A_4 flavour symmetry breaking scheme for understanding quark and neutrino mixing angles
We propose a spontaneous A_4 flavour symmetry breaking scheme to understand
the observed pattern of quark and neutrino mixing. The fermion mass eigenvalues
are arbitrary, but the mixing angles are constrained in such a way that the
overall patterns are explained while also leaving sufficient freedom to fit the
detailed features of the observed values, including CP violating phases. The
scheme realises the proposal of Low and Volkas to generate zero quark mixing
and tribimaximal neutrino mixing at tree-level, with deviations from both
arising from small corrections after spontaneous A_4 breaking. In the neutrino
sector, the breaking is A_4 --> Z_2, while in the quark and charged-lepton
sectors it is A_4 --> Z_3 = C_3. The full theory has A_4 completely broken, but
the two different unbroken subgroups in the two sectors force the dominant
mixing patterns to be as stated above. Radiative effects within each sector are
shown to deviate neutrino mixing from tribimaximal, while maintaining zero
quark mixing. Interactions between the two sectors -- "cross-talk" -- induce
nonzero quark mixing, and additional deviation from tribimaximal neutrino
mixing. We discuss the vacuum alignment challenge the scenario faces, and
suggest three generic ways to approach the problem. We follow up one of those
ways by sketching how an explicit model realising the symmetry breaking

Hepatitis C Virus NS5B Protein Is a Membrane-Associated Phosphoprotein with a Predominantly Perinuclear Localization
AbstractHepatitis C virus NS5B protein is an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. To investigate the properties and function of this protein, we have expressed the NS5B protein in insect and mammalian cells. NS5B was found to be present as fine speckles in the cytoplasm, particularly concentrated in the perinuclear region, suggesting its association with the nuclear membrane, the endoplasmic reticulum, or the Golgi complex. This conclusion was supported by the biochemical demonstration that NS5B was associated with the membranes in the cells. Furthermore, it was shown that NS5B protein is a phosphoprotein. These properties may be related to its function as an RNA polymerase
One-way multigrid method in electronic structure calculations
We propose a simple and efficient one-way multigrid method for
self-consistent electronic structure calculations based on iterative
diagonalization. Total energy calculations are performed on several different
levels of grids starting from the coarsest grid, with wave functions
transferred to each finer level. The only changes compared to a single grid
calculation are interpolation and orthonormalization steps outside the original
total energy calculation and required only for transferring between grids. This
feature results in a minimal amount of code change, and enables us to employ a
sophisticated interpolation method and noninteger ratio of grid spacings.
Calculations employing a preconditioned conjugate gradient method are presented
for two examples, a quantum dot and a charged molecular system. Use of three
grid levels with grid spacings 2h, 1.5h, and h decreases the computer time by

Non-Fermi liquid behavior and scaling of low frequency suppression in optical conductivity spectra of CaRuO
Optical conductivity spectra of paramagnetic CaRuO are
investigated at various temperatures. At T=10 K, it shows a non-Fermi liquid
behavior of , similar to the case
of a ferromagnet SrRuO. As the temperature () is increased, on the other
hand, in the low frequency region is progressively
suppressed, deviating from the 1/{\omega}^{\frac 12%}-dependence.
Interestingly, the suppression of is found to scale with
at all temperatures. The origin of the scaling

Nickel and platinum group metal nanoparticle production by <i>Desulfovibrio alaskensis</i> G20
Desulfovibrio alaskensis G20 is an anaerobic sulfate reducing bacteria. While Desulfovibrio species have previously been shown to reduce palladium and platinum to the zero-state, forming nanoparticles in the process; there have been no reports that D. alaskensis is able to form these nanoparticles. Metal nanoparticles have properties that make them ideal for use in many industrial and medical applications, such as their size and shape giving them higher catalytic activity than the bulk form of the same metal. Nanoparticles of the platinum group metals in particular are highly sought after for their catalytic ability and herein we report the formation of both palladium and platinum nanoparticles by D. alaskensis and the biotransformation of solvated nickel ions to nanoparticle form
Representational predicaments for employees: Their impact on perceptions of supervisors\u27 individualized consideration and on employee job satisfaction
A representational predicament for a subordinate vis-à -vis his or her immediate superior involves perceptual incongruence with the superior about the subordinate\u27s work or work context, with unfavourable implications for the employee. An instrument to measure the incidence of two types of representational predicament, being neglected and negative slanting, was developed and then validated through an initial survey of 327 employees. A subsequent substantive survey with a fresh sample of 330 employees largely supported a conceptual model linking being neglected and negative slanting to perceptions of low individualized consideration by superiors and to low overall job satisfaction. The respondents in both surveys were all Hong Kong Chinese. Two case examples drawn from qualitative interviews illustrate and support the conceptual model. Based on the research findings, we recommend some practical exercises to use in training interventions with leaders and subordinates. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC
Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search
Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe
Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.
BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.
