    We make the road by walking: challenging conceptualisations of leisure time for children in poverty

    In this article, we discuss a research project focusing on the ways in which children in poverty spend and experience their leisure time. We argue that the dominant conceptualisation of leisure time participation reduces poverty to a lack of social and cultural capital, marginalising poor children as passive objects of socialisation. Inspired by the interpretative paradigm of lifeworld orientation, three insights are identified throughout poor children’s experiences, which include the following: (1) challenging taken-for-granted divisions of time; (2) giving meaning to regimes of time as an on-going learning process; and (3) imagining a socially just future

    Sense of belonging is a concept that has not been researched in psychiatric nursing practice. Using a concept-analysis strategy proposed by Walker and Avant, the authors present a detalled description of the concept that evolved from a series of inductive and deductive strategies. Sense of belonging is defined as the experience of personal involvement in a system or environment so that persons feel themselves to be an integral part of that system or environment.     Effects of plant roots on soil-water retention and induced suction in vegetated soil

    Plant evapotranspiration (ET) is considered to be a hydrological effect that would induce soil suction and hence influence the stability of geotechnical infrastructure. However, other hydrological effect, such as the change of soil water retention curve (SWRC) induced by roots, is generally ignored. This study aims to investigate and compare the effects of root-induced changes in SWRC with the effects of ET on suction responses in clayey sand. Two series of laboratory tests together with 21 numerical transient seepage analyses were conducted. A tree species, Schefflera heptaphylla, which is commonly used for ecological restoration in many subtropical regions, was selected for investigation. In order to consider any effects of tree variability on induced suction, six tree individuals with similar age were tested with and without the supply of light. It is revealed that under dark condition when ET was minimal, vegetated soil could induce higher suction than bare soil by 100% after subjecting to a wetting event with a return period of 100 years. This may be explained by the increases in the air-entry value and the size of hysteresis loop induced by roots. Water balance calculation from the numerical analyses shows that even under the supply of light, the amount of ET was only 1.7% of the total volume of water infiltrated. This means that during the wetting event, the contribution of root-water uptake to induced suction in vegetated soil was relatively little, as compared with the effects of root-induced change in SWRC.     Site-specific seeding (SSS) is a precision agricultural (PA) practice aiming at optimizing seeding rate and depth, depending on the within field variability in soil fertility and yield potential. Unlike other site-specific applications, SSS was not adopted sufficiently by farmers due to some technological and practical challenges that need to be overcome. Success of site-specific application strongly depends on the accuracy of measurement of key parameters in the system, modeling and delineation of management zone maps, accurate recommendations and finally the right choice of variable rate (VR) technologies and their integrations. The current study reviews available principles and technologies for both map-based and senor-based SSS. It covers the background of crop and soil quality indicators (SQI), various soil and crop sensor technologies and recommendation approaches of map-based and sensor-based SSS applications. It also discusses the potential of socio-economic benefits of SSS against uniform seeding. The current review proposes prospective future technology synthesis for implementation of SSS in practice. A multi-sensor data fusion system, integrating proper sensor combinations, is suggested as an essential approach for putting SSS into practice
