    La isla de calor urbano de Madrid durante la ola de calor de julio 2015

    Este trabajo analiza la isla de calor urbana de Madrid durante julio de 2015. Los registros históricos de temperatura confirman que siguió el patrón de anteriores eventos: número elevado de días muy cálidos, pero sin alcanzar records absolutos, y noches muy cálidas. El fenómeno de la isla de calor atmosférica estuvo presente casi todas las noches con una notable magnitud (entre 2-4ºC); por el contrario, durante las horas diurnas se registró una isla de frescor relativamente suave (< 1ºC). Las imágenes de satélite revelan que el campo térmico superficial experimentó idéntico ciclo diario, estrechamente ligado a los usos del terreno, con la formación de una isla de calor nocturna de una magnitud similar a la atmosférica, y una isla de frescor diurna igual de potente. La correlación entre la evolución temporal de ambas manifestaciones, al igual que el contraste especial durante la noche más cálida, revela un comportamiento similar durante las horas nocturnas, lo cual ofrece perspectivas interesantes para la integración de ambas variables en estudios aplicados.This paper analyzes Madrid´s Urban Heat Island, comparing air and land surface temperature records during July 2015. The long-term analysis of temperature records from Retiro confirms a long spell of very warm days, without diurnal breaking records, but very hot nights. The atmospheric UHI was a permanent feature, reaching 2-4ºC on average; by day, a “cool” island was also detected, but weaker. Satellite images reveal an identical daily cycle, closely related to land uses, the “diurnal cool island” becoming as intense as the nocturnal UHI. The temporal correlation among both UHI´s in two selected locations, as well as its spatial structure during the warmest night shows good agreement, offering interesting perspectives for the integration of both variables in applied studies

    Distribution area of Juniperus oxycedrus L. in Central Spain (Madrid)

    The Iberian populations of Juniperus oxycedrus L. subsp. oxycedrus have been studied by several authors who consider their condition as unfavourable. In the Madrid Region, current status, dynamic and distribution area are unknown even when their populations, specifically those who form arborescent shrubs, are included in the type 5210 (Habitat Directive 92/43/EEC). These formations are developed in austere Mediterranean mountain typical of agro ecosystems of high value that have interesting dynamics of recolonization, especially in those areas where agricultural and livestock systems have suffered a setback. This study aims to understand the distribution of juniper in the region of Madrid as the first step to identify and assess the dynamic changes in recent decades. To update the cartography of this species the available information has been checked and completed with photointerpretation and fieldwork. Based on this cartography and the information relating to the physical and biotic variables four types of juniper were differentiated by multivariate methods. On the other hand, two types of dynamics were recognized and it was studied in depth the genesis of changes produced in these forests in the last decades

    Seis mil años de gestión y dinámica antrópica en el entorno del Parque Natural de los Collados del Asón (Cordillera Cantábrica Oriental)

    El conocimiento acerca de la evolución de los espacios de montaña resulta ser una problemática de gran interés tanto desde el punto de vista paleoambiental como en relación con las ocupaciones humanas. En este trabajo analizamos la composición y evolución de la vegetación de la turbera de Sotombo, en las cercanías del Parque Natural de los Collados del Asón (Cantabria) en los últimos 6000 años, a través del estudio de pólenes, esporas y microfósiles no polínicos, apoyados por una serie de 8 dataciones radiocarbónicas. Los principales resultados señalan en el inicio de la secuencia el dominio de los bosques caducifolios junto con pinares ca. 5926-2418 cal BP. A partir de este momento se evidencia claramente la antropización del paisaje, en fechas contemporáneas a la expansión de los hayedos. Con posterioridad (desde ca. 596 cal BP) se inicia el desarrollo de las praderas montanas que dominan el paisaje actual.ABSTRACT. The knowledge about the evolution of the mountain areas is a very interesting issue from the palaeoenvironmental stand point, but also from the archaeological view in relation with human occupations. In this paper we analyze the composition and evolution of the vegetation of the peat bog of Sotombo, located in the vicinity of the Collados del Asón Natural Park (Cantabria) over the last 6000 years, through the study of pollens, spores and non-pollen palynomorphs, with the support of 8 AMS radiocarbon dates. The main results point the dominance of deciduous forests with pines between ca. 5926-2418 cal BP. From this moment is clearly evident the anthropogenic activities, in contemporary to the expansion of the beech forests.     <i>Gaia</i> Data Release 1. Summary of the astrometric, photometric, and survey properties

