    Measurement of the Bottom-Strange Meson Mixing Phase in the Full CDF Data Set

    We report a measurement of the bottom-strange meson mixing phase \beta_s using the time evolution of B0_s -> J/\psi (->\mu+\mu-) \phi (-> K+ K-) decays in which the quark-flavor content of the bottom-strange meson is identified at production. This measurement uses the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the Collider Detector experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to 9.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. We report confidence regions in the two-dimensional space of \beta_s and the B0_s decay-width difference \Delta\Gamma_s, and measure \beta_s in [-\pi/2, -1.51] U [-0.06, 0.30] U [1.26, \pi/2] at the 68% confidence level, in agreement with the standard model expectation. Assuming the standard model value of \beta_s, we also determine \Delta\Gamma_s = 0.068 +- 0.026 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps-1 and the mean B0_s lifetime, \tau_s = 1.528 +- 0.019 (stat) +- 0.009 (syst) ps, which are consistent and competitive with determinations by other experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, Phys.     Profile of hematological abnormalities of Indian HIV infected individuals

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hematological abnormalities are a common complication of HIV infection. These abnormalities increase as the disease advances. Bone marrow abnormalities occur in all stages of HIV infection.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two hundred HIV infected individual were screened for hematological abnormalities from March 2007–March 2008. Absolute CD4 cell count analysis was carried out by flowcytometry. Depending on the results of the primary screening further investigations were performed, like iron studies, hemolytic work up, PNH work up and bone marrow evaluation. Other investigations included coagulation profile, urine analysis, blood culture (bacterial, fungal, mycobacterial), serology for Epstein Barr virus (EBV), Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Hepatitis B and C, and Parvo B19 infection.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The most common hematological abnormality was anemia, seen in 65.5% (131/200) patients. Iron deficiency anemia was seen in 49.2% (/200) cases while anemia of chronic disease occurred in 50.7% (/200) cases. Bone marrow evaluation was carried out in 14 patients out of which staging marrow was performed in 2 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and did not show any bone marrow infiltration. In remaining12 cases bone marrow was done for evaluation of pancytopenia. Among patients with pancytopenia 50% (6/12) showed granulomas (4 were positive for AFB, 2 were positive for fungal cryptococci), 25% (3/12) showed hemophagocytosis. There was a strong negative correlation between anemia and CD4 counts in this study. Thrombocytopenia was seen in 7% (14/200) cases and had no significant correlation with CD4 counts. No patient had absolute neutrophil count (ANC) < 800 cells/μL. No case of coagulation abnormalities was found.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Anemia in HIV patients can be a good clinical indicator to predict and access the underlying immune status. Patients should be investigated for hematological manifestations and appropriate steps should be taken to identify and treat the reversible factors.</p

    IL-1β Regulates FHL2 and Other Cytoskeleton-Related Genes in Human Chondrocytes

    In osteoarthritis (OA), cartilage destruction is associated not only with an imbalance of anabolic and catabolic processes but also with alterations of the cytoskeletal organization in chondrocytes, although their pathogenetic origin is largely unknown so far. Therefore, we have studied possible effects of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1β on components of the cytoskeleton in OA chondrocytes on gene expression level. Using a whole genome array, we found that IL-1β is involved in the regulation of many cytoskeleton-related genes. Apart from well-known cytoskeletal components, the expression and regulation of four genes coding for LIM proteins were shown. These four genes were previously undescribed in the chondrocyte context. Quantitative PCR analysis confirmed significant downregulation of Fhl1, Fhl2, Lasp1, and Pdlim1 as well as Tubb and Vim by IL-1β. Inhibition of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) by SB203580 counteracted the influence of IL-1β on Fhl2 and Tubb expression, indicating partial involvement of this signaling pathway. Downregulation of the LIM-only protein FHL2 was confirmed additionally on the protein level. In agreement with these results, IL-1β induced changes in the morphology of chondrocytes, the organization of the cytoskeleton, and the cellular distribution of FHL2. We conclude that L-1β is involved in the regulation of various cytoskeletal components in human chondrocytes including the multifunctional protein FHL2. This might be relevant for the pathogenesis of OA
