    Investigations on the vulnerability of advanced CMOS technologies to MGy dose environments

    This paper investigates the TID sensitivity of silicon-based technologies at several MGy irradiation doses to evaluate their potential for high TID-hardened circuits. Such circuits will be used in several specific applications suc as safety systems of current or future nuclear power plants considering various radiation environments including normal and accidental operating conditions, high energy physics instruments, fusion experiments or deep space missions. Various device designs implemented in well established bulk silicon and Partially Depleted SOI technologies are studied here up to 3 MGy. Furthermore, new insights are given on the vulnerability of more advanced technologies including planar Fully Depleted SOI and multiple-gate SOI transistors at such high dose. Potential of tested technologies are compared and discussed for stand-alone integrated circuits

    Open Access articleThe management of urban stormwater has become increasingly complex over recent decades. Consequently, terminology describing the principles and practices of urban drainage has become increasingly diverse, increasing the potential for confusion and miscommunication. This paper documents the history, scope, application and underlying principles of terms used in urban drainage and provides recommendations for clear communication of these principles. Terminology evolves locally and thus has an important role in establishing awareness and credibility of new approaches and contains nuanced understandings of the principles that are applied locally to address specific problems. Despite the understandable desire to have a ‘uniform set of terminology’, such a concept is flawed, ignoring the fact that terms reflect locally shared understanding. The local development of terminology thus has an important role in advancing the profession, but authors should facilitate communication between disciplines and between regions of the world, by being explicit and accurate in their application

    Observing the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts

    Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) were first detected thanks to their prompt emission, which was the only information available for decades. In 2010, while the high-energy prompt emission remains the main tool for the detection and the first localization of GRB sources, our understanding of this crucial phase of GRBs has made great progress. We discuss some recent advances in this field, like the occasional detection of the prompt emission at all wavelengths, from optical to GeV; the existence of sub-luminous GRBs; the attempts to standardize GRBs; and the possible detection of polarization in two very bright GRBs. Despite these advances, tantalizing observational and theoretical challenges still exist, concerning the detection of the faintest GRBs, the panchromatic observation of GRBs from their very beginning, the origin of the prompt emission, or the understanding of the physics at work during this phase. Significant progress on this last topic is expected with SVOM thanks to the observation of dozens of GRBs from optical to MeV during the burst itself, and the measure of the redshift for the majority of them. SVOM will also change our view of the prompt GRB phase in another way. Within a few years, the sensitivity of sky surveys at optical and radio frequencies, and outside the electromagnetic domain in gravitational waves or neutrinos, will allow them to detect several new types of transient signals, and SVOM will be uniquely suited to identify which of these transients are associated with GRBs. This radically novel look at GRBs may elucidate the complex physics producing these bright flashes.Comment: To appear in a special issue of Comptes Rendus Physique "GRB studies in the SVOM era", Eds.     High Total Ionizing Dose and Temperature Effects on Micro- and Nano-Electronic Devices

    This paper investigates the vulnerability of several micro- and nano-electronic technologies to a mixed harsh environment involving high total ionizing dose at MGy levels and high temperature. Such operating conditions emerge today for several applications like new security systems in existing or future nuclear power plants, fusion experiments, or deep space missions. In this work, the competing effects of ionizing radiations and temperature are characterized in elementary devices made of MOS transistors from several technologies. First, devices are irradiated using a radiation laboratory X-ray source up to MGy dose levels at room temperature. Devices are either grounded or biased during irradiation to simulate two major circuit cases: a circuit which waits for a wake up signal, representing most of the lifetime of an integrated circuit operating in a harsh environment, and a nominal circuit function. Devices are then annealed at several temperatures to discuss the post-irradiation behavior and to determine whether an elevated temperature is an issue or not for circuit function in mixed harsh environments

