    An Ab Initio Description of the Mott Metal-Insulator Transition of M2_{2} Vanadium Dioxide

    Using an \textit{ab initio} approach based on the GW approximation which includes strong local \textbf{k}-space correlations, the Metal-Insulator Transition of M2_2 vanadium dioxide is broken down into its component parts and investigated. Similarly to the M1_{1} structure, the Peierls pairing of the M2_{2} structure results in bonding-antibonding splitting which stabilizes states in which the majority of the charge density resides on the Peierls chain. This is insufficient to drop all of the bonding states into the lower Hubbard band however. An antiferroelectric distortion on the neighboring vanadium chain is required to reduce the repulsion felt by the Peierls bonding states by increasing the distances between the vanadium and apical oxygen atoms, lowering the potential overlap thus reducing the charge density accumulation and thereby the electronic repulsion. The antibonding states are simultaneously pushed into the upper Hubbard band. The data indicate that sufficiently modified GW calculations are able to describe the interplay of the atomic and electronic structures occurring in Mott metal-insulator transitions.Comment: 10 Pages, 7 Figure

    A proton nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabonomics study of metabolic profiling in immunoglobulin a nephropathy

    OBJECTIVES: Immunoglobulin A nephropathy is the most common cause of chronic renal failure among primary glomerulonephritis patients. The ability to diagnose immunoglobulin A nephropathy remains poor. However, renal biopsy is an inconvenient, invasive, and painful examination, and no reliable biomarkers have been developed for use in routine patient evaluations. The aims of the present study were to identify immunoglobulin A nephropathy patients, to identify useful biomarkers of immunoglobulin A nephropathy and to establish a human immunoglobulin A nephropathy metabolic profile. METHODS: Serum samples were collected from immunoglobulin A nephropathy patients who were not using immunosuppressants. A pilot study was undertaken to determine disease-specific metabolite biomarker profiles in three groups: healthy controls (N = 23), low-risk patients in whom immunoglobulin A nephropathy was confirmed as grades I-II by renal biopsy (N = 23), and high-risk patients with nephropathies of grades IV-V (N = 12). Serum samples were analyzed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and by applying multivariate pattern recognition analysis for disease classification. RESULTS: Compared with the healthy controls, both the low-risk and high-risk patients had higher levels of phenylalanine, myo-Inositol, lactate, L6 lipids ( = CH-CH2-CH = O), L5 lipids (-CH2-C = O), and L3 lipids (-CH2-CH2-C = O) as well as lower levels of β -glucose, α-glucose, valine, tyrosine, phosphocholine, lysine, isoleucine, glycerolphosphocholine, glycine, glutamine, glutamate, alanine, acetate, 3-hydroxybutyrate, and 1-methylhistidine. CONCLUSIONS: These metabolites investigated in this study may serve as potential biomarkers of immunoglobulin A nephropathy. Point scoring of pattern recognition analysis was able to distinguish immunoglobulin A nephropathy patients from healthy controls. However, there were no obvious differences between the low-risk and high-risk groups in our research. These results offer new, sensitive and specific, noninvasive approaches that may be of great benefit to immunoglobulin A nephropathy patients by enabling earlier diagnosis

    PPR Protein BFA2 Is Essential for the Accumulation of the atpH/F Transcript in Chloroplasts

    As a fascinating and complicated nanomotor, chloroplast ATP synthase comprises nine subunits encoded by both the nuclear and plastid genomes. Because of its uneven subunit stoichiometry, biogenesis of ATP synthase and expression of plastid-encoded ATP synthase genes requires assistance by nucleus-encoded factors involved in transcriptional, post-transcriptional, and translational steps. In this study, we report a P-class pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) protein BFA2 (Biogenesis Factor required for ATP synthase 2) that is essential for accumulation of the dicistronic atpH/F transcript in Arabidopsis chloroplasts. A loss-of-function mutation in BFA2 results in a specific reduction of more than 3/4 of chloroplast ATP synthase, which is likely due to the absence of dicistronic atpH/F transcript. BFA2 protein contains 22 putative PPR motifs and exclusively localizes in the chloroplast. Bioinformatics and Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assays (EMSA) analysis showed that BFA2 binds to the consensus sequence of the atpF-atpA intergenic region in a sequence-specific manner. However, translation initiation of the atpA was not affected in the bfa2 mutant. Thus, we propose that the chloroplast PPR protein BFA2 mainly acts as barrier to prevent the atpH/F transcript degradation by exoribonucleases by binding to the consensus sequence of the atpF-atpA intergenic region

    Elevated limb-bud and heart development (LBH) expression indicates poor prognosis and promotes gastric cancer cell proliferation and invasion via upregulating Integrin/FAK/Akt pathway

    The limb-bud and heart development (LBH) gene is a highly conserved, tissue-specific transcription cofactor in vertebrates that regulates multiple key genes in embryonic development. The role of LBH in various cancer types is still controversial, and its specific role and molecular mechanism in the oncogenesis of gastric cancer (GC) remains largely unexplored. In the present study, the prognostic significance and clinicopathological characteristics of LBH in GC was determined. The LBH mRNA expression was first investigated in four independent public datasets (TCGA-STAD, GSE15459, GSE29272, and GSE62254) and then validated with our samples at the protein level. LBH was overexpressed at both the mRNA and protein levels in cancer compared with normal tissues. High LBH expression was correlated with advanced T, N, and M stages. Kaplan–Meier analysis and log-rank test indicated that higher LBH expression was statistically correlated with shorter overall survival (OS) in the public datasets and our study samples. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that LBH was an independent prognostic biomarker for survival in TCGA-STAD, GSE15459, GSE62254 cohorts, and our GC patients. In vitro experiments showed that knockdown of LBH can significantly inhibit the proliferation and invasion of HGC-27 cells, while overexpression of LBH can significantly enhance the proliferation and invasion of BGC-823 cells. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA), Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomics (KEGG) indicated that high LBH expression is associated with the PI3K-Akt pathway, focal adhesion, and extracellular matrix (ECM)-receptor interaction. Western blot analysis showed that knockdown of LBH significantly inhibited the expression of integrin α5, integrin β1, p-FAK, and p-Akt. Therefore, results from the present study indicate that LBH is a potential independent prognostic biomarker and promotes proliferation and invasion of GC cells by activating the integrin/FAK/Akt pathway

