Study of pyridine-mediated electrochemical reduction of CO2 to methanol at high CO2 pressure

KGaA, Weinheim The recently proposed highly efficient route of pyridine-catalyzed CO 2 reduction to methanol was explored on platinum electrodes at high CO 2 pressure. At 55 bar (5.5 MPa) of CO 2 , the bulk electrolysis in both potentiostatic and galvanostatic regimes resulted in methanol production with Faradaic yields of up to 10 % for the first 5–10 C cm −2 of charge passed. For longer electrolysis, the methanol concentration failed to increase proportionally and was limited to sub-ppm levels irrespective of biasing conditions and pyridine concentration. This limitation cannot be removed by electrode reactivation and/or pre-electrolysis and appears to be an inherent feature of the reduction process. In agreement with bulk electrolysis findings, the CV analysis supported by simulation indicated that hydrogen evolution is still the dominant electrode reaction in pyridine-containing electrolyte solution, even with an excess CO 2 concentration in the solution. No prominent contribution from either a direct or coupled CO 2 reduction was found. The results obtained suggest that the reduction of CO 2 to methanol is a transient process that is largely decoupled from the electrode charge transfer
The Kepler-10 planetary system revisited by HARPS-N: A hot rocky world and a solid Neptune-mass planet
Kepler-10b was the first rocky planet detected by the Kepler satellite and
con- firmed with radial velocity follow-up observations from Keck-HIRES. The
mass of the planet was measured with a precision of around 30%, which was
insufficient to constrain models of its internal structure and composition in
detail. In addition to Kepler-10b, a second planet transiting the same star
with a period of 45 days was sta- tistically validated, but the radial
velocities were only good enough to set an upper limit of 20 Mearth for the
mass of Kepler-10c. To improve the precision on the mass for planet b, the
HARPS-N Collaboration decided to observe Kepler-10 intensively with the HARPS-N
spectrograph on the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo on La Palma. In to- tal, 148
high-quality radial-velocity measurements were obtained over two observing
seasons. These new data allow us to improve the precision of the mass
determina- tion for Kepler-10b to 15%. With a mass of 3.33 +/- 0.49 Mearth and
an updated radius of 1.47 +0.03 -0.02 Rearth, Kepler-10b has a density of 5.8
+/- 0.8 g cm-3, very close to the value -0.02 predicted by models with the same
internal structure and composition as the Earth. We were also able to determine
a mass for the 45-day period planet Kepler-10c, with an even better precision
of 11%. With a mass of 17.2 +/- 1.9 Mearth and radius of 2.35 +0.09 -0.04
Rearth, -0.04 Kepler-10c has a density of 7.1 +/- 1.0 g cm-3. Kepler-10c
appears to be the first strong evidence of a class of more massive solid

Mechanical chest compression devices at in-hospital cardiac arrest: A systematic review and meta-analysis
AIM:
To summarise the evidence in relation to the routine use of mechanical chest compression devices during resuscitation from in-hospital cardiac arrest.
METHODS:
We conducted a systematic review of studies which compared the effect of the use of a mechanical chest compression device with manual chest compressions in adults that sustained an in-hospital cardiac arrest. Critical outcomes were survival with good neurological outcome, survival at hospital discharge or 30-days, and short-term survival (ROSC/1-h survival). Important outcomes included physiological outcomes. We synthesised results in a random-effects meta-analysis or narrative synthesis, as appropriate. Evidence quality in relation to each outcome was assessed using the GRADE system.
DATA SOURCES:
Studies were identified using electronic databases searches (Cochrane Central, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL), forward and backward citation searching, and review of reference lists of manufacturer documentation.
RESULTS:
Eight papers, containing nine studies [689 participants], were included. Three studies were randomised controlled trials. Meta-analyses showed an association between use of mechanical chest compression device and improved hospital or 30-day survival (odds ratio 2.34, 95% CI 1.42-3.85) and short-term survival (odds ratio 2.14, 95% CI 1.11-4.13). There was also evidence of improvements in physiological outcomes. Overall evidence quality in relation to all outcomes was very low.
CONCLUSIONS:
Mechanical chest compression devices may improve patient outcome, when used at in-hospital cardiac arrest. However, the quality of current evidence is very low. There is a need for randomised trials to evaluate the effect of mechanical chest compression devices on survival for in-hospital cardiac arrest
A multi-targeted approach to suppress tumor-promoting inflammation
Cancers harbor significant genetic heterogeneity and patterns of relapse following many therapies are due to evolved resistance to treatment. While efforts have been made to combine targeted therapies, significant levels of toxicity have stymied efforts to effectively treat cancer with multi-drug combinations using currently approved therapeutics. We discuss the relationship between tumor-promoting inflammation and cancer as part of a larger effort to develop a broad-spectrum therapeutic approach aimed at a wide range of targets to address this heterogeneity. Specifically, macrophage migration inhibitory factor, cyclooxygenase-2, transcription factor nuclear factor-κB, tumor necrosis factor alpha, inducible nitric oxide synthase, protein kinase B, and CXC chemokines are reviewed as important antiinflammatory targets while curcumin, resveratrol, epigallocatechin gallate, genistein, lycopene, and anthocyanins are reviewed as low-cost, low toxicity means by which these targets might all be reached simultaneously. Future translational work will need to assess the resulting synergies of rationally designed antiinflammatory mixtures (employing low-toxicity constituents), and then combine this with similar approaches targeting the most important pathways across the range of cancer hallmark phenotypes
