Universal properties of shortest paths in isotropically correlated random potentials

We consider the optimal paths in a dd-dimensional lattice, where the bonds have isotropically correlated random weights. These paths can be interpreted as the ground state configuration of a simplified polymer model in a random potential. We study how the universal scaling exponents, the roughness and the energy fluctuation exponent, depend on the strength of the disorder correlations. Our numerical results using Dijkstra's algorithm to determine the optimal path in directed as well as undirected lattices indicate that the correlations become relevant if they decay with distance slower than 1/r in d=2 and 3. We show that the exponent relation 2nu-omega=1 holds at least in d=2 even in case of correlations. Both in two and three dimensions, overhangs turn out to be irrelevant even in the presence of strong disorder correlations.Comment: 8 pages LaTeX, eps figures included, typos added, references added, content change

    Pathway to Successful Young Adulthood

    Get PDF
The Pathway to Successful Young Adulthood assembles a wealth of findings from research, practice, theory, and policy about what it takes to improve the lives of children, youth and families, particularly those living in tough neighborhoods. By laying out a comprehensive, coherent array of actions, the Pathway informs efforts to improve community conditions within supportive policy and funding contexts. The Pathways framework does not promote a single formula or program. Rather, our emphasis is on acting strategically across disciplines, systems, and jurisdictions to increase the number of young people who make a successful transition to young adulthood. The Pathway provides a starting point to guide choices made by community coalitions, services providers, researchers, funders, and policymakers to achieve desired outcomes for young people and their families

    Distributed Virtual System (DIVIRS) Project

    Get PDF
As outlined in our continuation proposal 92-ISI-50R (revised) on contract NCC 2-539, we are (1) developing software, including a system manager and a job manager, that will manage available resources and that will enable programmers to program parallel applications in terms of a virtual configuration of processors, hiding the mapping to physical nodes; (2) developing communications routines that support the abstractions implemented in item one; (3) continuing the development of file and information systems based on the virtual system model; and (4) incorporating appropriate security measures to allow the mechanisms developed in items 1 through 3 to be used on an open network. The goal throughout our work is to provide a uniform model that can be applied to both parallel and distributed systems. We believe that multiprocessor systems should exist in the context of distributed systems, allowing them to be more easily shared by those that need them. Our work provides the mechanisms through which nodes on multiprocessors are allocated to jobs running within the distributed system and the mechanisms through which files needed by those jobs can be located and accessed

Unequal opportunities: companies and the State in contention over mining in Chile

    Democracia, Industria y Marcos Conceptuales

Using Role Method and Therapeutic Circus Arts with Adults to Create a Meaningful Performance

    Get PDF
This capstone thesis explores the ways in which dramatherapeutic techniques, specifically Role Method (RM), can be used in conjunction with the field of Therapeutic Circus Arts (TCA). The literature reviews the topics of the history of circus, social circus, the current research on Therapeutic Circus Arts, and drama therapy with a concentration on the core processes, role theory, and Role Method. A one-time community engagement workshop project was developed based on Role Method and Therapeutic Circus Arts to guide adults with circus experience to create a meaningful performance designed for self-discovery. Results of the workshop are presented through this writer’s experience, further exhibited by arts-based research centering on the themes of self-discovery, vulnerability, and active witnessing. This thesis offers a bridging of two emerging fields and alternative uses for the application of Role Method. Further study could benefit from extending the workshop into multiple sessions to promote role exploration and self-growth

Effect of Tunable Indexing on Term Distribution and Cluster-based Information Retrieval Performance

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of tunable indexing on the structure and information retrieval performance of a clustered document database. The generation of all cluster structures and calculation of term discrimination values is based upon the Cover Coefficient-Based Clustering Methodology. Information retrieval performance is measured in terms of precision, recall, and e-measure. The relationship between term generality and term discrimination value is quantified using the Pearson Rank Correlation Coefficient Test. The effect of tunable indexing on index term distribution and on the number of target clusters is examined
