    Predictive Second Order Sliding Control of Constrained Linear Systems with Application to Automotive Control Systems

    This paper presents a new predictive second order sliding controller (PSSC) formulation for setpoint tracking of constrained linear systems. The PSSC scheme is developed by combining the concepts of model predictive control (MPC) and second order discrete sliding mode control. In order to guarantee the feasibility of the PSSC during setpoint changes, a virtual reference variable is added to the PSSC cost function to calculate the closest admissible set point. The states of the system are then driven asymptotically to this admissible setpoint by the control action of the PSSC. The performance of the proposed PSSC is evaluated for an advanced automotive engine case study, where a high fidelity physics-based model of a reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) engine is utilized to serve as the virtual test-bed for the simulations. Considering the hard physical constraints on the RCCI engine states and control inputs, simultaneous tracking of engine load and optimal combustion phasing is a challenging objective to achieve. The simulation results of testing the proposed PSSC on the high fidelity RCCI model show that the developed predictive controller is able to track desired engine load and combustion phasing setpoints, with minimum steady state error, and no overshoot.     Direct marketing of beef in organic suckler cattle farms: economic results and impact on breeding system management

    In response to the bovine crises of 1996 and 2000, and also to the poorly structured organic beef market chain, direct marketing of beef to consumers by the farmer has developed. We studied the impact of this marketing system on economic performance and farming practices. The results show that direct marketing can generate added value, despite the extra costs. Farmers have made the necessary changes to their practices, and have adapted their herd management. Through strengthening the link between the farm and the outside world, direct marketing offers an alternative to the expansion of farms, making it possible to support a greater workforce with the same structure

    ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES ON CONSTRUCTING A COMPOSITE INDICATOR TO MEASURE AGRICULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY

    The aim of this paper is to carry out a comparative analysis of alternative methods on constructing composite indicators to measure global sustainability of the agricultural sector. This comparison is implemented empirically on the irrigated agriculture of the Duero basin (Spain) as a case study. For this purpose, this research uses a dataset of indicators previously calculated for different farm-types and policy scenarios. The results allow to establish a hierarchy of the policy scenarios on the basis of the level of sustainability achieved. Furthermore, analyzing the heterogeneity of different farms-types in each scenario, is also possible to determine the main features of the most sustainable farms in each case.     A search for millimetric emission from Gamma Ray Bursts

    We have used the 2- year Differential Microwave Radiometer data from the COsmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite to systematically search for millimetric (31 - 90 GHz) emission from the Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) GRB 3B catalog. The large beamsize of the COBE instrument (7 degs FWHM) allows for an efficient search of the large GRB positional error boxes, although it also means that fluxes from (point source) GRB objects will be somewhat diluted. A likelihood analysis has been used to look for a change in the level of millimetric emission from the locations of 81 GRB events during the first two years (1990 & 1991) of the COBE mission. The likelihood analysis determined that we did not find any significant millimetric signal before or after the occurance of the GRB. We find 95% confidence level upper limits of 175, 192 and 645 Jy or, in terms of fluxes, of 9.6, 16.3 and 54.8 10^{-13} erg/cm^2/s, respectively at 31, 53 and 90 GHz. We also look separately at different classes of GRBs, including a study of the top ten (in peak flux) GRBs, the "short burst" and "long burst" subsets, finding similar upper limits. While these limits may be somewhat higher than one would like, we estimate that using this technique with future planned missions could push these limits down to \sim 1 mJy.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, to be published in The Astrophysical Journa

    Comparative Performance of Selected Mathematical Programming Models

    This study compares the predictive performance of several mathematical programming models. Using the cropping patterns, yields and crop gross margins of eighteen farms over a period of five years we compare the models' optimum solutions with observed crop distributions after the Reform of the EU Common Agricultural Policy of 1992. The results show that the best prediction corresponds to a model that includes expected profit and a qualitative measure of crop riskiness. The results suggest that, in order to obtain reliable predictions, the modelling of farmers' responses to policy changes must consider the risk associated with any given cropping pattern. Finally, we test the ability of the proposed model to reproduce the farmers' observed behaviour with equally good performance under conditions of limited data availability.model performance, mathematical programming, modelling, decision-making, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,
