Correlating the properties of near-room-temperature first- and second-order magnetocaloric materials
Several magnetocaloric materials have been proposed since the discovery of the Giant Magnetocaloric Effect. Although some have great potential as magnetocaloric refrigerants or working materials in thermomagnetic motors/generators, only a few have been tested experimentally or had their properties incorporated into validated mathematical models. While experiments are limited by material costs and specialized equipment to determine magnetic field-dependent properties such as specific heat capacity and magnetization, the development of correlation methods must ensure data quality and resolution over a wide range of conditions to reduce interpolations errors. Aiming to keep the number of baseline experimental data points at a minimum, we propose a fitting procedure to correlate thermomagnetic quantities (i.e., isofield specific heat capacity, magnetization and isothermal entropy change) that is accurate at intermediate (i.e., not directly measured) temperatures and applied magnetic fields. The method has been applied to different first-order materials (La(Fe,Mn,Si)
H
and MnFeP
As
) and second-order materials (Gd and Gd
Y
) with a good reproducibility of the isofield specific heat capacity, entropyâtemperature diagram, adiabatic temperature change and magnetization behavior around room temperature at applied fields between 0 and 2 T
The CaT strength in Seyfert nuclei revisited: analyzing young stars and non-stellar light contributions to the spectra
In a former paper (Garcia-Rissmann et al. 2005; hereafter Paper I), we have
presented spectra of 64 active, 9 normal and 5 Starburst galaxies in the region
around the near-IR Calcium triplet absorption lines and the [SIII]9069 line. In
the present paper we analyze the CaT strength (WCaT), and kinematical products
derived in that study, namely stellar and ionized gas velocity dispersions. Our
main results may be summarized as follows: (1) Seyfert 2s show no sign of
dilution in WCaT with respect to the values spanned by normal galaxies, even
when optical absorption lines such as the CaII K band at 3933 A are much weaker
than in old, bulge-like stellar populations. (2) The location of Seyfert 2s in
the WCaT-WCaK plane is consistent with evolutionary synthesis models. The
implication is that the source responsible for the dilution of optical lines in
these AGN is a young stellar population, rather than an AGN featureless
continuum, confirming the conclusion of the pioneer study of Terlevich, Diaz &
Terlevich. (3) In Seyfert 1s, both W[SIII] and WCaT tend to be diluted due to
the presence of a non-stellar component, in agreement with the unification
paradigm. (4) A comparison of stellar and gas velocity dispersions confirms the
existence of a correlation between the typical velocities of stars and clouds
of the Narrow Line Region. The strength and scatter around this correlation are

Anisotropy and chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays using arrival directions measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory
The Pierre Auger Collaboration has reported evidence for anisotropy in the
distribution of arrival directions of the cosmic rays with energies
eV. These show a correlation with the distribution
of nearby extragalactic objects, including an apparent excess around the
direction of Centaurus A. If the particles responsible for these excesses at
are heavy nuclei with charge , the proton component of the
sources should lead to excesses in the same regions at energies . We here
report the lack of anisotropies in these directions at energies above
(for illustrative values of ). If the anisotropies
above are due to nuclei with charge , and under reasonable
assumptions about the acceleration process, these observations imply stringent
constraints on the allowed proton fraction at the lower energies
Gemini/GMOS IFU stellar kinematics of the nuclear region of six nearby active galaxies
We present two-dimensional (2D) mapping of the stellar velocity field within
the inner 5 arcsec of six nearby active galaxies, using spectra obtained with
the Integral Field Unit of the GMOS instrument at the Gemini North telescope.
