    Integrated motor drives: state of the art and future trends

    With increased need for high power density, high efficiency and high temperature capabilities in Aerospace and Automotive applications, Integrated Motor Drives (IMD) offers a potential solution. However, close physical integration of the converter and the machine may also lead to an increase in components temperature. This requires careful mechanical, structural and thermal analysis; and design of the IMD system. This paper reviews existing IMD technologies and their thermal effects on the IMD system. The effects of the power electronics (PE) position on the IMD system and its respective thermal management concepts are also investigated. The challenges faced in designing and manufacturing of an IMD along with the mechanical and structural impacts of close physical integration is also discussed and potential solutions are provided. Potential converter topologies for an IMD like the Matrix converter, 2-level Bridge, 3-level NPC and Multiphase full bridge converters are also reviewed. Wide band gap devices like SiC and GaN and their packaging in power modules for IMDs are also discussed. Power modules components and packaging technologies are also presented

    The Physics of Star Cluster Formation and Evolution

Bulk kinetic energy is transformed to turbulence with stars forming from cores fed by filaments. In the most compact regions, stellar feedback is least effective in removing the gas and stars may form very efficiently. These are also the regions where, in high-mass clusters, ejecta from some kind of high-mass stars are effectively captured during the formation phase of some of the low mass stars and effectively channeled into the latter to form multiple populations. Star formation epochs in star clusters are generally set by gas flows that determine the abundance of gas in the cluster. We argue that there is likely only one star formation epoch after which clusters remain essentially clear of gas by cluster winds. Collisional dynamics is important in this phase leading to core collapse, expansion and eventual dispersion of every cluster. We review recent developments in the field with a focus on theoretical work.Peer reviewe

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.     Assessment of the humification degree of peat soil under sago (Metroxylon sagu) cultivation based on Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopic characteristics

    Sago palm (Metroxylon sagu) is a tropical crop that can survive the acidic conditions of peat soil, which is cultivated at large scale in Sarawak (Malaysia). The performance of sago palm on deep peat is variable, and not all specimens are able to grow to maturity and produce a trunk. It is hypothesised that sago growth may be influenced by peat humification because a positive relationship between the fertility of peat soil and its degree of humification has been well reported. This article investigates the humification degree of peat soil used for cultivation of sago palms, as indicated by spectroscopic characteristics. The peat soil adjacent to trunking and non-trunking palms was sampled and compared with exposed uncultivated peat. The results showed that, where largely undecomposed woody material predominated in the underlying peat, degree of humification decreased with increasing depth. Uncultivated peat was more highly humified than cultivated peat because the latter was continuously replenished with new plant matter. On the basis of FTIR spectroscopy, no significant difference was found between cultivated peat sampled adjacent to trunking and non-trunking palms. On the other hand, the UV-Vis and FTIR data suggested lower humification degree in the underlying peat which may have led to inconsistent growth

    Outcomes of truncus arteriosus repair in children: 35 years of experience from a single institution

    We evaluated the long-term outcomes following repair of truncus arteriosus (TA) from a single institution. We conducted a retrospective review of children (n = 171) who underwent TA repair between 1979 and 2014. Early mortality rate was 11.7% (20/171). There were 19 late deaths. Most deaths (74%, 29/39) occurred within the first year following surgery. The 1-year mortality rate in 1979-2004 was 18% (25/136) and decreased to 11% (4/35) in 2005-2014. The overall survival rate was 73.6% at 30 years. Multivariate analysis identified postoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (P = 0.003), operative weight <2.5kg (P = 0.012), prior surgical intervention (P = 0.018), and coronary artery anomaly (P = 0.037) as risk factors for early mortality. A Cox regression model identified DiGeorge syndrome (P = 0.008) as a risk factor for late mortality. Freedom from right ventricular outflow tract reoperation was 4.6% at 20 years. Concomitant truncal valve (TV) repair or replacement was undertaken in 20 patients. Additionally, 14 patients underwent late TV repair or replacement. The overall survival rate in patients who underwent TV operation was 76.9% at 20 years. A total of 19 patients had concomitant interrupted aortic arch with a survival rate of 89.5% at 20 years. Median follow-up was 19 years (mean = 17 years, range: 1-34 years). All patients were in New York Heart Association Class I/II at last follow-up. Following repair of TA, patients had good long-term functional status but had high reoperation rates. Repair of interrupted aortic arch and TV were not risk factors for mortality. Postoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, operative weight <2.5kg, prior surgical intervention, and coronary artery anomaly were risk factors for early death.     Wide band gap characteristic of quaternary and flexible Mg and Ga co-doped ZnO transparent conductive thin films

    Transparent conductive and flexible Mg and Ga co-doped ZnO (MGZO) thin films were prepared on poly-ethylene terephthalate (PET) by RF magnetron sputtering technique at room temperature. The effects ofdifferent working pressures on the structural, chemical, morphological, optical and electrical propertiesof MGZO thin films were investigated. X-ray diffraction results indicate that all the MGZO thin films weregrown as polycrystalline wurtzite structures without secondary phases such as MgO, Ga2O3, MgGa2O4,or ZnGa2O4. The MGZO thin film prepared at 6 mTorr has the lowest value of full width at half maximum.A typical survey spectrum of all the MGZO thin films confirmed the presence of Mg, Ga, Zn and O. TheMGZO thin film prepared at 6 mTorr showed the widest optical band gap energy of 3.91 eV and lowestelectrical resistivity of 5.3 × 10−3 cm.1151scopu
