    Epilepsy and GI Disorders

    Get PDF
The gastrointestinal system communicates with the brain by way of vagus nerve fibers and the gut-brain axis. There is a well-known relationship between autoimmune diseases and epileptogenesis, and this may explain the involvement of gut microbiota in the course of epilepsy. Many seizures which are described, depending the severity and/or duration, as benign or epilepsy may be related and based on gastrointestinal origin. Epilepsy and related neurological symptoms may alert the clinician to additional life-threatening conditions and complications during the course of gastrointestinal system-based chronic disease such as inflammatory bowel disease and celiac disease. Since the gut is the only part of inner body exposed to environment, novel therapeutic options that target gut microbiata may be promising in many diseases including epilepsy

    Breast Cancer and Exercise

    Get PDF
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer and the leading cause of death in women. Chemotherapy drugs, which are used to suppress growth and proliferation of cancer cells, prevent or minimize treatment-related symptoms, and improve the quality of life, lead to the destruction of normal cells with therapeutic effects as well as toxic effects. In response, symptoms such as pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, anorexia, anxiety, and depression occur in patients. Chemotherapy and its side effects adversely affect the physical and functional capacity of patients with cancer. In particular, the decrease in aerobic capacity affects muscle strength, endurance body awareness, and the quality of life. The practice of aerobic exercise programs during the treatment of breast cancer is important for reducing the side effects, improving physiological health, improving physical functions, preventing weight gain, and maintaining muscle strength. When the rehabilitation programs for breast cancer are individualized, become specific, and realistic goals are set, the positive effects of exercise can be seen

Student opinions are important to improve the physiotherapy and rehabilitation curriculum, and to maintain the quality of education. This study aimed to evaluate the students' perception levels related to anatomy education in terms of electrotherapy lectures. Third and fourth-year physiotherapy students (61 female, 43 male) have voluntarily participated in this study. The data were obtained by a survey, which consists of 29 closed-ended (15 Likert-type questions) questions. The average age was 21.82 +/- 1.62 years. The grade point average of the participants, which is based on the 4-point scale, is 2.33 +/- 0.44 points. There was no difference between the genders in terms of the grade point averages (p = 0.78). Students stated that the anatomy knowledge of the musculoskeletal system is extremely important in terms of electrotherapy lectures. This is followed by the nervous system and the circulatory system, respectively. They also stated that they need more anatomy knowledge during motor point stimulation applications (50%), and less anatomy knowledge during ultrasound applications (15.38%). In the results of Likert-type survey, first and second highest scores were pertained to "I need anatomy knowledge when inserting electrodes" and "The knowledge which is obtained from anatomy lectures affect to the motor nerve stimulations" (1.42 +/- 0.67 and 1.40 +/- 0.66, respectively, p < 0.05) and the least score was pertained to "I need to look at my anatomy notes before the electrotherapy exams" (0.41 +/- 0.88, p < 0.05). The results from this

Prediction of Nonlinear Drift Demands for Buildings with Recurrent Neural Networks

Application of deep learning algorithms to the problems of structural engineering is an emerging research field. Inthis study, a deep learning algorithm, namely recurrent neural network (RNN), is applied to tackle a problemrelated to the assessment of reinforced concrete buildings. Inter-storey drift ratio profile of a structure is a quiteimportant parameter while conducting assessment procedures. In general, procedures require a series of timeconsuming nonlinear dynamic analysis. In this study, an extensive RNN is trained to tackle these problems andprovide a simple tool for assessment. Aim of the study is to predict the non-linear drift demand along the heightof a structure by employing RNN for a given stiffness profile along the height, strength reduction coefficient, massdensity on a floor, number of storeys. In order to train the network, a large number of nonlinear time historyanalyses are conducted for synthetically created building models. It is shown that RNN is able to accurately predictnonlinear drift demand profile of a structure along height without conducting tedious time history analyses. Therefore, the trained RNN can serve as a drift demand estimation tool, significantly shortening the assessmentprocedure

Introduction. The study purpose was to investigate the effects of electrical stimulation therapy (EST) and to examine whether the patients' awareness of and satisfaction with EST changed with gender, education level, information on treatment, and number of sessions. Methods. The Electrotherapy Questionnaire, prepared by the researchers, consisting of 20 closed-ended questions, was applied to the participants. A total of 531 volunteers who had completed the physiotherapy program and received EST treatment were included in the study. Pearson's correlations were used to assess the associations between satisfaction and awareness and gender, education level, number of treatment sessions, and information on treatment. Results. The mean age of the patients was 45.4 ± 5.1 years. Overall, 57% of the participants stated that they did not know the purpose of EST; 77% were satisfied with EST; 47.5% maintained that the transmission gel used during EST applications had a healing effect. A significant positive correlation was found only between increasing physiotherapists' explanations and patients' satisfaction (r = 0.166, p < 0.05). Conclusions. Patients' expectation bound with the treatment and their desire to be informed were found to be high. The proportion of those who benefited from EST turned out high. It was shown that patients' awareness of EST and their perceived wellness were improved by informing the patients about the purpose of the treatment. © University School of Physical Education in Wroclaw

Hemlock (Conium Maculatum) Poisoning In A Child

    Get PDF
SUMMARYPoison hemlock (Conium maculatum) is a plant that is poisonous for humans and animals. Accidental ingestion of the plant may result in central nervous system depression, respiratory failure, acute rhabdomyolysis, acute renal failure and even death. The main treatment of hemlock poisoning is supportive care. The case of a 6-year-old girl who was admitted to the emergency department with complaints of burning sensation in mouth, hypersalivation, tremor in hands and ataxia after ingestion of poison hemlock is presented here with clinical and laboratory features. In this case, we aim to report that accidental ingestion of plants resembling vegetables that are consumed daily can lead to serious complications and even death

In this thesis, usage of some well-known chaos control methods with artificial intelligence techniques is proposed for the control of chaotic systems. Sliding mode control method, artificial neural networks and using both of them are applied for the control of Chua's circuit, the passive control method, fuzzy logic and using both of them are applied for the control of Bonhoeffer–van der Pol circuit, and the feedback control method, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system and using both of them are applied for the control of Colpitts circuit. The results are presented by comparative figures. They show that the proposed approach provides the control of chaotic systems to their equilibrium points more effectively

On Strategies Improving Accuracy of Speed Prediction from Floating Car Data (FCD)

    Get PDF
For smart mobility, speed data extracted from Floating Car Data (FCD) plays an important role in speed predictionaccuracy. However, there are reliability issues for commercial FCD due to processing of individual vehicletracking data, and imposed temporal averaging to compress data size. Furthermore, spatial discretizationsignificantly affects the accuracy of the prediction due to uneven segment lengths and highly variable dataavailability in the network. In this study, these issues are examined in detail, and several strategies to improveaverage speed prediction are proposed. An extensive FCD data from a 75-km long corridor is utilized in thecalculations. Firstly, for data reliability, several filters are applied to clean data, then, a robust algorithm is appliedto smoothen the speed data. Secondly, to investigate and reduce prediction errors due to spatial segmentation, anumber of segmentation approaches are developed, and their effects on the average speed prediction are assessed. Finally, several autoregressive prediction models are implemented and a comprehensive comparison of results ispresented
