    Pancytopenýa and Sepsýs due to Meropenem: A Case Report

    Meropenem is one of the most commonly used antibacterial agents with relatively few side effects. Serious adverse reactions reported with meropenem are rare with an incidence of 1 %. Recently we came across two rare adverse effects of meropenem in one patient with acute renal failure. There was pancytopenia and sepsis, respectively. To the best of ourknowledge, a only few cases have been reported in the literature that document an association between meropenem administration and pancytopenia, and about half of these cases were sepsis. With the use of meropenem becoming more widespread, these two rare but fatal complications of meropenem should be borne in mind.Keywords: Meropenem, Pancytopenia, Sepsis, Fatal complication

    MnOx-Promoted PdAg Alloy Nanoparticles for the Additive-Free Dehydrogenation of Formic Acid at Room Temperature

    Formic acid (HCOOH) has a great potential as a safe and a convenient hydrogen carrier for fuel cell applications. However, efficient and CO-free hydrogen production through the decomposition of formic acid at low temperatures (<363 K) in the absence of additives constitutes a major challenge. Herein, we present a new heterogeneous catalyst system composed of bimetallic PdAg alloy and MnOx nanoparticles supported on amine-grafted silica facilitating the liberation of hydrogen at room temperature through the dehydrogenation of formic acid in the absence of any additives with remarkable activity (330 mol H2·mol catalyst-1·h-1) and selectivity (>99%) at complete conversion (>99%). Moreover this new catalytic system enables facile catalyst recovery and very high stability against agglomeration, leaching, and CO poisoning. Through a comprehensive set of structural and functional characterization experiments, mechanistic origins of the unusually high catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability of this unique catalytic system are elucidated. Current heterogeneous catalytic architecture presents itself as an excellent contender for clean hydrogen production via room-temperature additive-free dehydrogenation of formic acid for on-board hydrogen fuel cell applications. © 2015 American Chemical Society

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    Topical atorvastatin in the treatment of diabetic wounds

    PubMed ID: 19667969BACKGROUND: Currently, it is reported that statins may be useful in the treatment of diabetes mellitus foot ulceration. The aim of this study was to evaluate treatment of the wounds in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats with local atorvastatin. METHODS: Two 15 × 15 mm-sized wounds were created in 28 streptozotocin-induced rats. A total of 56 diabetic wounds were studied in 8 groups (n = 7). No treatment was administered in the first and second groups, which lasted for 7 and 14 days, respectively. Third and fourth groups consisted of diabetic rats that were administered 1:1 mixture of lanolin and vaseline therapy for 7 and 14 days, respectively. One percent statin plus 1:1 mixture of lanolin and vaseline was used in the fifth and sixth groups for 7 and 14 days, respectively; and in seventh and eighth groups, 5% statin plus 1:1 mixture of lanolin and vaseline therapy was used for 7 and 14 days, respectively. On the 7th and 14th days, state of the wound healing was observed, and the percent of wound healing was determined by measuring its size and by performing a histopathologic study. The statistical analyses were performed by Mann-Whitney U test, using SPSS 14.0 software. RESULTS: On the 14th day, the rates of wound healing in the first, second, third, and fourth groups were 14%, 40%, 96.59%, and 96.51%, respectively. This ratio was calculated by the formula healing ratio (%) = 100 × (1-wound area/initial wound area). Accordingly, in the multiple comparisons, the rates of wound healing were found to be significantly higher in the diabetic rat groups administered 1% and 5% atorvastatin compared with those administered a mixture of lanolin-vaseline and the untreated group (for comparison each one P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Local atorvastatin therapy may be useful for healing the wounds in diabetic rats. Further clinical and experimental studies are needed to confirm these results. © Copyright 2009 Southern Society for Clinical Investigation

    Radiological and Functional Comparison of Single-Bundle Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: Transtibial Versus Anteromedial Technique

    Background/aim: This study aimed to compare radiological and functional outcomes of patients who had single-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with autologous hamstring tendon grafts using transtibial (TT) versus anteromedial (AM) femoral tunnel drilling techniques. Materials and methods: Sixty patients who had been operated on between 2010 and 2013 were enrolled in this study. Tunnel positions and widenings in the femur and tibia were evaluated with radiographs, arthrometric measurements with a Rolimeter arthrometer (Aircast, Summit, NJ, USA), stability assessment with Lachman and reverse pivot shift tests, and functional assessment with the International Knee Documentation Committee and Tegner and Lysholm scoring systems. Results: Tunnel enlargement in the sagittal and coronal planes of the femur was higher with the TT technique (P < 0.0001) and that of the coronal planes of the tibia was also higher with the TT technique (P = 0.01). During the assessment with the Rolimeter, the difference between sides was significant with the TT technique (P = 0.013). Positive results of the Lachman and reverse pivot shift tests were more frequent with the TT technique (P < 0.05), and the Lysholm scores were higher with the AM technique (P = 0.001). Conclusion: ACL reconstruction with hamstring autografts by either TT or AM technique demonstrated similar and excellent results in terms of functional outcomes at the end of the first postoperative year. The TT group had increased tunnel enlargement, which may have uncertain long-term outcomes, compared with the AM group.WoSScopu
