    El proyecto ambiental escolar y su relación con el e-learning en niños de preescolar de la Escuela Normal Superior La Hacienda de Barranquilla

    Aquest treball de recerca té per objectiu fer servir les TIC (tecnologies de la informació i la comunicació) com a metodologia adequada per a enfortir els processos d’aprenentatge en els infants de preescolar. L’experiència es fa a l’Escola Normal Superior La Hisenda de Barranquilla. Es tracta d’una metodologia de caràcter lúdico-pedagògic que permet dinamitzar i enfortir els processos d’ensenyament i aprenentatge mitjançant un projecte ambiental escolar, utilitzant el recurs facilitat per l’anomenat e-learning (educació i capacitació per mitjà d’internet). Per a dur a terme el projecte, es va triar una mostra de 75 infants i 10 professores del nivell preescolar. Prèviament es van fer enquestes als docents encarregats d’aquests graus amb la finalitat de determinar quins coneixements tenien de tecnologia i la utilitat que li atribuïen. Els resultats van permetre saber que la majoria no emprava la tecnologia en el quefer pedagògic per manca de temps i poc coneixement del tema.Aquesta investigació es fa per a optar al títol de magíster en E-learning, ofert en el conveni entre la Universitat Autònoma de Bucaramanga (UNAB), Colòmbia, i la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), Espanya.The aim of this research project is to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) as an appropriate method for strengthening the learning processes of pre-school children. The experience was carried out in Escuela Normal Superior La Hacienda de Barranquilla in Colombia. The method in question is both fun and educational, enabling teaching-learning processes to be boosted and supported by means of a school environment project in e-learning mode.A sample of 75 pre-school children and 10 pre-school teachers was selected to take part in the project. Before it began, the teachers in charge were surveyed in order to determine their knowledge of technology and to ascertain how useful they considered it to be.     Presentamos un estudio sobre 179 casos de Pilomatrixoma recogidos en los archivos del Hospital General 'Vall d'Hebrón' de Barcelona, entre los años 1972 y 1988. Tumoración de presentación pediátrica, cerca del 50% de los casos se han observado en menores de 20 años y con una afectación porcentual por sexos parecida. Cerca del 75% de casos se presentan como tumoración única de menos de 15 milímetros de diámetro. La presentación múltiple solo ocurre en el 2,8%. Algo más del 50% de casos se localizan en cara y cuello, destacando la región preauricular. La siguen en frecuencia de aparición las extremidades superiores (27%), extremidades inferiores (11 %) y sólo un 6,7% en el resto del cuerpo. Aparición de recidivas sólo en el 0,55% de casos

    Association of nutritional status and anemia with multimicronutrient supplementation in young children in Peru

    Introduction: Although several social interventions have been developed by the Peruvian State, anemia is present in one out of every two children in Peru. Thus, it is important to evaluate whether such interventions are achieving their objectives. Objective: This study aimed to determine the association of nutritional status and anemia with multi-micronutrient supplementation in children younger than three years in Huancayo, Peru. Materials and Methods: This retrospective, longitudinal, analytical, and observational study included secondary data of children younger than 3 years from the Sicaya District, in the Huancayo province. Data were collected from health center medical records. Nutritional and anemia status, and socio-demographic characteristics of children receiving multi-micronutrient supplementation were recorded. Statistical analyses were based on generalized linear models. Results: Data of 76 children with available medical records were analyzed, and their pre- and post-intervention median ages were 6 and 11 months (range: 7–35 months), respectively. Significant positive linear correlations were observed between the number of multi-micronutrient doses and weight, height, and hemoglobin concentration. In bivariate and multivariate analyses, no significant associations were observed between anthropometric measurements and anemia (after multi-micronutrient intervention) (p>0.05), nor between the number of received doses of multi-micronutrients, sex, and age. Conclusion: Multi-micronutrient supplementation may be correlated with both physiological and anthropometric variables, but not with indicators of child development. These associations require further evaluations to determine whether social programs promoting multi-micronutrient supplementation improve the development of children with anemia

