The main aim of this study was to analyse and document the value of smallholder farmers’ use of Draught Animal Power (DAP) systems in the Eastern Caprivi Region and to test the economic viability of DAP usage versus using tractors. This study applied Rapid Rural Appraisal techniques (RRA), including a survey. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 312 farmers at their farms and data was gathered on the use of and economics related to the draught animal power system. Crop enterprise budgets, project reports, expert opinions and group discussions were analysed. The research found that the use of animal power performs better in terms of physical productivity per ha compared to tractor usage. Furthermore, agricultural production in Sibinda village area, with the use of oxen outperformed the other systems when it was evaluated with parametric analysis. From a financial perspective, faremrs in Sibinda and Linyanti using oxen ranked above their counterparts using tractors. Further, the exercise indicated that farmers are facing a multitude of challenges such as damage incurred from wild animals and high input costs. There were many difficulties facing the next generation in entering commericial agricultural production in Caprivi within the current cost-price squeeze environment. Therefore, understanding the role draught oxen power can play as a tool to increase the level of success for new farmers’ in agricultural production and management was noted

A METHOD FOR SEMANTIC WEB SERVICE COMPOSITION BASED ON PATTERN MATCHING

    Get PDF
The composition of semantic web services is a very important and actual problem in the semantic web services research area. There are several semi-automatic approaches for this problem, but most of the results are related to automatic approaches. In this paper we present an automatic approach for the composition of semantic web services based on pattern matching. We consider a special type of semantic description, represented as a list of semantic descriptions corresponding to several semantic web services. The semantic description related to the semantic web service that we want to obtain is decomposed until all the parts of the semantic description correspond to semantic web services from a library. In the end, all the necessary semantic web services found in the library are composed in order to obtain the semantic web service that we wanted to construct.semantic web service composition, semantic description decomposition, pattern matching

Revitalizing Intellectual Property Right Protection for Traditional Knowledge and Cultural Expression in Ethiopia: A Lesson from Kenya

    Get PDF
Ethiopia, being a country with multi-ethnic population is endowed withplenty of traditional knowledge (TK) and traditional cultural expressions(TCE). Nevertheless, the arrival of globalization has created fertile groundfor commercial exploitation and distortion of the TK and TCE of the countryby alien without any economic or moral incentive to their custodians orpreservers. Recently, efforts are being made to adopt sui-generis form ofintellectual property (IP) law to preserve, protect, and promote TK and TCEat international, regional and national levels yet Ethiopia has no effective IPlaw on TK and TCE. Hence, inspired by the inadequacy of the existingEthiopian IP laws in protecting, promoting, and commercializing TK andTCE, this article proposes key forward to revitalize legal protection of TKand TCE in the country. To this end, it utilized doctrinal and comparativeresearch that drawn lesson from a revolutionary experience of Kenya in thisregards. The paper advocates for enactment of a sui-generis law that rectifydeficiency of the existing IP law and adequately protect, preserve, promote, and commercialize the TK and TCE. In so doing, it is suggested to follow theKenya’s footstep, ratify the Swakopmund protocol and adopt the sui-generislaw from Kenyan TK and TCE Act in line with relevant Model laws

    Get PDF
This paper presents an overview of current trends in electronic Business (E-Business), and discusses how an enterprise can use the Electronic Market space based on intelligent agents and data mining techniques to its strategic advantage. We define an agency as a multi-agent system created by integrating agents, selected from a library of reusable agents that have formed a federation. A federation of agents comprises of a set of registered agents, witch are themselves complete knowledge-based system [1].multi-agent system, e-business, data mining, artificial neural networks

Comparing Two Multivariable Complexity Functions Using One-variable Complexity Classes

    Get PDF
The comparison of algorithms complexities is very important both in theory and in practice. When we compare algorithms complexities we need to compare complexity functions. Usually we use one-variable complexity functions. Sometimes, we need multivariable complexity func-tions. In a previous paper we defined several one-variable complexity classes for multivariable complexity functions. Each complexity class of this type is a set of multivariable complexity functions, represented by a one-variable complexity function. In this paper we continue the work from that paper: we define new one-variable complexity classes and we prove several properties. The most important results are several criteria for two multivariable complexity functions to be comparable.Algorithm, One-Variable Complexity Class, One-Variable Complexity Function, Multivariable Complexity Function, Functions Comparison

Trafficking in Persons for Ransom and the Need to Expand the Interpretation of Article 3 of the UN Trafficking Protocol

    Get PDF
As the nature of trafficking in persons continues to manifest itself in myriad ways all over the world, interpretation of the UN Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children (Trafficking Protocol), should be broadened to include newly emerging practices that are similar in nature to those it has already embraced under its definition. The Protocol appears to encompass other forms of trafficking which are unnamed or unforeseen by the definition provided under Article 3. It is time to expand its spectrum. Northeast Africa is plagued by a unique form of trafficking in persons—trafficking in persons for ransom. This involves a practice where people are smuggled, abducted, kidnapped and tortured to compel their relatives and families to pay ransom money. Victims are nationals of Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan. However, as Northeast Africa hosts particularly high numbers of Eritrean migrants and the largest Eritrean diaspora globally, Eritreans are very vulnerable to being targeted for trafficking for ransom. As trafficking for ransom is an emerging trend, legal ramifications have never been studied in full. Few reports try to address legal issues around the phenomenon, and those that do only give it a few paragraphs of attention. There is need for a closer look at this form of trafficking

The impact of entry modes on export knowledge resources and the international performance of SMEs

Les connaissances tacites concernant les marchés étrangers améliorent la performance internationale des PME.This research conceptualizes entry modes as forms of international experience that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) gather and explores the role they play in building export knowledge and fostering international performance. Using a sample of 107 French SMEs from the steel industry, a causal model suggests that various entry modes have direct impacts on the level of explicit foreign market-related knowledge in SMEs and an indirect impact on tacit knowledge. Explicit and tacit knowledge correlate positively, and ultimately, an SME’s tacit knowledge regarding export markets improves its international performance.
