Games and advertisements are resources that facilitate the teaching of a variety of relevant behaviors. Considering the problem that Brazil faces with dengue, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of government-sponsored advertisements and the “Nossa Turma Contra a Dengue” board game in promoting children’s behavior in reporting prevention rules and in behaviors corresponding to these rules. Three groups of students with 8 to 9 years old were formed: Game Group (participated in rounds of the “Nossa Turma Contra a Dengue” game), Advertisements Group (watched government advertisements on dengue prevention) and Control Group. Before and after the interventions a Dengue Questionnaire evaluated the verbal behavior about dengue prevention behaviors, and an Assessment Practical Activity evaluated nonverbal behavior. Based on the results obtained, it was possible to verify that all participants in the Game Group and the Advertising Group increased or maintained (above 80% correct answers) the score in the questionnaire and, with the exception of one participant from the Advertisements Group and one from the Control Group, all the others increased the score in the Practical Evaluation Activity. Both board game and advertising can be helpful in promoting verbal and nonverbal Dengue Prevention behaviors. However, they need to be improved regarding the clear description of disease prevention contingencies and aspects that increase children’s attention to the rules presented. Keywords: educational game, advertising campaigns, rule-governed behavior, verbal behavior, Applied Behavior Analysis.

We investigated the relative importance of technological and monetary shocks for the business cycles in the Brazilian economy between 1980 and 2009. In this investigation, we used the model money-in-the-utility function, which considers that holding money generates utility to the economic agents. Several simulations were performed to identify how the business cycles respond to shocks. The results indicate that, in addition to technological shocks, monetary shocks are important in explaining business cycles in the Brazilian economy during the analyzed period. Their effects on the volatility of real variables, however, were small.

Gravitational waves from coalescing binaries and Doppler experiments

Doppler tracking of interplanetary spacecraft provides the only method presently available for broad-band searches of low frequency gravitational waves. The instruments have a peak sensitivity around the reciprocal of the round-trip light-time T of the radio link connecting the Earth to the space-probe and therefore are particularly suitable to search for coalescing binaries containing massive black holes in galactic nuclei. A number of Doppler experiments -- the most recent involving the probes ULYSSES, GALILEO and MARS OBSERVER -- have been carried out so far; moreover, in 2002-2004 the CASSINI spacecraft will perform three 40 days data acquisition runs with expected sensitivity about twenty times better than that achieved so far. Central aims of this paper are: (i) to explore, as a function of the relevant instrumental and astrophysical parameters, the Doppler output produced by in-spiral signals -- sinusoids of increasing frequency and amplitude (the so-called chirp); (ii) to identify the most important parameter regions where to concentrate intense and dedicated data analysis; (iii) to analyze the all-sky and all-frequency sensitivity of the CASSINI's experiments, with particular emphasis on possible astrophysical targets, such as our Galactic Centre and the Virgo Cluster.Comment: 52 pages, LaTeX, 19 Postscript Figures, submitted to Phys. Quantum Fields and Extended Objects in Space-Times with Constant Curvature Spatial Section

The heat-kernel expansion and ζ\zeta-regularization techniques for quantum field theory and extended objects on curved space-times are reviewed. In particular, ultrastatic space-times with spatial section consisting in manifold with constant curvature are discussed in detail. Several mathematical results, relevant to physical applications are presented, including exact solutions of the heat-kernel equation, a simple exposition of hyperbolic geometry and an elementary derivation of the Selberg trace formula. With regards to the physical applications, the vacuum energy for scalar fields, the one-loop renormalization of a self-interacting scalar field theory on a hyperbolic space-time, with a discussion on the topological symmetry breaking, the finite temperature effects and the Bose-Einstein condensation, are considered. Some attempts to generalize the results to extended objects are also presented, including some remarks on path integral quantization, asymptotic properties of extended objects and a novel representation for the one-loop (super)string free energy.Comment: Latex file, 122 page

Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements
