Soft Robotics: A Route to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity in Robotics
: Robotics is entering our daily lives. The discipline is increasingly crucial in fields such as agriculture, medicine, and rescue operations, impacting our food, health, and planet. At the same time, it is becoming evident that robotic research must embrace and reflect the diversity of human society to address these broad challenges effectively. In recent years, gender inclusivity has received increasing attention, but it still remains a distant goal. In addition, awareness is rising around other dimensions of diversity, including nationality, religion, and politics. Unfortunately, despite the efforts, empirical evidence shows that the field has still a long way to go before achieving a sufficient level of equality, diversity, and inclusion across these spectra. This study focuses on the soft robotics community-a growing and relatively recent subfield-and it outlines the present state of equality and diversity panorama in this discipline. The article argues that its high interdisciplinary and accessibility make it a particularly welcoming branch of robotics. We discuss the elements that make this subdiscipline an example for the broader robotic field. At the same time, we recognize that the field should still improve in several ways and become more inclusive and diverse. We propose concrete actions that we believe will contribute to achieving this goal, and provide metrics to monitor its evolution
Evaluative Event Frameworks – A Learning Destination Perspective
This paper introduces the concept of the “learning destination” as a solution to historical challenges of event evaluation. The paper evaluates its relevance and role in the development of an inclusive and strategic approach to event planning and identifies the process (and context) of the development of a strategic evaluative event framework. Using a case-study methodology, evidence is provided from a major visitor-dependent destination to support the development of a strategic Framework for the Assessment of Major Events (FAME) with recommendations advanced for its application and generalizability across other destinations

New perspectives on binding in visual working memory.
How does visual working memory (WM) store the binding between different features of a visual object (like colour, orientation, and location), and does memorizing these bindings require additional resources beyond memorizing individual features? These questions have traditionally been addressed by comparing performance across different types of change detection task. More recently, experimental tasks such as analogue (cued) recall, combined with analysis methods including Bayesian hypothesis testing and formal model comparison, have shed new light on the properties of WM. A significant new perspective is that noise in neural representation limits the precision of recall, and several recent models incorporate this view to account for failures of binding in WM. We review the literature on feature binding with a focus on these new developments and discuss their implications for the interpretation of classical findings
Vertical Heterophoria and Postural Control in Nonspecific Chronic Low Back Pain
The purpose of this study was to test postural control during quiet standing in
nonspecific chronic low back pain (LBP) subjects with vertical heterophoria (VH)
before and after cancellation of VH; also to compare with healthy subjects with,
and without VH. Fourteen subjects with LBP took part in this study. The postural
performance was measured through the center of pressure displacements with a
force platform while the subjects fixated on a target placed at either 40 or 200
cm, before and after VH cancellation with an appropriate prism. Their postural
performance was compared to that of 14 healthy subjects with VH and 12 without
VH (i.e. vertical orthophoria) studied previously in similar conditions. For LBP
subjects, cancellation of VH with a prism improved postural performance. With
respect to control subjects (with or without VH), the variance of speed of the
center of pressure was higher, suggesting more energy was needed to stabilize
their posture in quiet upright stance. Similarly to controls, LBP subjects
showed higher postural sway when they were looking at a target at a far distance
than at a close distance. The most important finding is that LBP subjects with
VH can improve their performance after prism-cancellation of their VH. We
suggest that VH reflects mild conflict between sensory and motor inputs involved
in postural control i.e. a non optimal integration of the various signals. This
could affect the performance of postural control and perhaps lead to pain.

Progress and prospects for event tourism research
This paper examines event tourism as a field of study and area of professional practice updating the previous review article published in 2008. In this substantially extended review, a deeper analysis of the field’s evolution and development is presented, charting the growth of the literature, focusing both chronologically and thematically. A framework for understanding and creating knowledge about events and tourism is presented, forming the basis which signposts established research themes and concepts and outlines future directions for research. In addition, the review article focuses on constraining and propelling forces, ontological advances, contributions from key journals, and emerging themes and issues. It also presents a roadmap for research activity in event tourism
Clientelism and corruption: Institutional adaptation of state capture strategies in view of resource scarcity in Greece
How do strategies of state capture adapt to tight fiscal conditions? The article uses a historical institutionalist approach and content analysis to study the case of Greece. Three theoretically relevant patterns of institutional adaptation are unearthed: first, limited resources for state capture do indeed trigger self-limitation initiatives as expected, but these initiatives replace costly benefits with less costly ones. Second, different forms of capture have different implications for the terms of political competition. Third, there is a mutually reinforcing relationship between clientelism and corruption, which becomes pronounced in the creative ways by which strategies of capture adjust to shifting opportunities and constraints. Clients are appointed in state offices and extract bribes directly from citizens. ‘Client corruption’ replaces extraction from the state with extraction through the state, which is less costly for the public finances: the benefit the governing party gives to its clients is the ‘right’ to extract rents for themselves
Biological heterogeneity in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension identified through unsupervised transcriptomic profiling of whole blood
Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is a rare but fatal disease diagnosed by right heart catheterisation and the exclusion of other forms of pulmonary arterial hypertension, producing a heterogeneous population with varied treatment response. Here we show unsupervised machine learning identification of three major patient subgroups that account for 92% of the cohort, each with unique whole blood transcriptomic and clinical feature signatures. These subgroups are associated with poor, moderate, and good prognosis. The poor prognosis subgroup is associated with upregulation of the ALAS2 and downregulation of several immunoglobulin genes, while the good prognosis subgroup is defined by upregulation of the bone morphogenetic protein signalling regulator NOG, and the C/C variant of HLA-DPA1/DPB1 (independently associated with survival). These findings independently validated provide evidence for the existence of 3 major subgroups (endophenotypes) within the IPAH classification, could improve risk stratification and provide molecular insights into the pathogenesis of IPAH
