Measuring (KSK +/-)-K-0 interactions using pp collisions at root s=7 TeV
We present the first measurements of femtoscopic correlations between the K-S(0) and K-+/- particles in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV measured by the ALICE experiment. The observed femtoscopic correlations are consistent with final-state interactions proceeding solely via the a(0)(980) resonance. The extracted kaon source radius and correlation strength parameters for (KSK-)-K-0 are found to be equal within the experimental uncertainties to those for (KSK+)-K-0. Results of the present study are compared with those from identical-kaon femtoscopic studies also performed with pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV by ALICE and with a (KSK +/-)-K-0 measurement in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV. Combined with the Pb-Pb results, our pp analysis is found to be compatible with the interpretation of the a (980) having a tetraquark structure instead of that of a diquark. Direct photon elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV
The elliptic flow of inclusive and direct photons was measured at mid-rapidity in two centrality classes 0-20% and 20-40% in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV by ALICE. Photons were detected with the highly segmented electromagnetic calorimeter PHOS and via conversions in the detector material with the e(broken vertical bar)e pairs reconstructed in the central tracking system. The results of the two methods were combined and the direct-photon elliptic flow was extracted in the transverse momentum range 0.9 < p(T) < 6.2 GeV/c. A comparison to RHIC data shows a similar magnitude of the measured direct-photon elliptic flow. Hydrodynamic and transport model calculations are systematically lower than the data, but are found to be compatible. (C) 2018 The Author. Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe

The Star Formation History in The Far Outer Disc of M33
The outer regions of disc galaxies are becoming increasingly recognized as
key testing sites for models of disc assembly and evolution. Important issues
are the epoch at which the bulk of the stars in these regions formed and how
discs grow radially over time. To address these issues, we use Hubble Space
Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging to study the star formation
history (SFH) of two fields at 9.1 and 11.6 kpc along M33's northern major
axis. These fields lie at ~ 4 and 5 V-band disc scale-lengths and straddle the
break in M33's surface brightness profile. The colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs)
reach the ancient main sequence turnoff with a signal-to-noise ratio of ~ 5.
From detailed modelling of the CMDs, we find that the majority of stars in both
fields combined formed at z < 1. The mean age in the inner field, S1, is ~ 3
+/- 1 Gyr and the mean metallicity is [M/H] ~ -0.5 +/- 0.2 dex. The star
formation history of S1 unambiguously reveals how the inside-out growth
previously measured for M33's inner disc out to ~ 6 kpc extends out to the disc
edge at ~ 9 kpc. In comparison, the outer field, S2, is older (mean age ~ 7 +/-
2 Gyr), more metal-poor (mean [M/H] ~ -0.8 +/- 0.3 dex), and contains ~ 30
times less stellar mass. These results provide the most compelling evidence yet
that M33's age gradient reverses at large radii near the disc break and that
this reversal is accompanied by a break in stellar mass surface density. We
discuss several possible interpretations of this behaviour including radial
stellar mixing, warping of the gaseous disc, a change in star formation
efficiency, and a transition to another structural component. These results
offer one of the most detailed views yet of the peripheral regions of any disc
galaxy and provide a much-needed observational constraint on the last major
epoch of star formation in the outer disc.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted to MNRAS, hi-res version available at

Cross sections and single spin asymmetries in hadronic collisions with intrinsic transverse momentum effects
The role of intrinsic transverse momentum both in unpolarized and polarized
processes is discussed. We consider inclusive cross sections for pion
production in hadronic collisions and for Drell-Yan processes; the results are
compared with available experimental data in several different kinematical
situations. We reanalyze transverse single spin asymmetries (SSA) observed in
inclusive pion production, p(transv. polarized) p --> pion + X, in terms of
Sivers effect and show how it can be disentangled in polarized Drell-Yan
processes by suitably integrating over some final configurations. Estimates for
RHIC experiments are given.Comment: LaTeX, 8 pages, 4 ps figures, uses epsfig.sty. Talk delivered by F.

P1245 Polymorphic Variants of HSD3B1 Gene Confer Different Outcome in Specific Subgroups of Patients Infected With SARS-CoV-2
Introduction: Severe respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) uses the androgen receptor (AR), through ACE2 receptor and TMPRSS2, to enter nasal and upper airways epithelial cells. Genetic analyses revealed that HSD3B1 P1245C polymorphic variant increases dihydrotestosterone production and upregulation of TMPRSS2 with respect to P1245A variant, thus possibly influencing SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our aim was to characterize the HSD3B1 polymorphism status and its potential association with clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in Southern Switzerland. Materials and Methods: The cohort included 400 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 during the first wave between February and May 2020 in two different hospitals of Canton Ticino. Genomic DNA was extracted from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks, and HSD3B1 gene polymorphism was evaluated by Sanger sequencing. Statistical associations were verified using different test. Results: HSD3B1 polymorphic variants were not associated with a single classical factor related to worse clinical prognosis in hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2. However, in specific subgroups, HSD3B1 variants played a clinical role: intensive care unit admission was more probable in patients with P1245C diabetes compared with P1245A individuals without this comorbidity and death was more associated with hypertensive P1245A>C cases than patients with P1245A diabetes without hypertension. Discussion: This is the first study showing that HSD3B1 gene status may influence the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection. If confirmed, our results could lead to the introduction of HSD3B1 gene status analysis in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 to predict clinical outcome.
