    Phonon-Assisted Luminescence in Defect Centers from Many-Body Perturbation Theory

    Phonon-assisted luminescence is a key property of defect centers in semiconductors, and can be measured to perform the readout of the information stored in a quantum bit, or to detect temperature variations. The investigation of phonon-assisted luminescence usually employs phenomenological models, such as that of Huang and Rhys, with restrictive assumptions that can fail to be predictive. In this work, we predict luminescence and study exciton-phonon couplings within a rigorous many-body perturbation theory framework, an analysis that has never been performed for defect centers. In particular, we study the optical emission of the negatively charged boron vacancy in 2D hexagonal boron nitride, which currently stands out among defect centers in 2D materials thanks to its promise for applications in quantum information and quantum sensing. We show that phonons are responsible for the observed luminescence, which otherwise would be dark due to symmetry. We also show that the symmetry breaking induced by the static Jahn-Teller effect is not able to describe the presence of the experimentally observed peak at 1.5 eV

    Mise à jour des recommandations du GEFPICS pour l’évaluation du statut HER2 dans les cancers du sein en France

    En Europe, les patientes atteintes d’un cancer du sein invasif susceptibles de recevoir un traitement ciblé anti-HER2 sont actuellement sélectionnées sur la base d’un test immunohistochimique (IHC). Les techniques d’hybridation in situ (HIS) doivent être utilisées pour l’évaluation des cas IHC ambigus (2+) et pour l’étalonnage de la technique IHC. Les patientes éligibles au traitement ciblant HER2 présentent un statut HER2 positif défini par un test IHC 3+ ou un test 2+ amplifié. Une détection correcte du statut HER2 est indispensable à une utilisation optimale des thérapeutiques ciblées puisque leur efficacité est limitée aux patientes surexprimant HER2. Il est capital que l’évaluation du statut HER2 soit optimisée et fiable. Ces recommandations du groupe d’étude des facteurs pronostiques IHC dans le cancer du sein (GEFPICS) détaillent et commentent les différentes étapes des techniques IHC et HIS, les contrôles utilisables et les règles générales de l’apprentissage de la lecture. Une fois acquis, ce savoir-faire doit être pérennisé par l’observation de règles de bonnes pratiques techniques (utilisation rigoureuse de témoins internes et externes et participation régulière à des programmes d’Assurance qualité [AQ])., Summary In Europe, patients who may benefit from an HER2 targeted drug are currently selected by immunohistochemistry (IHC). In situ hybridization (ISH) techniques should be used for complementary assessment of ambiguous 2+ IHC cases and for the calibration of the IHC technique. Eligibility to an HER2 target treatment is defined by an HER2 positive status being IHC test 3+ or 2+ amplified. Reliable detection of HER2 status is essential to the appropriate usage of HER2 targeted drugs because its specificity is limited to tumors overexpressing HER2. It is essential that the IHC evaluation of the HER2 status of a mammary carcinoma is optimized and reliable. This GEFPICS’ guidelines look over the different steps of the IHC technique, the controls and, the rules for interpretation. Once acquired, this knowledge must be perpetuated by the observation of rules of good technical practice (internal and external controls, quality assurance programs)

    Simulated Milky Way analogues: implications for dark matter direct searches

    We study the implications of galaxy formation on dark matter direct detection using high resolution hydrodynamic simulations of Milky Way-like galaxies simulated within the eagle and apostle projects. We identify MilkyWay analogues that satisfy observational constraints on the Milky Way rotation curve and total stellar mass. We then extract the dark matter density and velocity distribution in the Solar neighbourhood for this set of Milky Way analogues, and use them to analyse the results of current direct detection experiments. For most Milky Way analogues, the event rates in direct detection experiments obtained from the best _t Maxwellian distribution (with peak speed of 223 { 289 km=s) are similar to those obtained directly from the simulations. As a consequence, the allowed regions and exclusion limits set by direct detection experiments in the dark matter mass and spin-independent cross section plane shift by a few GeV compared to the Standard Halo Model, at low dark matter masses. For each dark matter mass, the halo-to-halo variation of the local dark matter density results in an overall shift of the allowed regions and exclusion limits for the cross section. However, the compatibility of the possible hints for a dark matter signal from DAMA and CDMS-Si and null results from LUX and SuperCDMS is not improved

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    Retinal dysfunction in combined methylmalonic aciduria and homocystinuria (Cblc) disease: a spectrum of disorders.

