    Topological soliton-polaritons in 1D systems of light and fermionic matter

    Quantum nonlinear optics is a quickly growing field with large technological promise, at the same time involving complex and novel many-body phenomena. In the usual scenario, optical nonlinearities originate from the interactions between polaritons, which are hybrid quasi-particles mixing matter and light degrees of freedom. Here we introduce a type of polariton which is intrinsically nonlinear and emerges as the natural quasi-particle in presence quantum degenerate fermionic matter. It is a composite object made of a fermion trapped inside an optical soliton forming a topological defect in a spontaneously formed crystalline structure. Each of these soliton-polaritons carries a Z2\textbf{Z}_2 topological quantum number, as they create a domain wall between two crystalline regions with opposite dimerization so that the fermion is trapped in an interphase state. These composite objects are formally equivalent to those appearing in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model for electrons coupled to lattice phonons.Comment: Edited version. 6+7 pages, 3 figure

    Giant ultrafast Kerr effect in type-II superconductors

    We study the ultrafast Kerr effect and high-harmonic generation in type-II superconductors by formulating a new model for a time-varying electromagnetic pulse normally incident on a thin-film superconductor. It is found that type-II superconductors exhibit exceptionally large χ(3)\chi^{(3)} due to the progressive destruction of Cooper pairs, and display high-harmonic generation at low incident intensities, and the highest nonlinear susceptibility of all known materials in the THz regime. Our theory opens up new avenues for accessible analytical and numerical studies of the ultrafast dynamics of superconductors

    Approximate Methods For Otherwise Intractable Problems

    Recent Monte Carlo methods have expanded the scope of the Bayesian statistical approach. In some situations however, computational methods are often impractically burdensome. We present new methods which reduce this burden and aim to extend the Bayesian toolkit further. This thesis is partitioned into three parts. The first part builds on the Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) method. Existing ABC methods often suffer from a local trapping problem which causes inefficient sampling. We present a new ABC framework which overcomes this problem and additionally allows for model selection as a by-product. We demonstrate that this framework conducts ABC inference with an adaptive ABC kernel and extend the framework to specify this kernel in a completely automated way. Furthermore, the ABC part of the thesis also presents a novel methodology for multifidelity ABC. This method constructs a computationally efficient sampler that minimises the approximation error induced by performing early acceptance with a low fidelity model. The second part of the thesis extends the Reversible Jump Monte Carlo method. Reversible Jump methods often suffer from poor mixing. It is possible to construct a “bridge” of intermediate models to facilitate the model transition. However, this scales poorly to big datasets because it requires many evaluations of the model likelihoods. Here we present a new method which greatly improves the scalability at the cost of some approximation error. However, we show that under weak conditions this error is well controlled and convergence is still achieved. The third part of the thesis introduces a multifidelity spatially clustered Gaussian process model. This model enables cheap modelling of nonstationary spatial statistical problems. The model outperforms existing methodology which perform poorly when predicting output at new spatial locations

    Validation of Messenger Ribonucleic Acid Markers Differentiating Among Human Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Subgroups in an Ovine Model of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Phenotypes

    BACKGROUND: The discovery of biological subphenotypes in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) might offer a new approach to ARDS in general and possibly targeted treatment, but little is known about the underlying biology yet. To validate our recently described ovine ARDS phenotypes model, we compared a subset of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) markers in leukocytes as reported before to display differential expression between human ARDS subphenotypes to the expression in lung tissue in our ovine ARDS phenotypes model (phenotype 1 (Ph1): hypoinflammatory; phenotype 2 (Ph2): hyperinflammatory). METHODS: We studied 23 anesthetized sheep on mechanical ventilation with observation times between 6 and 24 h. They were randomly allocated to the two phenotypes (n = 14 to Ph1 and n = 9 to Ph2). At study end, lung tissue was harvested and preserved in RNAlater. After tissue homogenization in TRIzol, total RNA was extracted and custom capture and reporter probes designed by NanoString Technologies were used to measure the expression of 14 genes of interest and the 6 housekeeping genes on a nCounter SPRINT profiler. RESULTS: Among the 14 mRNA markers, in all animals over all time points, 13 markers showed the same trend in ovine Ph2/Ph1 as previously reported in the MARS cohort: matrix metalloproteinase 8, olfactomedin 4, resistin, G protein-coupled receptor 84, lipocalin 2, ankyrin repeat domain 22, CD177 molecule, and transcobalamin 1 expression was higher in Ph2 and membrane metalloendopeptidase, adhesion G protein-coupled receptor E3, transforming growth factor beta induced, histidine ammonia-lyase, and sulfatase 2 expression was higher in Ph1. These expression patterns could be found when different sources of mRNA – such as blood leukocytes and lung tissue – were compared. CONCLUSION: In human and ovine ARDS subgroups, similar activated pathways might be involved (e.g., oxidative phosphorylation, NF-κB pathway) that result in specific phenotypes

    The increasing atmospheric burden of the greenhouse gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF<sub>6</sub>)