The spatial resolution range from 20 to about 180 pc, and the observed field of
view covers a few hundred parsecs around the nuclei. The Calcium II triplet
absorption features at ~ 8500 A were used to measure the stellar radial
velocities and velocity dispersions (sigma). A simple kinematical model
assuming a purely rotating system with circular orbits in a plane was fitted to
the radial velocity data. The turnover of the rotation curve is at only ~ 50 pc
for NGC 4051 and between 200 and 700 pc for the other 5 galaxies. The sigma
maps show the largest values at the centre. In the cases of NGC 2273 and NGC
3227, there is a decrease to sigma ~ 70-80 km/s at ~ 200-300 pc from the
nucleus, delineating partial rings of low sigma values. A similar broken ring
seems to be present at ~ 400 pc from the nucleus also in NGC 4593. We interpret
these low sigma rings as traces of recently formed stars that partially keep
the cold kinematics of the original gas from which they have formed.
The main novelty of the present work is the unprecedented spatial resolution
reached by a 2D study of stellar kinematics of Seyfert galaxies using an IFU.
The few similar IFU studies available in the literature for Seyfert galaxies
have a much poorer spatial resolution and/or are restricted to the study of
emission line kinematics.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figure
The global abundance of tree palms
Aim Palms are an iconic, diverse and often abundant component of tropical ecosystems that provide many ecosystem services. Being monocots, tree palms are evolutionarily, morphologically and physiologically distinct from other trees, and these differences have important consequences for ecosystem services (e.g., carbon sequestration and storage) and in terms of responses to climate change. We quantified global patterns of tree palm relative abundance to help improve understanding of tropical forests and reduce uncertainty about these ecosystems under climate change. Location Tropical and subtropical moist forests. Time period Current. Major taxa studied Palms (Arecaceae). Methods We assembled a pantropical dataset of 2,548 forest plots (covering 1,191 ha) and quantified tree palm (i.e., âĽ10 cm diameter at breast height) abundance relative to coâoccurring nonâpalm trees. We compared the relative abundance of tree palms across biogeographical realms and tested for associations with palaeoclimate stability, current climate, edaphic conditions and metrics of forest structure. Results On average, the relative abundance of tree palms was more than five times larger between Neotropical locations and other biogeographical realms. Tree palms were absent in most locations outside the Neotropics but present in >80% of Neotropical locations. The relative abundance of tree palms was more strongly associated with local conditions (e.g., higher mean annual precipitation, lower soil fertility, shallower water table and lower plot mean wood density) than metrics of longâterm climate stability. Lifeâform diversity also influenced the patterns; palm assemblages outside the Neotropics comprise many nonâtree (e.g., climbing) palms. Finally, we show that tree palms can influence estimates of aboveâground biomass, but the magnitude and direction of the effect require additional work. Conclusions Tree palms are not only quintessentially tropical, but they are also overwhelmingly Neotropical. Future work to understand the contributions of tree palms to biomass estimates and carbon cycling will be particularly crucial in Neotropical forests
The effects of long-term total parenteral nutrition on gut mucosal immunity in children with short bowel syndrome: a systematic review
BACKGROUND: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is defined as the malabsorptive state that often follows massive resection of the small intestine. Most cases originate in the newborn period and result from congenital anomalies. It is associated with a high morbidity, is potentially lethal and often requires months, sometimes years, in the hospital and home on total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Long-term survival without parenteral nutrition depends upon establishing enteral nutrition and the process of intestinal adaptation through which the remaining small bowel gradually increases its absorptive capacity. The purpose of this article is to perform a descriptive systematic review of the published articles on the effects of TPN on the intestinal immune system investigating whether long-term TPN induces bacterial translocation, decreases secretory immunoglobulin A (S-IgA), impairs intestinal immunity, and changes mucosal architecture in children with SBS. METHODS: The databases of OVID, such as MEDLINE and CINAHL, Cochran Library, and Evidence-Based Medicine were searched for articles published from 1990 to 2001. Search terms were total parenteral nutrition, children, bacterial translocation, small bowel syndrome, short gut syndrome, intestinal immunity, gut permeability, sepsis, hyperglycemia, immunonutrition, glutamine, enteral tube feeding, and systematic reviews. The goal was to include all clinical studies conducted in children directly addressing the effects of TPN on gut immunity. RESULTS: A total of 13 studies were identified. These 13 studies included a total of 414 infants and children between the ages approximately 4 months to 17 years old, and 16 healthy adults as controls; and they varied in design and were conducted in several disciplines. The results were integrated into common themes. Five themes were identified: 1) sepsis, 2) impaired immune functions: In vitro studies, 3) mortality, 4) villous atrophy, 5) duration of dependency on TPN after bowel resection. CONCLUSION: Based on this exhaustive literature review, there is no direct evidence suggesting that TPN promotes bacterial overgrowth, impairs neutrophil functions, inhibits blood's bactericidal effect, causes villous atrophy, or causes to death in human model. The hypothesis relating negative effects of TPN on gut immunity remains attractive, but unproven. Enteral nutrition is cheaper, but no safer than TPN. Based on the current evidence, TPN seems to be safe and a life saving solution
Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.
BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF. AI is a viable alternative to high throughput screening: a 318-target study
: High throughput screening (HTS) is routinely used to identify bioactive small molecules. This requires physical compounds, which limits coverage of accessible chemical space. Computational approaches combined with vast on-demand chemical libraries can access far greater chemical space, provided that the predictive accuracy is sufficient to identify useful molecules. Through the largest and most diverse virtual HTS campaign reported to date, comprising 318 individual projects, we demonstrate that our AtomNetÂŽ convolutional neural network successfully finds novel hits across every major therapeutic area and protein class. We address historical limitations of computational screening by demonstrating success for target proteins without known binders, high-quality X-ray crystal structures, or manual cherry-picking of compounds. We show that the molecules selected by the AtomNetÂŽ model are novel drug-like scaffolds rather than minor modifications to known bioactive compounds. Our empirical results suggest that computational methods can substantially replace HTS as the first step of small-molecule drug discovery

Colorectal Cancer Stage at Diagnosis Before vs During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Italy
IMPORTANCE Delays in screening programs and the reluctance of patients to seek medical
attention because of the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 could be associated with the risk of more advanced
colorectal cancers at diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic was associated with more advanced
oncologic stage and change in clinical presentation for patients with colorectal cancer.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This retrospective, multicenter cohort study included all
17 938 adult patients who underwent surgery for colorectal cancer from March 1, 2020, to December
31, 2021 (pandemic period), and from January 1, 2018, to February 29, 2020 (prepandemic period),
in 81 participating centers in Italy, including tertiary centers and community hospitals. Follow-up was
30 days from surgery.
EXPOSURES Any type of surgical procedure for colorectal cancer, including explorative surgery,
palliative procedures, and atypical or segmental resections.
MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome was advanced stage of colorectal cancer
at diagnosis. Secondary outcomes were distant metastasis, T4 stage, aggressive biology (defined as
cancer with at least 1 of the following characteristics: signet ring cells, mucinous tumor, budding,
lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, and lymphangitis), stenotic lesion, emergency surgery,
and palliative surgery. The independent association between the pandemic period and the outcomes
was assessed using multivariate random-effects logistic regression, with hospital as the cluster
variable.
RESULTS A total of 17 938 patients (10 007 men [55.8%]; mean [SD] age, 70.6 [12.2] years)
underwent surgery for colorectal cancer: 7796 (43.5%) during the pandemic period and 10 142
(56.5%) during the prepandemic period. Logistic regression indicated that the pandemic period was
significantly associated with an increased rate of advanced-stage colorectal cancer (odds ratio [OR],
1.07; 95%CI, 1.01-1.13; P = .03), aggressive biology (OR, 1.32; 95%CI, 1.15-1.53; P < .001), and stenotic
lesions (OR, 1.15; 95%CI, 1.01-1.31; P = .03).
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE This cohort study suggests a significant association between the
SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the risk of a more advanced oncologic stage at diagnosis among patients
undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer and might indicate a potential reduction of survival for
these patients
