Non-Markovian Momentum Computing: Universal and Efficient

All computation is physically embedded. Reflecting this, a growing body of results embraces rate equations as the underlying mechanics of thermodynamic computation and biological information processing. Strictly applying the implied continuous-time Markov chains, however, excludes a universe of natural computing. We show that expanding the toolset to continuous-time hidden Markov chains substantially removes the constraints. The general point is made concrete by our analyzing two eminently-useful computations that are impossible to describe with a set of rate equations over the memory states. We design and analyze a thermodynamically-costless bit flip, providing a first counterexample to rate-equation modeling. We generalize this to a costless Fredkin gate---a key operation in reversible computing that is computation universal. Going beyond rate-equation dynamics is not only possible, but necessary if stochastic thermodynamics is to become part of the paradigm for physical information processing.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; Supplementary Material, 1 page; http://csc.ucdavis.edu/~cmg/compmech/pubs/cbdb.ht

    Social Media and Cardiovascular Disease

Personality subtypes and systolic blood pressure (SBP) at night are recognized predictors of cardiovascular disease among social media users. Healthy individuals (n=88, 77% female, 31% African American) were surveyed using the Media and Technology Usage and Attitudes Scale (MTUAS). Demographics, 24-hours SBP, and personality types (e.g., introvert, extravert, and blended) were used. Personality (B= 5.37, t= 2.86, p=.005) significantly predicted elevated SBP in social media users (r2= .157, F(4, 72)=3.37, p=.014). There was a significant gradient increase in nighttime SBP by personality [introvert (M=100, SD=2.1), extrovert (M=102, SD=1.7), and blended (M=111, SD=4.4); all ps.<0.05]. Negative attitudes toward using technology (B= -5.093, t= -2.390, p= .019) also significantly predicted elevated overnight SBP. Higher anxiety/dependence with mobile phones (B=.400, t= 2.49, p=.019) significantly predicted elevated nighttime SBP [r2 = 0.342 F(4, 27) = 3.505, p=.020]. Our findings indicate that a blended personality type and anxiety due to separation from or dependence on a mobile phone or internet use elevate SBP at night, increasing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease

Nonequilibrium thermodynamics of erasure with superconducting flux logic

We implement a thermal-fluctuation-driven logical bit reset on a superconducting flux logic cell. We show that the logical state of the system can be continuously monitored with only a small perturbation to the thermally activated dynamics at 500 mK. We use the trajectory information to derive a single-shot estimate of the work performed on the system per logical cycle. We acquire a sample of 10⁵ erasure trajectories per protocol and show that the work histograms agree with both microscopic theory and global fluctuation theorems. The results demonstrate how to design and diagnose complex, high-speed, and thermodynamically efficient computing using superconducting technology

Harnessing Fluctuations in Thermodynamic Computing via Time-Reversal Symmetries

We experimentally demonstrate that highly structured distributions of work emerge during even the simple task of erasing a single bit. These are signatures of a refined suite of time-reversal symmetries in distinct functional classes of microscopic trajectories. As a consequence, we introduce a broad family of conditional fluctuation theorems that the component work distributions must satisfy. Since they identify entropy production, the component work distributions encode both the frequency of various mechanisms of success and failure during computing, as well giving improved estimates of the total irreversibly-dissipated heat. This new diagnostic tool provides strong evidence that thermodynamic computing at the nanoscale can be constructively harnessed. We experimentally verify this functional decomposition and the new class of fluctuation theorems by measuring transitions between flux states in a superconducting circuit

Mitochondrial Impairment in Cerebrovascular Endothelial Cells is Involved in the Correlation between Body Temperature and Stroke Severity

Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide. The prognostic influence of body temperature on acute stroke in patients has been recently reported; however, hypothermia has confounded experimental results in animal stroke models. This work aimed to investigate how body temperature could prognose stroke severity as well as reveal a possible mitochondrial mechanism in the association of body temperature and stroke severity. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) compromises mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in cerebrovascular endothelial cells (CVECs) and worsens murine experimental stroke. In this study, we report that LPS (0.1 mg/kg) exacerbates stroke infarction and neurological deficits, in the mean time LPS causes temporary hypothermia in the hyperacute stage during 6 hours post-stroke. Lower body temperature is associated with worse infarction and higher neurological deficit score in the LPS-stroke study. However, warming of the LPS-stroke mice compromises animal survival. Furthermore, a high dose of LPS (2 mg/kg) worsens neurological deficits, but causes persistent severe hypothermia that conceals the LPS exacerbation of stroke infarction. Mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I inhibitor, rotenone, replicates the data profile of the LPS-stroke study. Moreover, we have confirmed that rotenone compromises mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in CVECs. Lastly, the pooled data analyses of a large sample size (n=353) demonstrate that stroke mice have lower body temperature compared to sham mice within 6 hours post-surgery; the body temperature is significantly correlated with stroke outcomes; linear regression shows that lower body temperature is significantly associated with higher neurological scores and larger infarct volume. We conclude that post-stroke body temperature predicts stroke severity and mitochondrial impairment in CVECs plays a pivotal role in this hypothermic response. These novel findings suggest that body temperature is prognostic for stroke severity in experimental stroke animal models and may have translational significance for clinical stroke patients - targeting endothelial mitochondria may be a clinically useful approach for stroke therapy

The Constraint Interpretation of Physical Emergence

    Get PDF
I develop a variant of the constraint interpretation of the emergence of purely physical (non-biological) entities, focusing on the principle of the non-derivability of actual physical states from possible physical states (physical laws) alone. While this is a necessary condition for any account of emergence, it is not sufficient, for it becomes trivial if not extended to types of constraint that specifically constitute physical entities, namely, those that individuate and differentiate them. Because physical organizations with these features are in fact interdependent sets of such constraints, and because such constraints on physical laws cannot themselves be derived from physical laws, physical organization is emergent. These two complementary types of constraint are components of a complete non-reductive physicalism, comprising a non-reductive materialism and a non-reductive formalism

The twilight of the Liberal Social Contract? On the Reception of Rawlsian Political Liberalism

    Get PDF
This chapter discusses the Rawlsian project of public reason, or public justification-based 'political' liberalism, and its reception. After a brief philosophical rather than philological reconstruction of the project, the chapter revolves around a distinction between idealist and realist responses to it. Focusing on political liberalism’s critical reception illuminates an overarching question: was Rawls’s revival of a contractualist approach to liberal legitimacy a fruitful move for liberalism and/or the social contract tradition? The last section contains a largely negative answer to that question. Nonetheless the chapter's conclusion shows that the research programme of political liberalism provided and continues to provide illuminating insights into the limitations of liberal contractualism, especially under conditions of persistent and radical diversity. The programme is, however, less receptive to challenges to do with the relative decline of the power of modern states