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research.Peer reviewe

    Worldwide trends in underweight and obesity from 1990 to 2022: a pooled analysis of 3663 population-representative studies with 222 million children, adolescents, and adults

    Background Underweight and obesity are associated with adverse health outcomes throughout the life course. We estimated the individual and combined prevalence of underweight or thinness and obesity, and their changes, from 1990 to 2022 for adults and school-aged children and adolescents in 200 countries and territories. Methods We used data from 3663 population-based studies with 222 million participants that measured height and weight in representative samples of the general population. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate trends in the prevalence of different BMI categories, separately for adults (age ≥20 years) and school-aged children and adolescents (age 5–19 years), from 1990 to 2022 for 200 countries and territories. For adults, we report the individual and combined prevalence of underweight (BMI <18·5 kg/m2) and obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2). For schoolaged children and adolescents, we report thinness (BMI <2 SD below the median of the WHO growth reference) and obesity (BMI >2 SD above the median). Findings From 1990 to 2022, the combined prevalence of underweight and obesity in adults decreased in 11 countries (6%) for women and 17 (9%) for men with a posterior probability of at least 0·80 that the observed changes were true decreases. The combined prevalence increased in 162 countries (81%) for women and 140 countries (70%) for men with a posterior probability of at least 0·80. In 2022, the combined prevalence of underweight and obesity was highest in island nations in the Caribbean and Polynesia and Micronesia, and countries in the Middle East and north Africa. Obesity prevalence was higher than underweight with posterior probability of at least 0·80 in 177 countries (89%) for women and 145 (73%) for men in 2022, whereas the converse was true in 16 countries (8%) for women, and 39 (20%) for men. From 1990 to 2022, the combined prevalence of thinness and obesity decreased among girls in five countries (3%) and among boys in 15 countries (8%) with a posterior probability of at least 0·80, and increased among girls in 140 countries (70%) and boys in 137 countries (69%) with a posterior probability of at least 0·80. The countries with highest combined prevalence of thinness and obesity in school-aged children and adolescents in 2022 were in Polynesia and Micronesia and the Caribbean for both sexes, and Chile and Qatar for boys. Combined prevalence was also high in some countries in south Asia, such as India and Pakistan, where thinness remained prevalent despite having declined. In 2022, obesity in school-aged children and adolescents was more prevalent than thinness with a posterior probability of at least 0·80 among girls in 133 countries (67%) and boys in 125 countries (63%), whereas the converse was true in 35 countries (18%) and 42 countries (21%), respectively. In almost all countries for both adults and school-aged children and adolescents, the increases in double burden were driven by increases in obesity, and decreases in double burden by declining underweight or thinness. Interpretation The combined burden of underweight and obesity has increased in most countries, driven by an increase in obesity, while underweight and thinness remain prevalent in south Asia and parts of Africa. A healthy nutrition transition that enhances access to nutritious foods is needed to address the remaining burden of underweight while curbing and reversing the increase in obesit

    Robotics education is important in training children's thinking, practical, and innovation abilities. It is significant to stimulate children's interest in learning and improve their learning quality. The existing research has not paid attention to the application of robotics education in children. It is necessary to stimulate children's interest in learning. This paper will take senior kindergarten students as the research object. It analyzes the application of the Vector Space Model (VSM) in robotics course development. The research and development of children's robotics courses incorporating Artificial Intelligence technology are based on the survey results of robotics courses offered by 38 kindergartens in Baoji City. An automatic document classification system based on VSM is designed to assist in compiling robotics teaching textbooks. Finally, the system performance is tested. The results show that about 24% of kindergartens offer robotics courses, and 76% do not. Besides, 70.14% of teachers support the establishment of children's robotics courses. The classification effect of the VSM system is better than that of Chinese documents. This system performs better than the automatic document classification system based on Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency. Its classification accuracy, recall, and F1 value are all above 85%. The development of the robotics course provides a better teaching environment for teaching young children about AI and robots. The robotics education discussed in this paper is a hot spot in the current curriculum reform and is of great significance to the development and innovation in early childhood education

    Study on water retention capacities of six moss species

    The saturated water absorption and retention rates of six mosses,namely Brachythecium albicans,Thuidium cymbifolium,Racomitrium japonicum,Taxiphyllum taxirameum,Entodon cladorrhizans and Hypnum plumaeforme,were determined and compared with those of Eremochloa ophiuroides and Sedum lineare.An integrated index to evaluate water regulation capacity was proposed.According to the integrated index concerning water regulation capacity from high to low,six moss species were ranked as H.plumaeforme (0.8215),T.cymbifolium (0.6727),B.albicans (0.5468),R.japonicum (0.5321),T.taxirameum (0.5285) and E.cladorrhizans (0.4374).The water regulation capacity of the six moss species were all higher than those of S.lineare (0.2843) and E.ophiuroides (0.2126)
