    Effects of wearable therapies on jump performance in sport horses

    IntroductionFailure to properly prepare the equine athlete for exercise and support post-exercise recovery is a contributing factor to physical breakdown and lameness. Equine physiotherapy was not introduced until the early twentieth century and has since evolved to allow for wearable therapies such as therapeutic boots to be accessible to a broad spectrum of equestrians. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of ceramic boots, boots combining vibration and cryotherapy, and boots containing tourmaline on the performance of sport horses during jumping as well as to examine changes in vital signs in response to treatment.MethodsEight healthy horses received the 3 therapeutic boot treatments or a control (no boot) in a Latin square experiment for a period of 5 days each. Horses performed approximately 10 min of exercise through a jump chute for the 5 consecutive days and jump performance parameters were recorded during each exercise session. Therapeutics were applied in the morning prior to exercise per the manufacturer’s recommendation and were removed only for exercise.Results and DiscussionIn a Bayesian network analysis, changes in vital signs (heart rate, respiration, and temperature) were driven by individual animal, rather than boot treatment. Jump performance was influenced by boot treatment, physiological measurements, and individual animal. Therapeutic boots were associated with changes in conditional probabilities of numerous performance outcomes. This study indicates the use of wearable therapies may result in improved performance outcomes of sport horses in jumping exercises

    Brief research report: Photoplethysmography pulse sensors designed to detect human heart rates are ineffective at measuring horse heart rates

    This study sought to evaluate the accuracy of a PPG (photoplethysmography) sensor designed to measure human heart rates in monitoring the distal limb pulse of healthy adult horses. We hypothesized that the PPG sensor is sensitive to placement location and orientation, and that measurement accuracies depend on placement and orientation on the limb. To evaluate this hypothesis, a completely randomized block design with a factorial treatment structure was used. Horses were considered as the block. Limb type (right front, left front, right hind, and left hind) and position of sensor (medial or lateral) were treatments, with levels arranged in a complete (4x2) factorial design. Data were collected by placing the PPG sensor on the limb of each horse (n = 6), with placement location according to the treatment (limb type and location) combination, and taking pulse readings for 60 seconds. Manual heart rates were collected concurrently using a stethoscope. Data were analyzed by calculating root mean square errors (RMSE) for the PPG measurements with the manual heart rates as a gold standard. Variation in RMSE associated with limb and location of sensor were evaluated using a general linear model with fixed effects for limb and location and a random effect for horse. Our results indicated that the PPG sensor was ineffective at measuring horse heart rates, and that the device was insensitive to placement location and orientation. Future work should focus on developing alternative analytics to interpret the data from PPG sensors to better reflect horse heart rates

    Evaluation of a rumen modifier to limit pellet intake in beef brood cows

    Winter supplementation of gestating beef cows is often necessary to ensure energy and protein requirements remain satisfied. However, it is difficult to prevent over- or under-consumption by individual animals fed in a group. The objective of this study was to evaluate the intake limiting effects of 3 levels of tea saponin (TS) on pelleted feed consumption when compared with a TS-free control treatment. Commercial beef cows in late gestation (n = 24) were allocated to 1 of 4 treatments delivered via a pelleted feed supplement: 0% (A), 0.16% (B), 0.32% (C), or 0.64% (D) TS on a dry matter basis. Cows were assigned so that initial mean body weights and body condition scores were similar among treatment groups. Supplement was delivered once daily via Calan gates at a rate of 2.5% of BW for 42 days. Refusals were collected daily to calculate intake. Treatment differences were observed for pellet DMI, cow BW, and cow BCS (P < 0.0001). Cow hay intake, calf birth weight, and calf weaning weight were unaffected by treatment (P > 0.05). Dry matter intake of pellets as a percent of BW (DMIBW) was significantly different for all treatments (P < 0.0001) with intake declining as TS content increased. Considerable variability in DMIBW of all treatments was observed from day 0 to 15 but intakes plateaued between 1.75 and 2.5% DMIBW for the remainder of the trial with Treatment D intake remaining noticeably lower than the other treatments. Treatment D was found to be successful at limiting pellet intake to an average DMIBW of 1.51%. This study concluded that short-term pellet intake can be limited by inclusion of TS, highlighting it as a potential intake limiter product for beef cattle producers

    Effect of dietary energy source on pregnancy rates and reproductive physiology of pastured beef heifers

