    Since 14 November 2016, 38 cases of hepatitis A have been notified in Berlin; of these, 37 were male and 30 reported to have sex with men (MSM). Median age of MSM cases is 31 years (range: 24–52 years). Phylogenetic analysis revealed three distinct sequences, linking cases in Berlin to those in other German cities and to clusters recognised in other European countries in 2016

    At the Karlsruhe Institue of Technology (KIT), a 3D-Ultrasound Computer Tomography (3D-USCT) medical imaging system for early breast cancer detection is currently developed. With the next generation of 3D-USCT 2.5, the current region of interest (ROI) of 10 x 10 x 10 cm³ shall be increased to 20 x 20 x 20 cm³ to allow reliable imaging results also for bigger female breasts. Therefore, the opening angle (OA) of the future transducers should be increased to approx. 60 ° at 3 dB while other characteristics such as bandwidth (BW) and resonance frequency should be preserved or even improved. Based on Fraunhofer IKTS Piezofibre composites utilized for transducer production, an optimization is performed on piezoelectric sensor geometry and size, type and structure of matching and backing layer and interconnection technology of the several parts of the transduce

    Resurgence of an international hepatitis A outbreak linked to imported frozen strawberries, Germany, 2018 to 2020

    Following outbreaks linked to frozen strawberries in Sweden and Austria in 2018, 65 cases linked to the same hepatitis A virus strain were detected in Germany between October 2018 and January 2020, presenting in two waves. Two case-control studies and a comparison of cases' consumption frequencies with purchase data from a large consumer panel provided strong evidence for frozen strawberry cake as the main vehicle of transmission. Of 46 cases interviewed, 27 reported consuming frozen strawberry cake and 25 of these identified cake(s) from brand A spontaneously or in product picture-assisted recall. Trace back investigations revealed that the Polish producer involved in the previous outbreaks in Sweden and Austria had received frozen strawberries from Egypt via a wholesaler that also delivered frozen strawberries to manufacturer of brand A. Phylogenetic analyses linked the outbreak strain to similar strains formerly isolated from sewage, stool and strawberries in Egypt. Complete trace back and timely recall of products with strong evidence of contamination is important to control an outbreak and prevent later resurgence, particularly for food items with a long shelf life. Continued molecular surveillance of hepatitis A is needed to identify outbreaks and monitor the success of food safety interventions

    The BepiColombo Laser Altimeter (BELA) during Near-Earth Commissioning Phase (NECP)

    The ESA/JAXA joint mission BepiColombo to Mercury was launched successfully on October 20, 2018 (UTC) from Kourou, French Guiana. Currently BepiColombo is on its nominal 7-years cruise to the innermost planet. BepiColombo consists of two spacecraft, the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO), both targeted for different orbits around Mercury after arrival in December 2025. The BepiColombo Laser Altimeter (BELA) is one of ten payloads on the MPO. After launch the spacecraft and the instruments entered the Near-Earth Commissioning Phase (NECP), including a first switch-on of BELA on November24, 2018. Here we report on the status of the instrument based on the analysis of NECP data and on data from a second switch-on, planned for June 2019

    Die STIKO empfiehlt allen Personen im Alter von ≥60 Jahren im Herbst eine jährliche Impfung gegen die saisonale Influenza mit einem inaktivierten, quadrivalenten Influenza-Hochdosis-Impfstoff mit aktueller von der WHO empfohlener Antigenkombination. Solange Hochdosis-Impfstoffe für die Altersgruppe 60-64 Jahre nicht zugelassen sind, werden für die Influenza-Impfung von Personen in diesem Alter weiterhin inaktivierte, quadrivalente Influenza-Impfstoffe (unabhängig vom Impfstofftyp) empfohlen. Eine Empfehlung für die Anwendung eines Influenza-Hochdosis-Impfstoffs ist in gleichem Maße bei der Impfempfehlung für Reisende zu berücksichtigen. Die Veröffentlichung dieser Empfehlung zu diesem Zeitpunkt, ohne Berücksichtigung der aktuellen Verfügbarkeit von Influenza-Hochdosis-Impfstoffen, soll gewährleisten, dass der entsprechende Impfstoffbedarf bei der Planung, Produktion und Beschaffung von Influenza-Impfstoffen ab der Saison 2021/2022 berücksichtigt werden kann

    Space-qualified laser system for the BepiColombo Laser Altimeter

    The space-qualified design of a miniaturized laser for pulsed operation at a wavelength of 1064 nm and at repetition rates up to 10 Hz is presented. This laser consists of a pair of diode-laser pumped, actively q-switched Nd:YAG rod oscillators hermetically sealed and encapsulated in an environment of dry synthetic air. The system delivers at least 300 million laser pulses with 50 mJ energy and 5 ns pulse width (FWHM). It will be launched in 2017 aboard European Space Agency’s Mercury Planetary Orbiter as part of the BepiColombo Laser Altimeter, which, after a 6-years cruise, will start recording topographic data from orbital altitudes between 400 and 1500 km above Mercury’s surface

    The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) is a science mission led by the European Space Agency, being developed for launch in 2023. The Ganymede Laser Altimeter (GALA) is an instrument onboard JUICE, whose main scientific goals are to understand ice tectonics based on topographic data, the subsurface structure by measuring tidal response, and small-scale roughness and albedo of the surface. In addition, from the perspective of astrobiology, it is imperative to study the subsurface ocean scientifically. The development of GALA has proceeded through an international collaboration between Germany (the lead), Japan, Switzerland, and Spain. Within this framework, the Japanese team (GALA-J) is responsible for developing three receiver modules: the Backend Optics (BEO), the Focal Plane Assembly (FPA), and the Analog Electronics Module (AEM). Like the German team, GALA-J also developed software to simulate the performance of the entire GALA system (performance model). In July 2020, the Proto-Flight Models of BEO, FPA, and AEM were delivered from Japan to Germany.     Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe
