direct and Indirect Detection Searches

The complementarity of direct, indirect and collider searches for dark matter has improved our understanding concerning the properties of the dark matter particle. I will review the basic concepts that these methods rely upon and highlight what are the most important information they provide when it comes down to interpret the results in terms of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). Later, I go over some of the latest results emphasizing the implications to dark matter theory in a broad sense and point out recent developments and prospects in the field.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Based on the invited talk "Dark Matter Overview" given at Moriond 2016. Many thanks to the organizers for putting together great physicists in a lovely environment

Semiosis and pragmatism: toward a dynamic concept of meaning

    Get PDF
Philosophers and social scientists of diverse orientations have suggested that the pragmatics of semiosis is germane to a dynamic account of meaning as process. Semiosis, the central focus of C. S. Peirce's pragmatic philosophy, may hold a key to perennial problems regarding meaning. Indeed, Peirce's thought should be deemed seminal when placed within the cognitive sciences, especially with respect to his concept of the sign. According to Peirce's pragmatic model, semiosis is a triadic, time-bound, context-sensitive, interpreter-dependent, materially extended dynamic process. Semiosis involves inter-relatedness and inter-action between signs, their objects, acts and events in the world, and the semiotic agents who are in the process of making and taking them

Synthetic Semiotics: on modelling and simulating the \ud emergence of sign processes

    Get PDF
Based on formal-theoretical principles about the \ud sign processes involved, we have built synthetic experiments \ud to investigate the emergence of communication based on \ud symbols and indexes in a distributed system of sign users, \ud following theoretical constraints from C.S.Peirce theory of \ud signs, following a Synthetic Semiotics approach. In this paper, we summarize these computational experiments and results regarding associative learning processes of symbolic sign modality and cognitive conditions in an evolutionary process for the emergence of either symbol-based or index-based communication
