Jacinto Octavio Picón y el reto de la verosimilitud

Jacinto Octavio Picon’s (1852-1923) early approach to naturalism leaves a great preoccupation with verisimilitude in his novels and short stories, which is the first and main condition of Émile Zola’s literary principles. This trend is very present in Picon’s work despite also receiving the influx of the French roman romanesque from the early 90’s onwards. Throughout all his production, the writer from Madrid will showcase an extraordinary care in making his work feel very real and avoid even such things based in reality that could come across as unreal: the appearance of idealistic characters or dreamers and other fantastic elements, the justification of randomness, the absolute rigor in the point of view…, constitute some of the characteristics of Picon’s narrative work.La temprana adscripción al naturalismo del narrador madrileño Jacinto Octavio Picón (1852- 1923) deja en sus novelas y cuentos una extraordinaria preocupación por la verosimilitud, condición primera y principal de la narrativa según los planteamientos de Émile Zola, y ello no obstante el influjo que sobre el autor ejerce la nueva novela novelesca, también de procedencia francesa, a partir de los primeros años noventa. A lo largo de toda su producción, Picón presentará un cuidado extremo en no sucumbir a la inverosimilitud o a aquello que aun basándose en lo real pudiera parecer inverosímil: la advertencia de la aparición de personajes idealistas o soñadores y de otros aspectos novelescos del relato, la justificación de lo casual o azaroso, el rigor absoluto en el punto de vista…, constituyen algunas de las facetas que fundamentan la práctica narrativa del autor madrileño

Clarín y Picón: del desencuentro a la amistad

The study of the interactions between authors sheds some light on several aspects of their lives. That is the case of the barely studied relationship between Leopoldo Alas and Jacinto Octavio Picón, two writers with parallel existences in personal and literary terms. Picón was the first target of Alas' biting satire, to which Picón responded with modesty and caution. However, following these tense first steps, their relationship changed due to two key events in Clarín's life and Picon's reaction to both of them; the death of Clarín's father and the publication of La Regenta fostered a reconciliation that eventually transformed the initial disputes into a warm friendship.El conocimiento del trato entre escritores desvela a veces momentos significativos de su vida y facetas relevantes de su personalidad. Así ocurre en el caso de la relación, hasta hoy apenas estudiada, entre Leopoldo Alas y Jacinto Octavio Picón, dos autores rigurosamente coetáneos, con una trayectoria y una obra paralelas en más de un aspecto. Corresponderá a Picón el dudoso honor de ser el primer blanco de la sátira mordaz del joven Alas, que se ensañará con quien, sin embargo, le replicará modesta y mesuradamente. La reacción de Picón ante sendos hechos trascendentales de la vida personal y la carrera literaria de Clarín, la muerte de su padre y la publicación de La Regenta, favorecerá un acercamiento que acabará por vencer las muchas reticencias de Alas, hasta alcanzar una sincera amistad en los años finales de la vida del asturiano

Photography-based taxonomy is inadequate, unnecessary, and potentially harmful for biological sciences

The question whether taxonomic descriptions naming new animal species without type specimen(s) deposited in collections should be accepted for publication by scientific journals and allowed by the Code has already been discussed in Zootaxa (Dubois & Nemésio 2007; Donegan 2008, 2009; Nemésio 2009a–b; Dubois 2009; Gentile & Snell 2009; Minelli 2009; Cianferoni & Bartolozzi 2016; Amorim et al. 2016). This question was again raised in a letter supported by 35 signatories published in the journal Nature (Pape et al. 2016) on 15 September 2016. On 25 September 2016, the following rebuttal (strictly limited to 300 words as per the editorial rules of Nature) was submitted to Nature, which on 18 October 2016 refused to publish it. As we think this problem is a very important one for zoological taxonomy, this text is published here exactly as submitted to Nature, followed by the list of the 493 taxonomists and collection-based researchers who signed it in the short time span from 20 September to 6 October 2016

Heterogeneous contributions of change in population distribution of body mass index to change in obesity and underweight NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC)

From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. In East and Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the underweight tail of the BMI distribution was left behind as the distribution shifted. There is a need for policies that address all forms of malnutrition by making healthy foods accessible and affordable, while restricting unhealthy foods through fiscal and regulatory restrictions

Jacinto Octavio Picón (Madrid, 1852-1923) is one of the main writers whose posthumous recognition has remained not only well under the effective value of his literary work, but also below the consideration that his narrative deserved in his time. La escasa atención crítica a las conexiones entre la narrativa de Cela y la novelística de Galdós parece del todo infundada en el caso de dos de sus respectivas obras maestras, Fortunata y Jacinta y La wlmena. Un cotejo entre ambas novelas lleva a establecer no sólo claros paralelismos en el tratamiento de los personajes, el tiempo y el espacio, sino a postular una indudable relación intertextual, especialmente a partir del recinto del café y del motivo de la colmena