    The Database of European Forest Insect and Disease Disturbances: DEFID2

    [EN] Insect and disease outbreaks in forests are biotic disturbances that can profoundly alter ecosystem dynamics. In many parts of the world, these disturbance regimes are intensifying as the climate changes and shifts the distribution of species and biomes. As a result, key forest ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, regulation of water flows, wood production, protection of soils, and the conservation of bio-diversity, could be increasingly compromised. Despite the relevance of these detri-mental effects, there are currently no spatially detailed databases that record insect and disease disturbances on forests at the pan-European scale. Here, we present the new Database of European Forest Insect and Disease Disturbances (DEFID2). It comprises over 650,000 harmonized georeferenced records, mapped as polygons or points, of insects and disease disturbances that occurred between 1963 and 2021 in European forests. The records currently span eight different countries and were acquired through diverse methods (e.g., ground surveys, remote sensing techniques). The records in DEFID2 are described by a set of qualitative attributes, including se-verity and patterns of damage symptoms, agents, host tree species, climate-driven trigger factors, silvicultural practices, and eventual sanitary interventions. They are further complemented with a satellite- based quantitative characterization of the affected forest areas based on Landsat Normalized Burn Ratio time series, and dam-age metrics derived from them using the LandTrendr spectral–temporal segmentation algorithm (including onset, duration, magnitude, and rate of the disturbance), and pos-sible interactions with windthrow and wildfire events. The DEFID2 database is a novel resource for many large-scale applications dealing with biotic disturbances. It offers a unique contribution to design networks of experiments, improve our understanding of ecological processes underlying biotic forest disturbances, monitor their dynamics, and enhance their representation in land-climate models. Further data sharing is en-couraged to extend and improve the DEFID2 database continuously.     Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

    One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI

    Severe early onset preeclampsia: short and long term clinical, psychosocial and biochemical aspects

    Preeclampsia is a pregnancy specific disorder commonly defined as de novo hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks gestational age. It occurs in approximately 3-5% of pregnancies and it is still a major cause of both foetal and maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide1. As extensive research has not yet elucidated the aetiology of preeclampsia, there are no rational preventive or therapeutic interventions available. The only rational treatment is delivery, which benefits the mother but is not in the interest of the foetus, if remote from term. Early onset preeclampsia (<32 weeks’ gestational age) occurs in less than 1% of pregnancies. It is, however often associated with maternal morbidity as the risk of progression to severe maternal disease is inversely related with gestational age at onset2. Resulting prematurity is therefore the main cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity in patients with severe preeclampsia3. Although the discussion is ongoing, perinatal survival is suggested to be increased in patients with preterm preeclampsia by expectant, non-interventional management. This temporising treatment option to lengthen pregnancy includes the use of antihypertensive medication to control hypertension, magnesium sulphate to prevent eclampsia and corticosteroids to enhance foetal lung maturity4. With optimal maternal haemodynamic status and reassuring foetal condition this results on average in an extension of 2 weeks. Prolongation of these pregnancies is a great challenge for clinicians to balance between potential maternal risks on one the eve hand and possible foetal benefits on the other. Clinical controversies regarding prolongation of preterm preeclamptic pregnancies still exist – also taking into account that preeclampsia is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the Netherlands5 - a debate which is even more pronounced in very preterm pregnancies with questionable foetal viability6-9. Do maternal risks of prolongation of these very early pregnancies outweigh the chances of neonatal survival? Counselling of women with very early onset preeclampsia not only comprises of knowledge of the outcome of those particular pregnancies, but also knowledge of outcomes of future pregnancies of these women is of major clinical importance.     Search for stop and higgsino production using diphoton Higgs boson decays

    Results are presented of a search for a "natural" supersymmetry scenario with gauge mediated symmetry breaking. It is assumed that only the supersymmetric partners of the top-quark (stop) and the Higgs boson (higgsino) are accessible. Events are examined in which there are two photons forming a Higgs boson candidate, and at least two b-quark jets. In 19.7 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collision data at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, recorded in the CMS experiment, no evidence of a signal is found and lower limits at the 95% confidence level are set, excluding the stop mass below 360 to 410 GeV, depending on the higgsino mass

    Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements

    Impact of COVID-19 on cardiovascular testing in the United States versus the rest of the world

    Objectives: This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-US institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Methods: Data were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States. Results: Reductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p < 0.001). Significantly more U.S. facilities reported increased use of telehealth and patient screening measures than non-U.S. facilities, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and COVID-19 testing. Reductions in volumes of procedures differed between U.S. regions, with larger declines observed in the Northeast (76%) and Midwest (74%) than in the South (62%) and West (44%). Prevalence of COVID-19, staff redeployments, outpatient centers, and urban centers were associated with greater reductions in volume in U.S. facilities in a multivariable analysis. Conclusions: We observed marked reductions in U.S. cardiovascular testing in the early phase of the pandemic and significant variability between U.S. regions. The association between reductions of volumes and COVID-19 prevalence in the United States highlighted the need for proactive efforts to maintain access to cardiovascular testing in areas most affected by outbreaks of COVID-19 infection