    We report a 40-year history of SF6 atmospheric mole fractions measured at the Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment (AGAGE) monitoring sites, combined with archived air samples, to determine emission estimates from 1978 to 2018. Previously we reported a global emission rate of 7.3±0.6 Gg yr-1 in 2008 and over the past decade emissions have continued to increase by about 24% to 9.04±0.35 Gg yr-1 in 2018. We show that changing patterns in SF6 consumption from developed (Kyoto Protocol Annex-1) to developing countries (non-Annex-1) and the rapid global expansion of the electric power industry, mainly in Asia, have increased the demand for SF6-insulated switchgear, circuit breakers, and transformers. The large bank of SF6 sequestered in this electrical equipment provides a substantial source of emissions from maintenance, replacement, and continuous leakage. Other emissive sources of SF6 occur from the magnesium, aluminium, and electronics industries as well as more minor industrial applications. More recently, reported emissions, including those from electrical equipment and metal industries, primarily in the Annex-1 countries, have declined steadily through substitution of alternative blanketing gases and technological improvements in less emissive equipment and more efficient industrial practices. Nevertheless, there are still demands for SF6 in Annex-1 countries due to economic growth, as well as continuing emissions from older equipment and additional emissions from newly installed SF6-insulated electrical equipment, although at low emission rates. In addition, in the non-Annex-1 countries, SF6 emissions have increased due to an expansion in the growth of the electrical power, metal, and electronics industries to support their continuing development. There is an annual difference of 2.5-5 Gg yr-1 (1990-2018) between our modelled top-down emissions and the UNFCCC-reported bottom-up emissions (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), which we attempt to reconcile through analysis of the potential contribution of emissions from the various industrial applications which use SF6. We also investigate regional emissions in East Asia (China, S. Korea) and western Europe and their respective contributions to the global atmospheric SF6 inventory. On an average annual basis, our estimated emissions from the whole of China are approximately 10 times greater than emissions from western Europe.     Physical function endpoints in cancer cachexia clinical trials: Systematic Review 1 of the cachexia endpoints series

    In cancer cachexia trials, measures of physical function are commonly used as endpoints. For drug trials to obtain regulatory approval, efficacy in physical function endpoints may be needed alongside other measures. However, it is not clear which physical function endpoints should be used. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the frequency and diversity of physical function endpoints in cancer cachexia trials. Following a comprehensive electronic literature search of MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane (1990-2021), records were retrieved. Eligible trials met the following criteria: adults (≥18 years), controlled design, more than 40 participants, use of a cachexia intervention for more than 14 days and use of a physical function endpoint. Physical function measures were classified as an objective measure (hand grip strength [HGS], stair climb power [SCP], timed up and go [TUG] test, 6-min walking test [6MWT] and short physical performance battery [SPPB]), clinician assessment of function (Karnofsky Performance Status [KPS] or Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group-Performance Status [ECOG-PS]) or patient-reported outcomes (physical function subscale of the European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaires [EORTC QLQ-C30 or C15]). Data extraction was performed using Covidence and followed PRISMA guidance (PROSPERO registration: CRD42022276710). A total of 5975 potential studies were examined and 71 were eligible. Pharmacological interventions were assessed in 38 trials (54%). Of these, 11 (29%, n = 1184) examined megestrol and 5 (13%, n = 1928) examined anamorelin; nutritional interventions were assessed in 21 trials (30%); and exercise-based interventions were assessed in 6 trials (8%). The remaining six trials (8%) assessed multimodal interventions. Among the objective measures of physical function (assessed as primary or secondary endpoints), HGS was most commonly examined (33 trials, n = 5081) and demonstrated a statistically significant finding in 12 (36%) trials (n = 2091). The 6MWT was assessed in 12 trials (n = 1074) and was statistically significant in 4 (33%) trials (n = 403), whereas SCP, TUG and SPPB were each assessed in 3 trials. KPS was more commonly assessed than the newer ECOG-PS (16 vs. 9 trials), and patient-reported EORTC QLQ-C30 physical function was reported in 25 trials. HGS is the most commonly used physical function endpoint in cancer cachexia clinical trials. However, heterogeneity in study design, populations, intervention and endpoint selection make it difficult to comment on the optimal endpoint and how to measure this. We offer several recommendations/considerations to improve the design of future clinical trials in cancer cachexia

    The twilight of the Liberal Social Contract? On the Reception of Rawlsian Political Liberalism

    This chapter discusses the Rawlsian project of public reason, or public justification-based 'political' liberalism, and its reception. After a brief philosophical rather than philological reconstruction of the project, the chapter revolves around a distinction between idealist and realist responses to it. Focusing on political liberalism’s critical reception illuminates an overarching question: was Rawls’s revival of a contractualist approach to liberal legitimacy a fruitful move for liberalism and/or the social contract tradition? The last section contains a largely negative answer to that question. Nonetheless the chapter's conclusion shows that the research programme of political liberalism provided and continues to provide illuminating insights into the limitations of liberal contractualism, especially under conditions of persistent and radical diversity. The programme is, however, less receptive to challenges to do with the relative decline of the power of modern states
