Pregrad
Youth in livestock, the engine for change: strategic partnerships with a private company (CIAT/CCAFS-Alqueria): The beginnings, incentives, and objectives of the Herederos de Tradición (Heirs of Tradition) initiative carried out by AlquerÃa’s farmer training programs.
In 2012, the private dairy company AlquerÃa launched its first pilot training program for small-scale milk producers, MACA. The name MACA derives from the pilot’s initial test region in the municipalities near the Macarena mountain range in El Meta, Colombia. This particular area has been identified for the urgent need to tackle the low rates of schooling of its producers, and the need for a technification of the livestock farms to increase their productivity and, in turn, the quality of life of their managers.
Optimizing a Simple Natural Dye Production Method for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: Examples for Betalain (Bougainvillea and Beetroot Extracts) and Anthocyanin Dyes
We present a study about the sensitizers extracted from natural resources. This paper focuses on how to select, extract and characterize natural dyes, giving some guides to establish a protocol for the whole process of fabricating and using these dyes. The influence of the extraction solvent and method, and of parameters such as pH are analyzed. Also, dye precursor and dye extract stability have been studied, as well as how the dye adsorbs onto substrates and the effect of mixing or concentrating the extracts. Results concerning betalain pigments present in bougainvillea and beetroot extracts, and anthocyanins in eggplant extracts, analyzed by using UV-Vis spectrometry, are included. As an example of application, we report procedures intended to test and enhance the dye potential as a main component of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). DSSCs mimic nature’s photosynthesis and have some advantages like an easy and low-cost fabrication procedure. Their efficiency depends on its design and fabrication process and also on the different components involved. Hence, optimizing each component is essential to achieve the best performance, and thus the dye used as a sensitizer is crucial. We fabricate cells by using a simple procedure: As the interest is focused on the sensitizer, the same consecutive steps are followed, varying only the dye extract. Among all the natural-dyes tested, beetroot extract reaches up to 0.47% cell efficiency, which is near the highest values found in literature for this pigment
The Asymptotic Behavior of the Composition of Firmly Nonexpansive Mappings
In this paper we provide a unified treatment of some convex minimization
problems, which allows for a better understanding and, in some cases,
improvement of results in this direction proved recently in spaces of curvature
bounded above. For this purpose, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of
compositions of finitely many firmly nonexpansive mappings in the setting of
-uniformly convex geodesic spaces focusing on asymptotic regularity and
convergence results
Calibrated forceps model of spinal cord compression injury.
Compression injuries of the murine spinal cord are valuable animal models for the study of spinal cord injury (SCI) and spinal regenerative therapy. The calibrated forceps model of compression injury is a convenient, low cost, and very reproducible animal model for SCI. We used a pair of modified forceps in accordance with the method published by Plemel et al. (2008) to laterally compress the spinal cord to a distance of 0.35 mm. In this video, we will demonstrate a dorsal laminectomy to expose the spinal cord, followed by compression of the spinal cord with the modified forceps. In the video, we will also address issues related to the care of paraplegic laboratory animals. This injury model produces mice that exhibit impairment in sensation, as well as impaired hindlimb locomotor function. Furthermore, this method of injury produces consistent aberrations in the pathology of the SCI, as determined by immunohistochemical methods. After watching this video, viewers should be able to determine the necessary supplies and methods for producing SCI of various severities in the mouse for studies on SCI and/or treatments designed to mitigate impairment after injury
