D-Day at Bernieres-Sur-Mer: the 5th BN, Royal Berkshire Regiment

Editor’s Note: Canadian visitors to Bernieres-sur-Mer are frequently puzzled by the name of the main street leading from the beach to the village church. The signs reach “Rue Royal Berkshire Regiment.” Who were the Berkshires and why such prominence in a Canadian landing area? C.P. Stacey’s official history has no listing for the regiment. Copp and Vogel ignore them in Maple Leaf Route: Caen as does Reg Roy in 1944: The Canadians in Normandy. The British official history is almost as silent except for a single chart on “Initial Beach Organisation” which lists “8 Kings and 5 R Berks” as the Beach Groups for 7 and 8 Canadian Infantry Brigades. We are also told that “each beach group contained units of the Royal Engineers, the Royal Army Service Corps, the Royal Army Medical Corps and other specialist formations, and a specially trained battalion of infantry whose commander was the beach group commander. The main task of the infantry was to provide working parties for the specialist units... but at first most of the beach battalions were involved in fighting to subdue enemy posts which had not been cleared when the assault battalions moved inland.” (L.F. Ellis, Victory in the West, Volume 1 (London: HMSO, 1962), p.218). What follows is the D-Day story of the 5th Battalion. Royal Berkshire Regiment taken from their regimetnal history, The History of the Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of Wales’s) 1920–1947 by Brigadier Gordon Blight.

Niche Publications and Subcultural Authenticity: The case of Stealth Magazine

    Get PDF
Authenticity is often constructed as an absolute subcultural value. Within the field of subcultural studies, a relatively small amount of literature exists regarding the relationship between different forms of media and subcultural notions of authenticity. Even less literature examines the relationship that individual media texts foster with subcultural niche markets or the internal techniques such publications utilise to discuss authenticity. This thesis aims to address these gaps by performing an in-depth analysis of a Sydney-based hip hop publication, Stealth magazine. The analysis explores how subcultural authenticity is constructed within this publication. In doing so, the nature of authenticity is called into question

Effects of Collapse Settlement of Fill on Reinforced Earth Walls

    Get PDF
Two case histories illustrate the effects that collapse settlement of the fill forming a Reinforced Earth wall can have on the structure. Pre-requisites for collapse settlement are inadequate compaction, compaction at too low a water content, or a combination of these. Collapse settlement occurs subsequently when the water content of the fill is increased by infiltration. The effects of collapse settlement identified in this paper are: (i) a temporary release of friction on the reinforcing strips with the result that the wall facing moves outwards; and (ii) relative settlement between the fill and the wall facing with the result that the reinforcing strips become inclined to the horizontal and their tension increases

The influence of landfill covers on the generation of leachate

    Get PDF
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Engineering. Johannesburg, 1992World trends in the landfilling of municipal solid waste, and the design of landfill covers are reviewed. Current approaches to solving leachate problems associated with landfills emphasise the use of landfill liners and leachate collection systems. The installation of liner and leachate treatment systems is expensive. Furthermore, the lives of such systems are likely to be shorter than the time over which the landfill will continue to emit pollutants. The use of landfill covers (which are relatively cheap) to eliminate or minimise leachate production is therefore an attractive proposition. The principle behind using covers to solve leachate problems is their ability to alter the water balance of the landfill. [Abbreviated Abstract. Open document to view full version
