The Shrine in the praesidium of Dios (Eastern Desert of Egypt): Graffiti and Oracles in Context
In 2009, a remarkably preserved shrine was discovered in the Dios fortlet, dedicated to Zeus Helios Megas Sarapis and the Tyche of the praesidium. Archaeological data and several inscriptions found in the fort show that this shrine, built at the earliest after the reign of Antoninus Pius, is not the original aedes of the praesidium. The Greek and Latin graffiti left in the shrine by visitors are published, as well as a small collection of oracular answers on ostraca, found in the filling of the podium on which the cultstatues were placed. The latter texts are akin, in their style and contents, to the astragaloi-oracles from South-Western Asia Minor.
In P.Mich. XX 800 (354 AD), a contract for river transport, a ÎșÏ
ÎČΔÏÎœÎźÏÎ·Ï declares under oath that he has received a cargo of taxable wheat, which he undertakes to deliver without damage to Alexandria. This contract is the only one to mention, by the term λÎčÏÏÎčÏÎŒÏÏ, the act of weighing the wheat, and to indicate how much 1 sextarius of wheat weighed. The publishers, who consider this one of the weighing operations known to have been carried out in Alexandria, do not understand why it intervenes in the declaratory part of the oath, giving the impression that this λÎčÏÏÎčÏÎŒÏÏ took place when the wheat was loaded in the chĂŽra. Some papyri of the Imperial period in fact show that there was indeed a weighing at the time of the departure of a grain transport, and that a sample was taken then. This weighing which, according to P.Mich. 800, focused on 1 sextarius, aimed at controlling the quality of the wheat (wet, diseased or mixed wheat would not have had the standard weight). The λÎčÏÏÎčÏÎŒÏÏ of a sextarius mentioned in the papyrus further suggests a new interpretation for the late-antique inscription from the horreum of Andriake (388â392 AD), which commemorates the installation in this granary of ÎŒÎÏÏα Îșα᜶ ÏÏÎ±ÎžÎŒÎŹ made on the model of standard measures sent for this purpose by the praefectus praetorio orientis. The names of some of these weights and measurements have given rise to various interpretations: besides ÎŒÏÎŽÎčÎżÎč (modii) and ΟÎÏÏαÎč (sextarii), two ÏÏαγÎλλÎčα ÏÎčΎαÏ៶ (sic) and three αáœÎłÎżÏÏÏÎčαwere made and are curiously associated with sextarii (Ο(áœłÏÏαÎč) ÏᜱλÎșΔοÎč ÎČ áŒÏÎżÎœÏÎ”Ï ÏÏ᜷α αáœÎłÎżáœ»ÏÏÎčα). To understand this, we must return to the actual reading on the stone, ÏÏÎčÏαÏ
γοÏÏÏÎčα, unduly corrected by the editors to read ÏÏία αáœÎłÎżÏÏÏÎčα. These trisaugustea were official weights authenticated with the triple image of the emperor that would have to be combined with each of the two sextarii to allow the λÎčÏÏÎčÏÎŒÏÏ to proceed (there are two sextarii, because these copies of standard measures were destined to go to two different places). As for the two ÏÏαγÎλλÎčα ÏÎčΎαÏ៶, it is very tempting to associate them with the no less controversial regulae ferreae of the inscription of the navicularii from Arles, CIL III 14165 (198â202 AD). Rather than considering these as measurements of length intended for the verification of the height and diameter of the capacity measures, this article proposes a return to the interpretation proposed by Waltzing for the regulae ferreae: in his view, these were scrapers used to shave excess wheat off the top of the measure.tbaDans le connaissement fluvial P.Mich.
Edition of a private letter on an ostracon, found in the praesidium of Dios (on the way from Koptos to Berenike) and stratigraphically dated to the 2nd cent. AD (reign of Hadrian or Antoninus). The author, writing from a neighbouring fort, informs his correspondent that the prefect of Egypt has sent back 150 elder men from Kaine and has given orders that the remainder shall receive a «seal» on their left hand (or arm) resembling a wheel so that «they shall not fear the iron». What of the status of these dismissed men and the two correspondents? It is most likely that they were military men and that the seal was in fact a tattoo.Ădition dâune lettre privĂ©e sur ostracon trouvĂ©e au praesidium de Dios (sur la route de Koptos Ă BĂ©rĂ©nice) et datant du IIe s. apr.
A Greek ostracon, recently found at the praesidium Dios (Iovis in the Itin. Ant.) in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, has made it necessary to rethink the place in the equestrian career occupied by the praefectura of Berenice. The text of the ostracon is a report of activities combined with a demand for workers and tools written by the âčoverseer of wellsâș to Sulpicius Serenus, procurator Augusti. Sulpicius Serenus is already known by two inscriptions, one being I.Memnon 20, where his function after the three militae equestres is in lacuna. The other one is I.Pan 87, where he commemorates his victory over the nomadic tribe of the Agriophagi, but does not mention his title. There are numerous clues that his procuratorship is, in fact, the praefectura of Berenice. A prosopographic table of the prefects of Berenice, taking into account unpublished material from the praesidium of Didymoi, is appended. Regio- and stereoselective microwave-assisted synthesis of 5-alkyl-4-alkenyl-4-phenyl-1,3-oxazolidin-2-ones
Chiral symmetrical alk-2-yne-1,4-diols have been stereoselectively transformed into 5-alkyl-4-alkenyl-4-phenyl-1,3-oxazolidin- 2-ones, which are precursors of quaternary α-amino ÎČ-hydroxy acids. The key step was the cyclization of the bis(tosylcarbamates) of 2- phenylalk-2-yne-1,4-diols, easily obtained from the starting chiral diols. These cyclizations were accomplished with complete regioselectivity and up to 92:8 dr in the presence of catalytic amounts of Ni(0) or Pd (II) derivatives under microwave heating
Super-heavy fermion material as metallic refrigerant for adiabatic demagnetization cooling
Low-temperature refrigeration is of crucial importance in fundamental
research of condensed matter physics, as the investigations of fascinating
quantum phenomena, such as superconductivity, superfluidity and quantum
criticality, often require refrigeration down to very low temperatures.
Currently, cryogenic refrigerators with He gas are widely used for cooling
below 1 Kelvin. However, usage of the gas is being increasingly difficult due
to the current world-wide shortage. Therefore, it is important to consider
alternative methods of refrigeration. Here, we show that a new type of
refrigerant, super-heavy electron metal, YbCoZn, can be used for
adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration, which does not require 3He gas. A
number of advantages includes much better metallic thermal conductivity
compared to the conventional insulating refrigerants. We also demonstrate that
the cooling performance is optimized in YbScCoZn by
partial Sc substitution with 0.19. The substitution induces chemical
pressure which drives the materials close to a zero-field quantum critical
point. This leads to an additional enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect in
low fields and low temperatures enabling final temperatures well below 100 mK.
Such performance has up to now been restricted to insulators. Since nearly a
century the same principle of using local magnetic moments has been applied for
adiabatic demagnetization cooling. This study opens new possibilities of using
itinerant magnetic moments for the cryogen-free refrigeration
