    Wearable chemical sensors: characterization of heart rate electrodes using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

    Wearable monitoring systems have become very popular in the health and sports industry in recent years. Noninvasive measurements, such as speed, direction, acceleration, strain, impact and heart rate, are being utilized across countless different monitoring platforms. Heart rate monitoring is of particular interest, since this one diagnostic can provide descriptive information about the health of the user in all levels of activity. In addition, there is a recent exploration of different acquisition techniques and placement of sensors on the body in order to increase ease of use and comfort of the device. Optimizing these factors is a high priority as they will ultimately determine the extent to which device is used. However, it is important that accuracy does not suffer for the sake of comfort. Herein, a series of measurements comparing heart rate monitoring electrodes is presented. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, textile electrodes are compared to disposable Ag/AgCl electrodes. Equivalent circuit modeling is used to understand the reaction kinetics occurring within both types of electrodes and how they differ from each other. In addition, nonmotion on-body measurements are performed to observe the practical differences between the electrodes. This work will provide a foundation to assess future generations of heart rate monitoring electrodes

    Characterization of heart rate electrodes using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

    Wearable monitoring systems have flooded the health and sports industry in recent years. Heart rate monitors have taken many forms, relying on a wide variety of different measurement techniques to measure the heart rate signal.1-3 Despite these recent advancements, commercially available systems still require improvements in many aspects, including battery life, wearability and signal acquisition to become reliable monitoring systems, that meet current inpatient monitoring.4 Standard Ag/AgCl disposable monitoring electrodes rely on a reduction-oxidation reaction to produce clear, reliable electrocardiogram (ECG) signal for inpatient monitoring5, however, these electrodes are not suitable for athletic monitoring in real-time, most notably for the difficulty of use. A series of non-motion electrochemical impedance experiments were conducted in order to determine the charge transfer resistance of various types of heart rate monitoring electrodes with respect to temperature. In these experiments, a textile electrode is compared against two types of solid-gel Ag/AgCl single use monitoring electrodes, which are used as the gold standard for non-motion measurements. The test method created here will serve as a basis to evaluate future heart rate monitoring electrodes in both motion and non-motion applications. 1 http://wellograph.com/.     Detección y resolución de Problemas Relacionados con Medicamentos en un servicio de Atención Farmacéutica en Argentina

    Introducción: La Atención Farmacéutica consiste en un proceso asistencial sistemático para detectar, resolver y prevenir Problemas Relacionados con Medicamentos. El objetivo del presente trabajo es describir el número y perfil de problemas detectados y resueltos en un conjunto de pacientes adultos atendidos en una Unidad de Optimización de la Farmacoterapia en Argentina, durante un seguimiento farmacoterapéutico promedio de un año. Método: Se realizó un estudio cuasi-experimental, abierto y prospectivo en 40 pacientes ambulatorios. Se registraron las características clínicas y medicamentos, así como su adherencia o no al servicio. Se empleó la clasificación de Problemas Relacionados con Medicamentos de Minnesota, registrando su dimensión, categoría, causa, patología o condición clínica asociada, medicamento asociado, estado de riesgo, estado final y método de resolución. Resultados: Los grupos farmacoterapéuticos mayormente utilizados fueron beta-bloqueantes, estatinas, vitaminas y minerales, analgésicos, inhibidores de la bomba de protones y benzodiacepinas. Los problemas de indicación, especialmente por necesidad de farmacoterapia adicional, prevalecieron como los más frecuentes, incluyendo la falta de farmacoterapia preventiva con vacunas. Se logró resolver el 73,6% de los problemas detectados, de los cuales el 60,3% se hizo a través de informes a los médicos tratantes. El resto se pudo abordar mediante la educación al paciente, especialmente los de adherencia. Conclusiones: La Atención Farmacéutica permitió una descripción sistemática del perfil de problemas farmacológicos detectados y resueltos en un conjunto de pacientes adultos mayores ambulatorios, principalmente de sexo femenino, en el contexto de una Unidad de Optimización de la Farmacoterapia montada en un hospital universitario de Argentina

    Recommendations for enterovirus diagnostics and characterisation within and beyond Europe.

    Enteroviruses (EV) can cause severe neurological and respiratory infections, and occasionally lead to devastating outbreaks as previously demonstrated with EV-A71 and EV-D68 in Europe. However, these infections are still often underdiagnosed and EV typing data is not currently collected at European level. In order to improve EV diagnostics, collate data on severe EV infections and monitor the circulation of EV types, we have established European non-polio enterovirus network (ENPEN). First task of this cross-border network has been to ensure prompt and adequate diagnosis of these infections in Europe, and hence we present recommendations for non-polio EV detection and typing based on the consensus view of this multidisciplinary team including experts from over 20 European countries. We recommend that respiratory and stool samples in addition to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood samples are submitted for EV testing from patients with suspected neurological infections. This is vital since viruses like EV-D68 are rarely detectable in CSF or stool samples. Furthermore, reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) targeting the 5'noncoding regions (5'NCR) should be used for diagnosis of EVs due to their sensitivity, specificity and short turnaround time. Sequencing of the VP1 capsid protein gene is recommended for EV typing; EV typing cannot be based on the 5'NCR sequences due to frequent recombination events and should not rely on virus isolation. Effective and standardized laboratory diagnostics and characterisation of circulating virus strains are the first step towards effective and continuous surveillance activities, which in turn will be used to provide better estimation on EV disease burden

    Worldwide diversity of endophytic fungi and insects associated with dormant tree twigs