ObjectiveTo evaluate the benefit and risks of aspirin in addition to ticagrelor among patients with ACS beyond 1 month after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Design, Setting, and ParticipantsThis is a nonprespecified, post hoc analysis of GLOBAL LEADERS, a randomized, open-label superiority trial comparing 2 antiplatelet treatment strategies after PCI. The trial included 130 secondary/tertiary care hospitals in different countries, with 15991 unselected patients with stable coronary artery disease or ACS undergoing PCI. Patients had outpatient visits at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months after index procedure. InterventionsThe experimental group received aspirin plus ticagrelor for 1 month followed by 23-month ticagrelor monotherapy; the reference group received aspirin plus either clopidogrel (stable coronary artery disease) or ticagrelor (ACS) for 12 months, followed by 12-month aspirin monotherapy. In this analysis, we examined the clinical outcomes occurring between 31 days and 365 days after randomization, specifically in patients with ACS who, within this time frame, were assigned to receive either ticagrelor alone or ticagrelor and aspirin. Main Outcomes and MeasuresThe primary outcome was the composite of all-cause death or new Q-wave myocardial infarction. ResultsOf 15968 participants, there were 7487 patients with ACS enrolled; 3750 patients were assigned to the experimental group and 3737 patients to the reference group. Between 31 and 365 days after randomization, the primary outcome occurred in 55 patients (1.5%) in the experimental group and in 75 patients (2.0%) in the reference group (hazard ratio [HR], 0.73; 95% CI, 0.51-1.03; P=.07); investigator-reported Bleeding Academic Research Consortium-defined bleeding type 3 or 5 occurred in 28 patients (0.8%) in the experimental group and in 54 patients (1.5%) in the reference arm (HR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.33-0.81; P=.004). Conclusions and RelevanceBetween 1 month and 12 months after PCI in ACS, aspirin was associated with increased bleeding risk and appeared not to add to the benefit of ticagrelor on ischemic events. These findings should be interpreted as exploratory and hypothesis generating; however, they pave the way for further trials evaluating aspirin-free antiplatelet strategies after PCI.     Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    A crowd of precarious micro-workers? Results of a statistical survey on a French crowdsourcing platform

    In 2006, Wired reporter Jeff Howe introduced the neologism “crowdsourcing” to describe “the act of taking a job traditionally performed by […] an employee and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people in the form of an open call”. Different types of practices may fall within this definition ; here, we will focus on a business-driven type of crowdsourcing in which a platform help companies to outsource tasks to a mass of Internet "pieceworkers", as in the case of the well-known Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT).This is the crowdsourcing business model. Since daunting tasks such as image moderation or Internet searches cannot be entirely delegated to AI, crowdsourcing platforms offer to break them down into micro-tasks which can be accomplish at any time by a crowd of Internet users at a very low cost. As for the crowdworkers, they're supposed to join the platform to make ends meet by to converting their spare time into productive time: instead of playing onscreen Solitaire or surfing the web for free, they are invited to earn a few money by tagging photos.The purpose of our research program is to examine, beyond the crowdsourcing business model, what the “valuation of spare time” really means. For this purpose, we’ve been carrying out a fieldwork research on the French platform Foule Factory (FF). Younger and smaller than the its American counterpart AMT, FF is nevertheless the best way to understand what crowdsourcing really is in today’s France.This communication proposal is thus a follow-up to our previous communication during the last SASE congress in Kyoto. For this new edition, we will focus on the results of a questionnaire administered in the summer of 2018 to n=1006 workers estimated to represent the entire working crowd. The research question we will ask is as follows: are they a crowd of precarious workers?Our previous research has led us to two results. On the one hand, we have shown that crowdsourcing platforms operate almost in the same way as the type 19th century "sweating system" : they subcontract tasks to homeworkers who are paid (poorly) on a piecework basis (Barraud de Lagerie and Sigalo Santos, 2019). On the other hand, we have shown that three types of use of the platform coexist: interstitial use, use on free time and extensive use (Barraud de Lagerie and Sigalo Santos, 2018). But we were not able to determine which worker profile is the most frequent.Here, we will use statistics to inform the exact profile of the workers, and thus to question the socio-demographic characteristics of the crowd that contributes to Foule Factory. Our preliminary results suggest that the workers are much less vulnerable than one might think. This does not mean that the legality and legitimacy of crowdsourcing should not be questioned, but rather that it should perhaps be interpreted more subtly than simply from the perspective of the exploitation of the weakest
