Normal and Abnormal Country Growth Behavior: Country Classification and Ranking

    Get PDF
It is common to classify human behavior as normal or abnormal, but, what about economic behavior? What is a normal growth path for an economy over time? What is an erratic or eccentric growth path? In order to address these basic or primordial questions, eight possible growth states are defined. The countries in the world are classified into these growth states in each of six five-year periods beginning in 1967 and ending in 1996. Provided all the data is available, the results yield a growth path for every country with a total of five transitions from state to state. Employing the data further, conditional relative frequencies of going from one state to another are computed. The conditional relative frequencies are then used to rate the chances of a country walking down its own particular observed state growth path. Countries growth paths are then ranked from normal to abnormal for the entire thirty years based on these ratings.

Connecting the Dots: Insights into Millennial Students from Learning Research

    Get PDF
Theories about Millennial students abound, but mostly they characterize collective cultural traits of the generation, like multitalking, technosavvy or narcissism. Educators turning to these theories for guidance on how to teach this generation find little help. Part of the problem is the disconnect between generational theory and learning science. This paper aims to bridge this gap and bring learning research, in particular from the subfields of intellectual development and metacognition, into the discussion, to uncover how certain social and parenting trends have affected students’ preparation for the complex cognitive demands of college learning and to suggest specific pedagogical strategies

Interventions for Childhood Obesity: Evaluating Technological Applications Targeting Physical Activity Level and Diet

    Get PDF
Overweight and obese children have increased risks for multiple preventable diseases and conditions which can impair their physiological health and significantly increases the overall cost of their healthcare. Free mobile applications and technology for weight loss, dietary tracking, and physical activity may be quite useful for monitoring nutritional intake and exercise to facilitate weight loss. If so, nurses are well positioned to recommend such tools as part of their efforts to prevent childhood obesity and help children and parents better manage childhood obesity when it is present. However, there are no guidelines that nurses can use to determine what applications or technologies are most beneficial to children and their parents. The purpose of this project is to develop such guidelines based on a review of the scientific literature published in the last 5 years. Articles regarding healthy-lifestyle promoting mobile applications and technological approaches to health and fitness interventions were identified by searching articles indexed by CINAHL, Psychinfo, Medline, ERIC, IEEE Xplore, and Academic Search Premier. Identified articles were assessed using Melnyk’s hierarchy of evidence and organized into tables so that implications for research and suggestions for practice could be made
