    Healthier and Independent Living of the Elderly: Interoperability in a Cross-Project Pilot

    The ageing of the population creates new heterogeneous challenges for age-friendly living. The progressive decline in physical and cognitive skills tends to prevent elderly people from performing basic instrumental activities of daily living and there is a growing interest in technology for aging support. Digital health today can be exercised by anyone owning a smartphone and parameters such as heart rate, step counts, calorie intake, sleep quality, can be collected and used not only to monitor and improve the individual’s health condition but also to prevent illnesses. However, for the benefits of e-health to take place, digital health data, either Electronic Health Records (EHR) or sensor data from the IoMT, must be shared, maintaining privacy and security requirements but unlocking the potential for research an innovation throughout EU. This paper demonstrates the added value of such interoperability requirements, and a form of accomplishing them through a cross-project pilot

    Estudo da viabilidade econômica de sistemas de produção agrossilvipastoris em São Carlos, SP.

    O interesse em sistemas de produção silvipastoris tem crescido no País, tanto por razões econômicas, como também por razões ambientais. O componente florestal, além de fornecer renda adicional ao produtor, confere benefícios ambientais como árvores em barreiras de quebra vento, que evitam a erosão do solo, melhoram a conservação da água, reduzem a necessidade de fertilizantes minerais para a pastagem, melhoram o conforto térmico dos animais, entre outros. Por meio do cálculo dos indicadores econômicos como a taxa interna de retorno (TIR), o valor presente líquido (VPL) e o Pay back, o presente estudo tem por objetivo apresentar a análise de viabilidade econômica para dois sistemas de produção que integram os componentes pecuária, floresta e agricultura. Os resultados indicaram a viabilidade econômica do sistema de produção agrossilvipastoril. Para esse sistema, conduziu se ainda a análise de risco do investimento por meio do método de simulação de Monte Carlo. O VPL com maior probabilidade de ocorrência foi de, aproximadamente, R$ 11.500,00, com TIR de 14%.bitstream/item/91607/1/PROCI-2013.00158.pd

    Exit and Failure of Credit Unions in Brazil: A Risk Analysis

    This study aims to investigate the factors that affect the market exit of Brazilian singular credit unions from 1995 to 2009; it also identifies and lists the determinants of various types of market exits and analyzes whether profitability is a significant factor for credit union survival. This study was conducted with accounting data provided by the Central Bank of Brazil, which derives only from individual cooperatives, i.e. singular credit unions. Quarterly financial statements from these credit unions that were active from 1995 to the second quarter of 2009 were employed, totaling 71,325 observations for 1,929 credit unions. Based on survival and the model of competing risks (such as the Cox, Exponential, Weibull, Gompertz, and Competing Risk models), the results show that there is no statistical evidence to ensure a correlation between profitability and credit union survival. The results also suggest that the size of credit unions plays a key role in their survival and longevity and that their funding and investment management are related to their survival and risk of market exit. In conclusion, the results confirm the initial idea that the duality inherent to credit unions - cooperative principles versus economic efficiency - might influence the stability, survival, and longevity of these institutions. Such results may also imply that a credit union embracing the rationale of a private bank will become more estranged from its members, something which will hinder its future operations and increase the likelihood of its exit from the market

    Cystinosis: practical tools for diagnosis and treatment

    Cystinosis is the major cause of inherited Fanconi syndrome, and should be suspected in young children with failure to thrive and signs of renal proximal tubular damage. The diagnosis can be missed in infants, because not all signs of renal Fanconi syndrome are present during the first months of life. In older patients cystinosis can mimic idiopathic nephrotic syndrome due to focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis. Measuring elevated white blood cell cystine content is the corner stone for the diagnosis. The diagnosis is confirmed by molecular analysis of the cystinosin gene. Corneal cystine crystals are invariably present in all patients with cystinosis after the age of 1 year. Treatment with the cystine depleting drug cysteamine should be initiated as soon as possible and continued lifelong to prolong renal function survival and protect extra-renal organs. This educational feature provides practical tools for the diagnosis and treatment of cystinosis

    The Cell Adhesion Molecule “CAR” and Sialic Acid on Human Erythrocytes Influence Adenovirus In Vivo Biodistribution

    Although it has been known for 50 years that adenoviruses (Ads) interact with erythrocytes ex vivo, the molecular and structural basis for this interaction, which has been serendipitously exploited for diagnostic tests, is unknown. In this study, we characterized the interaction between erythrocytes and unrelated Ad serotypes, human 5 (HAd5) and 37 (HAd37), and canine 2 (CAV-2). While these serotypes agglutinate human erythrocytes, they use different receptors, have different tropisms and/or infect different species. Using molecular, biochemical, structural and transgenic animal-based analyses, we found that the primary erythrocyte interaction domain for HAd37 is its sialic acid binding site, while CAV-2 binding depends on at least three factors: electrostatic interactions, sialic acid binding and, unexpectedly, binding to the coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) on human erythrocytes. We show that the presence of CAR on erythrocytes leads to prolonged in vivo blood half-life and significantly reduced liver infection when a CAR-tropic Ad is injected intravenously. This study provides i) a molecular and structural rationale for Ad–erythrocyte interactions, ii) a basis to improve vector-mediated gene transfer and iii) a mechanism that may explain the biodistribution and pathogenic inconsistencies found between human and animal models

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    Dealing with Open Issues and Unmet Needs in Healthcare Through Ontology Matching and Federated Learning

    Open issues and unmet needs in healthcare include the enhancement of the statistical power of the clinical outcomes along with the development of prediction models for effective disease management, the detection of prominent factors for disease progression and the identification of targeted therapies. In this work, we deploy a computational pipeline that uses data curation and ontology matching to curate and align heterogeneous data structures to enhance the statistical power of the outcomes. Then, we use federated learning to develop disease prediction models across harmonized cohort data that are stored in private cloud databases. A preliminary case study was conducted for the first time on three European cohorts on primary Sj\uf6gren\u2019s Syndrome (pSS) yielding harmonized data with 90% average overlap along with a federated lymphomagenesis progression model with accuracy 0.848, sensitivity 0.833 and specificity 0.849

    Light emission efficiency and imaging performance of Y3Al5O12: Ce (YAG : Ce) powder screens under diagnostic radiology conditions

    In this study Y3Al5O12: Ce powder scintillator was evaluated for use in X-ray imaging detectors. This phosphor, also known as YAG: Ce scintillator or P-46 phosphor, is a non-hygroscopic, emitting green light with very short decay time. These properties are very attractive for X-ray imaging. Y3Al5O12: Ce powder was used to prepare various test screens ( 33 - 166 mg/cm(2)). Absolute luminescence efficiency measurements were performed for various X-ray tube voltages ( 50 - 130 kVp). In addition parameters related to image quality such as the modulation transfer function and the detective quantum efficiency were examined. A theoretical model, describing radiation and light transfer, was employed to fit experimental data and to estimate values of optical parameters. Absolute efficiency was found to decrease with X-ray tube voltage. Highest efficiency was obtained for the 107 mg/cm(2) screen. Light attenuation coefficients were close to those of green emitting rare earth scintillators. At low spatial frequencies the detective quantum efficiency was high for the 107 - 166 mg/cm(2) screens. The light emission efficiency and imaging performance of Y3Al5O12: Ce was not better than currently employed scintillators. However due to its very fast response and high spectral compatibility to optical sensors it may be considered for use in digital imaging detectors