    Proper production of steroid hormones, such as progesterone (P4), is essential for maintenance of pregnancy. Provision of gluconeogenic substrates from the diet may alter postabsorptive energy supplies and associated hormone signaling in a manner supportive of elevating P4 concentrations. Crossbred Angus heifers (n=27) were balanced for pre-trial bodyweight (BW) and body condition score (BCS), then assigned to isoenergetic diets leveraging starch (ES) or fat (EF) as the primary source of energy (45.7% starch vs 11.5% fat). The heifers were placed on the assigned diets 8 days prior to the initiation of estrous synchronization and continued the diets through the second pregnancy diagnosis, 52 days after the initial insemination. On day 28 post-breeding, pregnancy status was diagnosed via ultrasonography. Measurements of follicle size and number were collected via rectal palpation and ultrasonography on days −10, −8, −4, and day 0 relative to breeding. Blood samples were collected on days −10, 1 through 7, 10, 14, 18, 21, 24, and 28 to analyze plasma for P4 concentrations and placental-associated glycoprotein (PAG) concentrations. Data were analyzed using a linear mixed effects model with a fixed effect for treatment and a random effect for pen. Observations collected over time were analyzed using a repeated measures approach with fixed effects for treatment, time, initial condition, and a random effect for pen. Interactions between treatment and pregnancy status were also tested for PAG and P4 concentrations. No treatment differences were observed in final BCS (P=0.12) and total dry matter intake (DMI; P=0.51), though heifers on the ES treatment tended to reach an increased BW (P=0.10). Although heifers fed ES diets had numerically higher conception rates compared to heifers fed EF diets (71.4% vs. 66.7%), there was no statistically significant difference. Furthermore, there were no significant differences observed among diets in terms of pregnancy outcomes, follicle size, or number. A treatment by pregnancy status interaction was detected for both PAG and P4 concentrations. These results suggest that short-term dietary starch supplementation provided around the time of breeding can result in shifts to reproductive hormone abundance that may be conducive for pregnancy establishment

    TRY plant trait database – enhanced coverage and open access

    Plant traits - the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants - determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait‐based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits - almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    Supporting shared decision making for older people with multiple health and social care needs: a realist synthesis

    Background: Health care systems are increasingly moving towards more integrated approaches. Shared decision making (SDM) is central to these models but may be complicated by the need to negotiate and communicate decisions between multiple providers, as well as patients and their family carers; particularly for older people with complex needs. The aim of this review was to provide a context relevant understanding of how interventions to facilitate SDM might work for older people with multiple health and care needs, and how they might be applied in integrated care models. Methods: Iterative, stakeholder driven, realist synthesis following RAMESES publication standards. It involved: 1) scoping literature and stakeholder interviews (n-13) to develop initial programme theory/ies, 2) systematic searches for evidence to test and develop the theories, and 3) validation of programme theory/ies with stakeholders (n=11). We searched PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Scopus, Google, Google Scholar, and undertook lateral searches. All types of evidence were included. Results: We included 88 papers; 29 focused on older people or people with complex needs. We identified four context-mechanism-outcome configurations that together provide an account of what needs to be in place for SDM to work for older people with complex needs. This includes: understanding and assessing patient and carer values and capacity to access and use care, organising systems to support and prioritise SDM, supporting and preparing patients and family carers to engage in SDM and a person-centred culture of which SDM is a part. Programmes likely to be successful in promoting SDM are those that allow older people to feel that they are respected and understood, and that engender confidence to engage in SDM. Conclusions: To embed SDM in practice requires a radical shift from a biomedical focus to a more person-centred ethos. Service providers will need support to change their professional behaviour and to better organise and deliver services. Face to face interactions, permission and space to discuss options, and continuity of patient-professional relationships are key in supporting older people with complex needs to engage in SDM. Future research needs to focus on inter-professional approaches to SDM and how families and carers are involved

    This study sought to evaluate the accuracy of a PPG (photoplethysmography) sensor designed to measure human heart rates in monitoring the distal limb pulse of healthy adult horses. We hypothesized that the PPG sensor is sensitive to placement location and orientation, and that measurement accuracies depend on placement and orientation on the limb. To evaluate this hypothesis, a completely randomized block design with a factorial treatment structure was used. Horses were considered as the block. Limb type (right front, left front, right hind, and left hind) and position of sensor (medial or lateral) were treatments, with levels arranged in a complete (4x2) factorial design. Data were collected by placing the PPG sensor on the limb of each horse (n = 6), with placement location according to the treatment (limb type and location) combination, and taking pulse readings for 60 seconds. Manual heart rates were collected concurrently using a stethoscope. Data were analyzed by calculating root mean square errors (RMSE) for the PPG measurements with the manual heart rates as a gold standard. Variation in RMSE associated with limb and location of sensor were evaluated using a general linear model with fixed effects for limb and location and a random effect for horse. Our results indicated that the PPG sensor was ineffective at measuring horse heart rates, and that the device was insensitive to placement location and orientation. Future work should focus on developing alternative analytics to interpret the data from PPG sensors to better reflect horse heart rates.</p