    BACKGROUND: Cobalamin C methylmalonic aciduria with homocystinuria (cblC disease) is a rare hereditary inborn error of cobalamin metabolism, characterised by neurological, haematological and ophthalmological abnormalities. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three consecutive patients with Cblc disease were examined. Investigations included slit lamp and fundus examination and full-field ERG. RESULTS: A maculopathy associated with both photopic and scotopic abnormal ERG was present in two cases and a salt and pepper retinopathy with abnormal photopic ERG was detected in the third patient. CONCLUSIONS: Despite early treatment and regular metabolic controls, all our patients exhibited both retinal and ERG abnormalities. There was no correlation between funduscopic appearance and the type of photoreceptor dysfunction. A literature review disclosed a retinopathy in 29 / 70 cases with cblC disease, with an abnormal ERG in 8 of the 12 tested cases, most with retinopathy. Retinal dysfunction in cblC disease may be more frequent than previously thought, and can involve cones only or both rods and cones. We recommend a formal ocular examination with full-field ERG in patients with Cblc disease

    Introduction. L’autorité européenne de sécurité des aliments (AESA) assure que les laits de croissance « n’apportent pas de valeur supplémentaire à une alimentation équilibrée pour répondre aux besoins nutritionnels des enfants en bas âge ». Objectifs. Cette étude quantifie les modifications alimentaires minimales nécessaires pour atteindre l’adéquation nutritionnelle chez des enfants en bas âge selon leur consommation ou non de laits de croissance et/ou de compléments. Méthodologie. L’application de modèles de programmation linéaire aux données de l’enquête alimentaire nationale au Royaume Uni sur les consommations alimentaires de 1147 enfants de 12-18 mois a permis d’identifier les modifications alimentaires minimales nécessaires, d’abord en changeant uniquement les quantités des aliments déjà consommés par chaque enfant (répertoire alimentaire), puis en autorisant l’introduction de nouveaux aliments. Résultats. Le groupe d’enfants ne consommant ni laits de croissance ni compléments était majoritaire (61,6 %). Pour seulement 1% de ces enfants, il était possible d’atteindre l’adéquation nutritionnelle à partir des aliments de leur répertoire alimentaire, contre 74,4% des enfants du groupe consommant des laits de croissance et des compléments. Lorsque l’introduction de nouveaux aliments était autorisée, les changements alimentaires requis étaient moindres lorsque les laits de croissance et les compléments faisaient initialement partie du répertoire de l’enfant. Dans l’échantillon total, les principales modifications alimentaires requises étaient une augmentation du lait de croissance et une diminution du lait de vache (respectivement +226 et −181 g/jour). Conclusions. Augmenter la consommation de lait de croissance et/ou des compléments constitue la voie la plus simple de couverture des recommandations nutritionnelles de l’AESA

    Quantitative assessment of cell viability and apoptosis in cultured epidermal autografts: application to burn therapy.

    Cultured epidermal autografts (CEA) have been used in the treatment of burns for almost two decades but the clinical results are still inconsistent. In a group of 37 patients with extensive burn wounds admitted to the University Hospital of Lausanne, CEA take ranged between 10 and 100% with a mean of 65%. To investigate CEA efficacy in burns, twelve CEA preparations were tested for their biological properties with particular emphasis on the balance between cell viability and apoptosis. Apoptosis was evaluated by in situ end-labeling (TUNEL), detection of DNA fragments in CEA extracts and analysis of caspase-3 activity. All CEA samples displayed a high cell viability (> 90%) and a low apoptosis rate (< 6%). However, several biological parameters including the activity of transglutaminase showed wide interindividual variability suggesting that CEA therapeutic efficacy could be partly determined by intrinsic biological factors

    Spin states protected from intrinsic electron-phonon coupling reaching 100 ns lifetime at room temperature in MoSe₂

    We present time-resolved Kerr rotation measurements, showing spin lifetimes of over 100 ns at room temperature in monolayer MoSe. These long lifetimes are accompanied by an intriguing temperature-dependence of the Kerr amplitude, which increases with temperature up to 50 K and then abruptly switches sign. Using ab initio simulations, we explain the latter behavior in terms of the intrinsic electron-phonon coupling and the activation of transitions to secondary valleys. The phonon-assisted scattering of the photoexcited electron-hole pairs prepares a valley spin polarization within the first few ps after laser excitation. The sign of the total valley magnetization, and thus the Kerr amplitude, switches as a function of temperature, as conduction and valence band states exhibit different phonon-mediated intervalley scattering rates. However, the electron-phonon scattering on the ps time scale does not provide an explanation for the long spin lifetimes. Hence, we deduce that the initial spin polarization must be transferred into spin states, which are protected from the intrinsic electron-phonon coupling, and are most likely resident charge carriers, which are not part of the itinerant valence or conduction band states