    Context. At about 1000 days after the launch of Gaia we present the first Gaia data release, Gaia DR1, consisting of astrometry and photometry for over 1 billion sources brighter than magnitude 20.7. Aims. A summary of Gaia DR1 is presented along with illustrations of the scientific quality of the data, followed by a discussion of the limitations due to the preliminary nature of this release. Methods. The raw data collected by Gaia during the first 14 months of the mission have been processed by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC) and turned into an astrometric and photometric catalogue. Results. Gaia DR1 consists of three components: a primary astrometric data set which contains the positions, parallaxes, and mean proper motions for about 2 million of the brightest stars in common with the HIPPARCOS and Tycho-2 catalogues – a realisation of the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) – and a secondary astrometric data set containing the positions for an additional 1.1 billion sources. The second component is the photometric data set, consisting of mean G-band magnitudes for all sources. The G-band light curves and the characteristics of ∼3000 Cepheid and RR-Lyrae stars, observed at high cadence around the south ecliptic pole, form the third component. For the primary astrometric data set the typical uncertainty is about 0.3 mas for the positions and parallaxes, and about 1 mas yr−1 for the proper motions. A systematic component of ∼0.3 mas should be added to the parallax uncertainties. For the subset of ∼94 000 HIPPARCOS stars in the primary data set, the proper motions are much more precise at about 0.06 mas yr−1. For the secondary astrometric data set, the typical uncertainty of the positions is ∼10 mas. The median uncertainties on the mean G-band magnitudes range from the mmag level to ∼0.03 mag over the magnitude range 5 to 20.7. Conclusions. Gaia DR1 is an important milestone ahead of the next Gaia data release, which will feature five-parameter astrometry for all sources. Extensive validation shows that Gaia DR1 represents a major advance in the mapping of the heavens and the availability of basic stellar data that underpin observational astrophysics. Nevertheless, the very preliminary nature of this first Gaia data release does lead to a number of important limitations to the data quality which should be carefully considered before drawing conclusions from the data

    Hispanic Latin America, Spain and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean: A rich source of reference material for public health, epidemiology and tropical medicine

    There is a multiplicity of journals originating in Spain and the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (SSLAC) in the health sciences of relevance to the fields of epidemiology and public health. While the subject matter of epidemiology in Spain shares many features with its neighbours in Western Europe, many aspects of epidemiology in Latin America are particular to that region. There are also distinctive theoretical and philosophical approaches to the study of epidemiology and public health arising from traditions such as the Latin American social medicine movement, of which there may be limited awareness. A number of online bibliographic databases are available which focus primarily on health sciences literature arising in Spain and Latin America, the most prominent being Literatura Latinoamericana en Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS) and LATINDEX. Some such as LILACS also extensively index grey literature. As well as in Spanish, interfaces are provided in English and Portuguese. Abstracts of articles may also be provided in English with an increasing number of journals beginning to publish entire articles written in English. Free full text articles are becoming accessible, one of the most comprehensive sources being the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). There is thus an extensive range of literature originating in Spain and SSLAC freely identifiable and often accessible online, and with the potential to provide useful inputs to the study of epidemiology and public health provided that any reluctance to explore these resources can be overcome.     A precise architecture characterization of the π\pi Men planetary system

    The bright star π\pi Men was chosen as the first target for a radial velocity follow-up to test the performance of ESPRESSO, the new high-resolution spectrograph at the ESO's Very-Large Telescope (VLT). The star hosts a multi-planet system (a transiting 4 M_\oplus planet at \sim0.07 au, and a sub-stellar companion on a \sim2100-day eccentric orbit) which is particularly appealing for a precise multi-technique characterization. With the new ESPRESSO observations, that cover a time span of 200 days, we aim to improve the precision and accuracy of the planet parameters and search for additional low-mass companions. We also take advantage of new photometric transits of π\pi Men c observed by TESS over a time span that overlaps with that of the ESPRESSO follow-up campaign. We analyse the enlarged spectroscopic and photometric datasets and compare the results to those in the literature. We further characterize the system by means of absolute astrometry with Hipparcos and Gaia. We used the spectra of ESPRESSO for an independent determination of the stellar fundamental parameters. We present a precise characterization of the planetary system around π\pi Men. The ESPRESSO radial velocities alone (with typical uncertainty of 10 cm/s) allow for a precise retrieval of the Doppler signal induced by π\pi Men c. The residuals show an RMS of 1.2 m/s, and we can exclude companions with a minimum mass less than \sim2 M_\oplus within the orbit of π\pi Men c). We improve the ephemeris of π\pi Men c using 18 additional TESS transits, and in combination with the astrometric measurements, we determine the inclination of the orbital plane of π\pi Men b with high precision (ib=45.81.1+1.4i_{b}=45.8^{+1.4}_{-1.1} deg). This leads to the precise measurement of its absolute mass mb=14.10.4+0.5m_{b}=14.1^{+0.5}_{-0.4} MJup_{Jup}, and shows that the planetary orbital planes are highly misaligned.Comment: Accepted for publication on A&

    Gaia Data Release 1: Testing parallaxes with local Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars

    Context. Parallaxes for 331 classical Cepheids, 31 Type II Cepheids, and 364 RR Lyrae stars in common between Gaia and the Hipparcos and Tycho-2 catalogues are published in Gaia Data Release 1 (DR1) as part of the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS). Aims. In order to test these first parallax measurements of the primary standard candles of the cosmological distance ladder, which involve astrometry collected by Gaia during the initial 14 months of science operation, we compared them with literature estimates and derived new period-luminosity (PL), period-Wesenheit (PW) relations for classical and Type II Cepheids and infrared PL, PL-metallicity (PLZ), and optical luminosity-metallicity (M V -[Fe/H]) relations for the RR Lyrae stars, with zero points based on TGAS. Methods. Classical Cepheids were carefully selected in order to discard known or suspected binary systems. The final sample comprises 102 fundamental mode pulsators with periods ranging from 1.68 to 51.66 days (of which 33 with σ Ω /Ω < 0.5). The Type II Cepheids include a total of 26 W Virginis and BL Herculis stars spanning the period range from 1.16 to 30.00 days (of which only 7 with σ Ω /Ω < 0.5). The RR Lyrae stars include 200 sources with pulsation period ranging from 0.27 to 0.80 days (of which 112 with σ Ω /Ω < 0.5). The new relations were computed using multi-band (V,I,J,K s ) photometry and spectroscopic metal abundances available in the literature, and by applying three alternative approaches: (i) linear least-squares fitting of the absolute magnitudes inferred from direct transformation of the TGAS parallaxes; (ii) adopting astrometry-based luminosities; and (iii) using a Bayesian fitting approach. The last two methods work in parallax space where parallaxes are used directly, thus maintaining symmetrical errors and allowing negative parallaxes to be used. The TGAS-based PL,PW,PLZ, and M V - [Fe/H] relations are discussed by comparing the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud provided by different types of pulsating stars and alternative fitting methods. Results. Good agreement is found from direct comparison of the parallaxes of RR Lyrae stars for which both TGAS and HST measurements are available. Similarly, very good agreement is found between the TGAS values and the parallaxes inferred from the absolute magnitudes of Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars analysed with the Baade-Wesselink method. TGAS values also compare favourably with the parallaxes inferred by theoretical model fitting of the multi-band light curves for two of the three classical Cepheids and one RR Lyrae star, which were analysed with this technique in our samples. The K-band PL relations show the significant improvement of the TGAS parallaxes for Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars with respect to the Hipparcos measurements. This is particularly true for the RR Lyrae stars for which improvement in quality and statistics is impressive. Conclusions. TGAS parallaxes bring a significant added value to the previous Hipparcos estimates. The relations presented in this paper represent the first Gaia-calibrated relations and form a work-in-progress milestone report in the wait for Gaia-only parallaxes of which a first solution will become available with Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) in 2018. © ESO, 2017

    Gaia Data Release 1: Open cluster astrometry: performance, limitations, and future prospects

    Context. The first Gaia Data Release contains the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS). This is a subset of about 2 million stars for which, besides the position and photometry, the proper motion and parallax are calculated using Hipparcos and Tycho-2 positions in 1991.25 as prior information.Aims. We investigate the scientific potential and limitations of the TGAS component by means of the astrometric data for open clusters.Methods. Mean cluster parallax and proper motion values are derived taking into account the error correlations within the astrometric solutions for individual stars, an estimate of the internal velocity dispersion in the cluster, and, where relevant, the effects of the depth of the cluster along the line of sight. Internal consistency of the TGAS data is assessed.Results. Values given for standard uncertainties are still inaccurate and may lead to unrealistic unit-weight standard deviations of least squares solutions for cluster parameters. Reconstructed mean cluster parallax and proper motion values are generally in very good agreement with earlier HIPPARCOS-based determination, although the Gaia mean parallax for the Pleiades is a significant exception. We have no current explanation for that discrepancy. Most clusters are observed to extend to nearly 15 pc from the cluster centre, and it will be up to future Gaia releases to establish whether those potential cluster-member stars are still dynamically bound to the clusters.Conclusions. The Gaia DR1 provides the means to examine open clusters far beyond their more easily visible cores, and can provide membership assessments based on proper motions and parallaxes. A combined HR diagram shows the same features as observed before using the HIPPARCOS data, with clearly increased luminosities for older A and F dwarfs

    New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

    Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele
