Digital twin technology has been regarded as a beneficial approach in supply chain development. Different from traditional digital twin (temporal dynamic), supply chain digital twin is a spatio-temporal dynamic system. This paper explains what is 'twined' in supply chain digital twin and how to 'twin' them to handle the spatio-temporal dynamic issue. A supply chain digital twin framework is developed based on the theories of system of systems and supply chain operations reference model. This framework is universal and can be applied in various types of supply chain systems. We firstly decompose the supply chain system into unified standard blocks preparing for the adoption of digital twin. Next, the idea of supply chain operations reference model is adopted to digitise basic supply chain activities within each block and explain how to use existing information system. Then, individual sub-digital twin is established for each member in supply chain system. After that, we apply the concept of system of systems to integrate and coordinate sub-digital twin into supply chain digital twin from the views of supply chain business integration and information system integration. At last, one simple supply chain system is applied to illustrate the application of the proposed model

Sustainable supply chain management towards disruption and organizational ambidexterity:A data driven analysis

    Get PDF
Balancing sustainability and disruption of supply chains requires organizational ambidexterity. Sustainable supply chains prioritize efficiency and economies of scale and may not have sufficient redundancy to withstand disruptive events. There is a developing body of literature that attempts to reconcile these two aspects. This study gives a data-driven literature review of sustainable supply chain management trends toward ambidexterity and disruption. The critical review reveals temporal trends and geographic distribution of literature. A hybrid of data-driven analysis approach based on content and bibliometric analyses, fuzzy Delphi method, entropy weight method, and fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory is used on 273 keywords and 22 indicators obtained based on the expertsā€™ evaluation. The most important indicators are identified as supply chain agility, supply chain coordination, supply chain finance, supply chain flexibility, supply chain resilience, and sustainability. The regions show different tendencies compared with others. Asia and Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa are the regions needs improvement, while Europe and North America show distinct apprehensions on supply chain network design. The main contribution of this review is the identification of the knowledge frontier, which then leads to a discussion of prospects for future studies and practical industry implementation

Net zero supply chain performance and industry 4.0 technologies: past review and present introspective analysis for future research directions

Interest in applying Industry 4.0 technologies in supply chain operations has increased significantly due to the urgent need to combat climate change and achieve net-zero emissions. This study aims to thoroughly comprehend how Industry 4.0 technologies affect the efficiency of net-zero supply chains. To do so, the study systematically reviews the existing research using 68 academic papers that are thematically analysed and classified by potentials associated with Industry 4.0 in the context of net zero supply chain performance. The findings of this systematic literature review highlight the multifaceted role of Industry 4.0 technologies in achieving net-zero supply chain performance. However, the study also identifies challenges related to policy, technology, economy, and markets to harness these technologies effectively. A conceptual framework is proposed to help organizations strategically leverage Industry 4.0 technologies for sustainable supply chain performance. By identifying knowledge gaps, the review provides a roadmap for future research to explore the complex dynamics at the intersection of Industry 4.0 and sustainability. Practically, the study offers valuable insights for supply chain managers and policymakers on the opportunities and challenges associated with adopting Industry 4.0 technologies for sustainable practices. With the goal of achieving net-zero supply chain performance, this paper emphasizes the importance of a holistic, integrated approach to technology adoption and sustainability strategies

A proposed framework for supply chain analytics using customer data

Thesis (PhD (Business Management))--University of Pretoria, 2022.The COVID-19 pandemic and recent geopolitical events have called for a need to re-evaluate methodologies for Supply Chain Risk management. Significant investment in supply chain technology has resulted in data being generated throughout the value chain. Customer data, specifically, is of interest in order to establish customer-centricity and an enhanced customer journey. However, the transformation of this data to insight is not obvious for some organisations. Forecasting models are typically used to inform decision-making, mitigate risks and enlighten policymakers. This thesis aims to address this challenge by proposing a set of capabilities that will enhance the integration of the supply chain network to its customer data. Given this context, two methodologies were used to address the research problem; (i) multinational petrochemicals company was considered for our case study and a web-based survey was distributed among key stakeholders at their head offices in South Africa. A structured equation model (SEM) was constructed to empirically test the proposed relationships among the constructs, specifically: People, Process and Technology capabilities; (ii) The macro-economic factors that drive customer demand also considered. Increasing crude oil prices have increased logistics costs and have incited the deglobalization of supply chain operations. A novel petroleum forecasting model is also proposed, particularly focusing on the forecasting on South Africaā€™s petrol and diesel consumptions. The model uses indices for Brent crude oil price (ZAR), Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Rand to Dollar exchange rate, Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) and Business Confidence Index (BCI) data as input data. Overall, this study suggests that in order to effectively serve their customers, organisations need to establish a culture of customer centricity that is underpinned by appropriate supply chain analytics techniques. The predictive model further highlights the need to establish the relationship between the organisationā€™s supply chain and micro and macro-economic drivers.Business ManagementPhD (Business Management)Unrestricte
