    KINETIC PLASMA TURBULENCE IN THE FAST SOLAR WIND MEASURED BY CLUSTER

    The k-filtering technique and wave polarization analysis are applied to Cluster magnetic field data to study plasma turbulence at the scale of the ion gyroradius in the fast solar wind. Waves are found propagating in directions nearly perpendicular to the background magnetic field at such scales. The frequencies of these waves in the solar wind frame are much smaller than the proton gyro-frequency. After the wave vector k{\bf k} is determined at each spacecraft frequency fscf_{sc}, wave polarization property is analyzed in the plane perpendicular to k{\bf k}. Magnetic fluctuations have δB>δB\delta B_\perp>\delta B_\parallel (here the \parallel and \perp refer to the background magnetic field B0{\bf B}_0). The wave magnetic field has right-handed polarization at propagation angles θkB<90\theta_{\bf kB}<90^\circ and >90>90^\circ. The magnetic field in the plane perpendicular to B0{\bf B}_0 however has no clear sense of a dominant polarization but local rotations. We discuss the merits and limitations of linear kinetic Aflv\'en waves (KAWs) and coherent Alfv\'en vortices in the interpretation of the data. We suggest that the fast solar wind turbulence may be populated with KAWs, small scale current sheets and Alfv\'en vortices at ion kinetic scales.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, Accepted by Ap

    A microgravity isolation mount

    The design and preliminary testing of a system for isolating microgravity sensitive payloads from spacecraft vibrational and impulsive disturbances is discussed. The Microgravity Isolation Mount (MGIM) concept consists of a platform which floats almost freely within a limited volume inside the spacecraft, but which is constrained to follow the spacecraft in the long term by means of very weak springs. The springs are realized magnetically and form part of a six degree of freedom active magnetic suspension system. The latter operates without any physical contact between the spacecraft and the platform itself. Power and data transfer is also performed by contactless means. Specifications are given for the expected level of input disturbances and the tolerable level of platform acceleration. The structural configuration of the mount is discussed and the design of the principal elements, i.e., actuators, sensors, control loops and power/data transfer devices are described. Finally, the construction of a hardware model that is being used to verify the predicted performance of the MGIM is described

    Variability of the Magnetic Field Power Spectrum in the Solar Wind at Electron Scales

    At electron scales, the power spectrum of solar-wind magnetic fluctuations can be highly variable and the dissipation mechanisms of the magnetic energy into the various particle species is under debate. In this paper, we investigate data from the Cluster mission's STAFF Search Coil magnetometer when the level of turbulence is sufficiently high that the morphology of the power spectrum at electron scales can be investigated. The Cluster spacecraft sample a disturbed interval of plasma where two streams of solar wind interact. Meanwhile, several discontinuities (coherent structures) are seen in the large-scale magnetic field, while at small scales several intermittent bursts of wave activity (whistler waves) are present. Several different morphologies of the power spectrum can be identified: (1) two power laws separated by a break, (2) an exponential cutoff near the Taylor shifted electron scales, and (3) strong spectral knees at the Taylor shifted electron scales. These different morphologies are investigated by using wavelet coherence, showing that, in this interval, a clear break and strong spectral knees are features that are associated with sporadic quasi parallel propagating whistler waves, even for short times. On the other hand, when no signatures of whistler waves at similar to 0.1-0.2f(ce) are present, a clear break is difficult to find and the spectrum is often more characteristic of a power law with an exponential cutoff.Peer reviewe

    Higher-Order Statistics in Compressive Solar Wind Plasma Turbulence: High-Resolution Density Observations From the Magnetospheric MultiScale Mission

    Turbulent density fluctuations are investigated in the solar wind at sub-ion scales using calibrated spacecraft potential. The measurement technique using the spacecraft potential allows for a much higher time resolution and sensitivity when compared to direct measurements using plasma instruments. Using this novel method, density fluctuations can be measured with unprecedentedly high time resolutions for in situ measurements of solar wind plasma at 1 a.u. By investigating 1 h of high-time resolution data, the scale dependant kurtosis is calculated by varying the time lag τ to calculate increments between observations. The scale-dependent kurtosis is found to increase towards ion scales but then plateaus and remains fairly constant through the sub-ion range in a similar fashion to magnetic field measurements. The sub-ion range is also found to exhibit self-similar monofractal behavior contrasting sharply with the multi-fractal behavior at large scales. The scale-dependent kurtosis is also calculated using increments between two different spacecraft. When the time lags are converted using the ion bulk velocity to a comparable spatial lag, a discrepancy is observed between the two measurement techniques. Several different possibilities are discussed including a breakdown of Taylor’s hypothesis, high-frequency plasma waves, or intrinsic differences between sampling directions.</p

    Opportunities, challenges and implications of primary care micro-teams for patients and healthcare professionals: an international systematic review

    Background: There has been a recent trend, both in the UK and internationally, towards creating larger primary care practices with the assumption that interdisciplinary teams can increase patient accessibility and provide more cost-effective, efficient services. Micro-teams have been proposed to mitigate some of the potential challenges with practice expansion, including continuity of care. / Aim: Review the available literature to examine how micro-teams are described and the opportunities which primary care micro-teams can provide for practice staff and patients and limitations to their introduction and implementation. / Design and setting: International Systematic review of studies published in English. / Method: A Framework analysis was used to synthesise the literature. Databases and grey literature were searched. Studies were included if they provided evidence regarding the implementation of micro-teams in primary care. We worked with a PPI co-author and conducted stakeholder discussions to those with and without experience in micro-team implementation. / Results: The majority of the 24 included studies discussed empirical data from healthcare professionals, describing the implementation of micro-teams. Results include the characteristics of the literature; how micro-teams have been described; the range of ways micro-teams have been implemented; reported outcomes and experiences of patients and staff. / Conclusion: The organisation of primary care has the potential to impact the nature and quality of patient care, safety and outcomes. This review contributes to current debates surrounding care delivery and how this can impact the experiences and outcomes of patients and staff. The analysis identifies several key opportunities and challenges for future research, policy and practice