    International trade in plants and climate change are two of the main factors causing damaging tree pests (i.e. fungi and insects) to spread into new areas. To mitigate these risks, a large-scale assessment of tree-associated fungi and insects is needed. We present records of endophytic fungi and insects in twigs of 17 angiosperm and gymnosperm genera, from 51 locations in 32 countries worldwide. Endophytic fungi were characterized by high-throughput sequencing of 352 samples from 145 tree species in 28 countries. Insects were reared from 227 samples of 109 tree species in 18 countries and sorted into taxonomic orders and feeding guilds. Herbivorous insects were grouped into morphospecies and were identified using molecular and morphological approaches. This dataset reveals the diversity of tree-associated taxa, as it contains 12,721 fungal Amplicon Sequence Variants and 208 herbivorous insect morphospecies, sampled across broad geographic and climatic gradients and for many tree species.     Municipal distribution of breast cancer mortality among women in Spain

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Spain has one of the lowest rates of breast cancer in Europe, though estimated incidence has risen substantially in recent decades. Some years ago, the Spanish Cancer Mortality Atlas showed Spain as having a heterogeneous distribution of breast cancer mortality at a provincial level. This paper describes the municipal distribution of breast cancer mortality in Spain and its relationship with socio-economic indicators.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Breast cancer mortality was modelled using the Besag-York-Molliè autoregressive spatial model, including socio-economic level, rurality and percentage of population over 64 years of age as surrogates of reproductive and lifestyle risk factors. Municipal relative risks (RRs) were independently estimated for women aged under 50 years and for those aged 50 years and over. Maps were plotted depicting smoothed RR estimates and the distribution of the posterior probability of RR>1.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In women aged 50 years and over, mortality increased with socio-economic level, and was lower in rural areas and municipalities with higher proportion of old persons. Among women aged under 50 years, rurality was the only statistically significant explanatory variable.</p> <p>For women older than 49 years, the highest relative risks were mainly registered for municipalities located in the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, the Mediterranean coast of Catalonia and Valencia, plus others around the Ebro River. In premenopausal women, the pattern was similar but tended to be more homogeneous. In mainland Spain, a group of municipalities with high RRs were located in Andalusia, near the left bank of the Guadalquivir River.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>As previously observed in other contexts, mortality rates are positively related with socio-economic status and negatively associated with rurality and the presence of a higher proportion of people over age 64 years. Taken together, these variables represent the influence of lifestyle factors which have determined the increase in breast cancer frequency over recent decades. The results for the younger group of women suggest an attenuation of the socio-economic gradient in breast cancer mortality in Spain. The geographical variation essentially suggests the influence of other environmental variables, yet the descriptive nature of this study does not allow for the main determinants to be established.</p

    Search for Multimessenger Sources of Gravitational Waves and High-energy Neutrinos with Advanced LIGO during Its First Observing Run, ANTARES, and IceCube

    Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outflows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outflows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outflow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the Antares and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origins could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational-wave and neutrino emission processes

    Climate, host and geography shape insect and fungal communities of trees.

    Non-native pests, climate change, and their interactions are likely to alter relationships between trees and tree-associated organisms with consequences for forest health. To understand and predict such changes, factors structuring tree-associated communities need to be determined. Here, we analysed the data consisting of records of insects and fungi collected from dormant twigs from 155 tree species at 51 botanical gardens or arboreta in 32 countries. Generalized dissimilarity models revealed similar relative importance of studied climatic, host-related and geographic factors on differences in tree-associated communities. Mean annual temperature, phylogenetic distance between hosts and geographic distance between locations were the major drivers of dissimilarities. The increasing importance of high temperatures on differences in studied communities indicate that climate change could affect tree-associated organisms directly and indirectly through host range shifts. Insect and fungal communities were more similar between closely related vs. distant hosts suggesting that host range shifts may facilitate the emergence of new pests. Moreover, dissimilarities among tree-associated communities increased with geographic distance indicating that human-mediated transport may serve as a pathway of the introductions of new pests. The results of this study highlight the need to limit the establishment of tree pests and increase the resilience of forest ecosystems to changes in climate

    Minimal information for studies of extracellular vesicles 2018 (MISEV2018):a position statement of the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles and update of the MISEV2014 guidelines

    The last decade has seen a sharp increase in the number of scientific publications describing physiological and pathological functions of extracellular vesicles (EVs), a collective term covering various subtypes of cell-released, membranous structures, called exosomes, microvesicles, microparticles, ectosomes, oncosomes, apoptotic bodies, and many other names. However, specific issues arise when working with these entities, whose size and amount often make them difficult to obtain as relatively pure preparations, and to characterize properly. The International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) proposed Minimal Information for Studies of Extracellular Vesicles (“MISEV”) guidelines for the field in 2014. We now update these “MISEV2014” guidelines based on evolution of the collective knowledge in the last four years. An important point to consider is that ascribing a specific function to EVs in general, or to subtypes of EVs, requires reporting of specific information beyond mere description of function in a crude, potentially contaminated, and heterogeneous preparation. For example, claims that exosomes are endowed with exquisite and specific activities remain difficult to support experimentally, given our still limited knowledge of their specific molecular machineries of biogenesis and release, as compared with other biophysically similar EVs. The MISEV2018 guidelines include tables and outlines of suggested protocols and steps to follow to document specific EV-associated functional activities.     The Science Performance of JWST as Characterized in Commissioning

    This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. The telescope and instrument suite have demonstrated the sensitivity, stability, image quality, and spectral range that are necessary to transform our understanding of the cosmos through observations spanning from near-earth asteroids to the most distant galaxies.Comment: 5th version as accepted to PASP; 31 pages, 18 figures; https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1538-3873/acb29
